Romance and Flowers
in Long Association
In the development of gift-making
in courtship a certain amount of ro
mance centers around the ilower. The
flower is the gift of lovers, and in
early Greek times a flower was worn
as a sign of the engagement, the full
blossoming llower suggesting love
awakened. The Polynesian men, as
well as the women, wear llowers be
hind their ears when they are in love.
The survival of another picturesque
medieval custom centering around the
llower is found in the bride's llower
girls of today. In olden times these
little girls, usually sisters, dressed ex
actly alike, carried garlands of wheat
before the bride in the marriage pro
cession as a symbol of fruitful ness
and plenty. The very old and univer
sally observed custom of throwing rice
utter the departing bride and bride
groom as a symbol of a fruitful union
had Its origin with the ancient Per
sians. Itlce lias always plny.ed nn Im
portant part In the marriage ceremony
of these people, while the wlieut show
er, expressing tho same sentiment,
whs common among the early Anglo
Saxons, und certain other people em
ployed corn. Another Interesting tra
dition regarding the rice fchowcr is
that rice was thrown after the bride
and bridegroom for the purpose of
giving food to the evil spirits that
were believed to accompany newly
married people, and that It was to
appease these spirits that rice throw
ing originated.
Stained Glass Makes
Appeal to Converts
In the center of a Christian settle
ment In the Jungle at Medal:, Hydera
bad, India, stands a Christian church
of the proportions of a cathedral.
This Is tlie central pluce of worship
for the great community of Indian
Christians, numbering over 50,0lX),
who have gathered around Itev. C. V.
Posnett, a Weslcyan missionary, as a
result of his 30 years' work in this
native state. The church was opened
a year ugo, but there seemed some
thing lacking in Its beautiful interior,
despite the murbles and many tinted
tiles. There was no stained glass In
the windows. Six thousand Indian
Christians have given the money for
a window, designed by Frank 0. Sails
bury, a well-known British artist. The
subject Is the Ascension, and Mr.
Salisbury says of the window: "The
desire of the donors was that their
church should be us beautiful as any
Mohammedan mosque or Hindu tem
ple, and I trust that my work will
help them to realize their Ideal of
beauty as an aid to worship."
