OTHER THAN WAR HEROES
. The Oregon Tuberculosis Associa
tion acquaints the state press with
tho frt that September 13th marked
the 76th anniversary of the birth of
Major Walter Reed, discoverer of
the cause of yellow fever and first
conqueror of the Aedes Aegypti mos
quito, carrier of the yellow fever
germ.
"While American school children
are very familiar with the war heroes
of their country's history, states the
association, little or nothing is taught
to them about American Health
Heroes who have offered their lives
in a war against disease germs. It
is only within the past year that the
heroic deeds of these American Pa
triots have been recorded in books
that are available for wide distribu
tion in the public schools. This work
has been done by the Metropolitan
Life Insurance company in a series of
24-page booklets entitled Health
Heroes. Thus far, four of these book
lets have been published and can be
had free of charge from the Portland
branch of the Metropolitan and also
from the office of the Oregon Tuber
culosis Association, 310 Fitzpatrick
block.
"The four that have appeared deal
with the lives and accomplishments
of Edward Jenner, originator of
smallpox vaccine, Edward Livingston
Trudeau, pioneer of the tuberculosis
sanatorium movement, Walter Reed,
mentioned above, and Louis Pasteur,
French bacteriologist. The first three
of these are native Americans, and
Pasteur was closely associated with
a number of American scientists of
the time.
"Walter Reed's work in proving
that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito was
the only carrier of yellow fever pav
ed the way for the work of General
W. C. Gorgas who freed the Canal
Zone from this pest and made pos
sible the building of the Canal."

Just why certain newspapers con
tinue to warp the Columbia Basin
project into power development of
the Columbia river, when not a drop
of the water of that river will ba
used should the proposed project
materialize, is past grasping,. The
Pendleton East Oreconian has
been practically alone in its fight to
secure the Umatilla Rapids project
the real power plant of the Colum
bia. And it has been giving the
true facts concerning both projects.
But for some reason or other the
harder the East Oregonian thrusts
home the truth, the more active be
come the basin propagandists.

The political pot is merrily Bimmer
ine down in Multnomah county,
where a congressional contest is on.
The democrats seem to be furnishing
most of the steam, but republicans
are carrying on, also. They propose
to interject Sandblast, a wet candid
ate into the race. To get back at
Watkins and West for blockading
nominations, dissatisfied democrats
may induce Bert Honey to run
against Watkins. Well it's a scrap
alright.

"Lindy Land Here," was the mes

No wonder the modern railroad
