He promises to be the best all-around hand ever. He never asks for a day off. He never wants to go to town. He is on the job, day and night, and ready to go to work on a moment's notice. Not only does' he help with the chores, but he makes hay when the sun isn't shining. He has put bees on a mass production basis. He makes hens lay as many eggs in winter as in summer. He makes cows give the same quality of milk when they are standing in the barn, chewing cuds, as when they are out in the green pastures in the spring. He has even controlled the maturity date of crops. Electricity is this new farm hand. It is showing the farmer tricks he never dreamed of, tricks that may afford a greater ' measure of "agri cultural relief" than the congression al farm experts, working overtime. "Violet Bay," the little sister of electricity, is this new marvel. Vio let promises to become a modern Maude Muller, and so far to outdo Whittier's Maude, as a model dairy maid. By simply touching the back of Old Bossy, or "irradiating;" her, as they call it in the United States De partment of Agriculture, Violet Kay makes the milch cow think the sum mer sun is shining on her back, and she gives milk containing a high per centage of bone-building qualities. All Bossy has to do is to stand at her stanchion and allow the violet rays to play on her back for from fifteen to thirty minutes a day. o THE INJUSTICE OF IT The possibility of technical mani pulation by shrewd lawyers of Am erican law points is the real bas.s for world-wide dissatisfaction over the Sacco-Vanzetti case. In England, when a man is found guilty of mur der, his case is settled once and forever, and he receives capital pun ishment within a reasonable length of time. In America it is possible for a convicted client to wear out the resources of one set of lawyers and then employ other counsel to follow up with what they know of the law game. This process of retarding the carrying out of court verdicts is now transpiring at Salem where Kelley and Willos, convicted of participat ing in the slaying of prison guards are being reprieved on one pretext or another. The state is now called up on to prove that Kelley was legally imprisoned at the time he participat ed in the prison break that resulted in the killimr of the guards; as though in any sense of justice illegal confinement in prison would to any extent exonerate him for the crime of which he was convicted. Willos re prieves began with the move by his counsel to prove him insane since his conviction. Alienists found him sane. Nevertheless, lost week he re ceived another 30-day reprieve from the governor, on what grounds is not quite clear, but evidently the gov ernor believes that Willos should mark time with Kelley. o Based on number of pupils en rolled, Athena high school again car ries the banner over all other high schools in Umatilla county for quota of students entering institutions of higher education. This year Athena tops the percentage list with a total of twenty-one students claimed by Uni versity, College and Normal school. From this splendid record it will be seen that Athena maintains una of the very best high schools in the state. The record also discloses that certain rumors of the past to tha cf- that Athena high was low m compared with other schools county and state, are without foundation of fact. Any school the size of Athena high that can muster twenty students on the membership rolls of institutions of higher learn ing is some school, and don't you for get it. Not so bad; only $100,000 above an even break between capital and labor. O " Class 1 railroads operate one freight car for every 45 inhabitants. This in face of the fact that there is one auto truck operating between Portland and Walla Walla. Maybe Levine can do something besides talk, at that. Queen Victoria Story Some amusing stories concerning Queen Victoria are told by Sir Felix Senion In his autobiography. The queen bud n grent sense of dignity, but she also possessed n keen sense of humor. For Instance, when Sir James Held, her majesty's physiciun-In-ordl-nary, became engaged to one of her maids of honor, the Hon. Miss Baring, the queen was exceedingly angry, and. sending for hiin, lectured him severe ly. He ought to have known, she told him, that nobody was permitted to propose to n maid of honor without obtaining the queen's permission, Sir James listened, then humbly answered that her majesty was quite right; be certainly would not do It again I This so strongly appealed to the queen's sense of humor that she laughed heart ily, and without further ado extended her pardon. Strictly Private ne was a newcomer to the bank and consequently found his duties rather hard to remember; but all this was forgotten when he received his first pay envelope. In a businesslike manner he quickly checked the contents before signing the receipt. Then bis eye caught the words underlined In black: "Your salary Is your personal busi ness and a confidential matter. It should not be disclosed to anyone." The clerk grinned us be picked up a pen and signed bis name. Below he added briefly: "I won't mention It to anyone. ' I am as much ashamed of It as you are." Mr. and Mrs. J. D. The Boeing Air Transportation, in corporated, has taken over all of the air contracts held by the government, and the private concern will develop the business along commercial lines to the extent of carrying passengers and light freight. In pioneering the air lanes for the convenience of man, the" government has borne its share and u little more, of expense in mon ey and human lives. The wholesale value of the Colum bia river salmon pack for 1927 has been placed at $6,100,000, and the in dustry paid 3,000,000 to fishermen.
