The plight of the Stanfield irriga
tion project exists in the private
ownership of 5000 acres out of the
total 8300 acres in the district. The
privately owned 5000 acres is being
held bv the Bank of California ana
the Furnish investment company for
speculative purposes, and until these
interests are satisfied to take a
fair price for their holdings, the
government refuses to take any ac
tion whatever in widening the pres
ent canal system of the district, to
carry the water from McKay dan.
Replying to a plea for government
assistance, Dr. Elwood Mead who re
cently visited the project, is quoted
as saying: "We want to sell the
water in the McKay reservoir, but
the excess land owners must practic
ally surrender their property so that
a price can be fixed on the land that
will prove attractive to settlers be
fore the government gives assistance.
We will not do anything unless the
non-resident owners agree to a rea
sonable price.

Through every newspaper office
day after day go all the weaknesses
of the world all the vanities that
want to be puffed, all the revenges
that want to be reaped, all the mis
takes that want to be corrected, all
the dull speakers that want to be
thought eloquent, all the meanness
that tries to get its wares noticed
gratis in order to save the tax of
the advertising column. Through
the editorial and reportorial rooms
all the follies and shams of the world
are seen day after day, with the re
sult that the average newspaper
writer is at times tempted to believe
that all humanity is steeped in folly
and deceit. There is no room for
surprise in finding that men in this
profession are more skeptical than
others.
A commendable portion of the
work recently done by the county
health nurse is that of bringing
about what is termed "summer
round-up clinics." These clinics bring
together the children of the county
who will be entering school for the
first time at the fall or mid-winter
terms during the next school year
The method is employed for con
venience of examining into the child's
physical and mental condition, in
order that corrective measures may
be taken to rectify deficiencies be
fore the child enters upon its school
work.

Valentino's "The Eagle"
"The Unknown Soldier," which
was to have been presented at the
Standard last Saturday evening will
be shown tomorrow night. Here is
a photoplay of high grade, a big
theme finely developed, with massive
settings and stirring incidents.
Sunday night, Antonio Moreno and
Patsy Ruth Miller will be seen in
"Her Husband's Secret," taken from
May Edington's Saturday Evening
Post story, "Judgment" Frank
Lloyd, who made "The Sea Hawk,"
"Black Oxen" and "The Silent
Watcher" is the director.
The Standard's mid-week picture
next Wednesday night will be "The
Eagle" featuring Rudolph Valentino,
Vilma Banky and Louise Dresser,
This gorgeous production at regular
admission prices was adapted for the
screen by Hans Kraly, from the
story by Alexander Pushkin.
As though the country were not
broken enough through flood ca
lamity, in which thousands of peo
ple have been driven out homeless
and facing dire distress, the mid
west and southwest states are bat
tling with cyclones and tornadoes. The
year of 1927 bids fair to go down in
history with a record for catastro
phes inherited from elements over
which mankind has no control.
Recent astronomical discoveries re
veal that the so called canals on the
planet Mars are in truth groups of
vegetation. The further discovery
that Mars has atmosphere compar
able to the earth's atmosphere would
indicate that the planet, located some
;;5,500,000 miles from us, is inhabited
by grasshoppers instead of canal
toads.
For the first time since the war,
cattlemen are realizing fair prices
for their beef steak. Last week av
erage steers sold at Baker for eight
cents on hoof. It has taken a long
time for the old saying that "beef
will come back again" to be realized
by the stockraiser but when it
conies, it's here.

We read whore growers have already
pooled 75 per cent of the crop, which
we have been led to believe did not
exist.
Now that a good grade artificial
silk is being made from cornstalks,
Peoria, Illinois, is boosting for a
$2,000,000 silk factory, and the ladies
of all corn-growing states are "'sit

The federal government will build
$533,000 worth of national forest
roads in Oregon this year, and a few
trails on the side.
We find that New Zealand is also
infested with radicals. A train carry

Unity Church Discussed
A group of Athena people interest
ed in organizing a Unity church
here, met at the Masonic Hall Tues
day evening to discuss the matter.
A splendid musical program preced
ed a talk by Clifton A. Phillips
former pastor of th local Church of
Christ. Mr. Phillips and others feel
that Athena is too small a commun
ity to support the several churches
now here, and that by concerted ac
tion and unified organization, much
more might be accomplished. The
meeting closed with no definite plans
being made.

SODA FOUNTAIN
WEEK
With a big celebration .crowd, in
eluding many notables present, Gov
ernor Patterson opened the needle
valves of McKay Dam Tuesday after
noon, and the first impounded flo'.d
waters gushed forth over the bed of
McKay creek.
The governor's -act was a part of
the dedicatory program, which was
participated in by Dr. Elwood Mead
of the federal reclamation bureau;
Congressman N. J. Sinnitt, Senaior
Steiwer and others.
The program was arranged by
Hermiston people and the Pendleton
Commercial Association, terminated
in the evening with a banquet; at
Hermiston. Following the ceremonies
at the dam, a tour of the irrigation
projects in the west end of the coun
ty was made, many points of interest
being visited by a large number of
people traveling in automobiles.
Each section of the west end had
something impressive to offer in evi
dence of the beneficial results that
have accrued under development
through irrigation, and the increase
of production when the McKay wa
ter is brought into use.
