Lorena Schubert ypent Saturday with friends in Walla Wnlla. Mrs. Bryce Baker and Mrs. Victor Hirsch were in Walla Walla Wednes day. Dr. W. G. Cowan accompanied by his mother, spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. A. L. Douglas of lone, is visiting at the home of his son Art Douglas in Athena. Miss Maebelle Duncan, nurse, is attending Mrs. John Walker during her illness. Tom Keatinp prominent realtor of Pendleton was a business visitor here Wednesday. Miss Emma Ringel and Miss Thel ma Schrimpf were Walla Walla vis itors Saturday. Frank Jackson came over from Weston Monday, and transacted busi ness in Athena. Born To Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Parris, at their home near Athena, April 12, a daughter. Miss May French of Ileppner, is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Orell McPherrin. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke Sr., will sail May 4th for Germany on the steamer Cleveland. J. E. Jones, rural mail carrier, is driving a new Chevrolet roadster on his route out of Athena. James Cresswell, Ralph Singer and F. W. Knight joined the family of Press readers, this week. Mrs. C. L. McFadden and children were guests at the John ' Banister home in Weston, Monday. Superintendent of schools Ycager and Mrs. Yeager were in Athena Wednesday, from Pendleton. Mrs. Lee Whitehead has been con fined to her home for several days on account of torn ligaments in her foot. Goethe's "Faust" Standard Theatre, Sunday night. H. I. Watts and E. C. Prestbye loc al attorneys are attending circuit court at Pendleton this week. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Payne and small son have moved to La Grande, where Mr. Payne has employment. The meeting of the Athena Study club will be held next Friday after noon at the home of Mrs. Bollinger. A number of Athena people attend ed the Elk's show, "Days of '49" motoring to Pendleton for the event. Athena farmers are well advanced in their plowing operations, and many will finish their work next week. Mrs. Rose Miller has returned to Athena, after a month spent with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel in Milton. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Martin and children visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Mctsker at Fruitvale, Sunday During the absence of A. R. Thompson Saturday and Sunuay M. I. Miller managed the Thompson Garage. " Mrs. James Morgan is here from Sunnyside, Washington, where she has been visiting at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Henry Wood, who is ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles McFarland, is reported to be no better. Loraine Shick has given his Ford coupe the twice over with a varnish brush. The result is a bright, shin ing black job. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stockstill are living at the Athena Hotel, where Mrs. Stockstill has charge of the din ing room tables. Misses Thena Russell, Lenore Mc Nair, Jessiedeane Dudley and Al berta Charlton were visitors at Wal la Walla Saturday. Painters from Portland are assist ing Justin Harwood in finishing the interior of the new home of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Watts. Mrs. Hamp Booher is in Walla Walla visiting at the home of her brother Alf Johnson, and is taking medical treatments. Mrs. S. F. Sharp and daughter, Mrs. Heinen, motored to Pendleton, Tuesday. Mrs. Sharp's health is gradually improving. Gasoline price dropped in Athena Wednesday morning at service sta tions to 21 cents per gallon. McEwen who has been ill at a Walla Walla hospital, is convalescing at the home of her mother near that city Bert Logsdon and daughter Donna Jean motored to Dayton, Tuesday, where Mr. Logsdon visited his fath er who is critically ill. A. L. McEwen reports growing grain in his section to be well ad vanced in growing condition, with in dications strong for a good crop. The new elevator being built here will be finished in plenty of time for the coming harvest. The new build ing is on quite an extensive scale. Three taps on the fire bell is to notify water users that the water is to be turned off, and to give them opportunity to draw water supply. Jack Cunningham, salesman of Delco light plants and Frigidaire cabinets was in Athena from Pendle ton Saturday, transacting business. A silver tea will be given by the Christian Missionary society next Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Boyd. You are cordially invit ed. S. S. Parris, who suffered a slight stroke of paralysis a couple of weeks ago is rapidly regaining his health. Mr. Parris' throat was affected for a while. Word received this week of Cleve Stanton is that he is in a very critic al condition in a Bend hospital, and small hopes are entertained for his recovery. Ernest Bell who is farming the home place south of Athena, receiv ed a large number of day old chicks from a Salem commercial hatchery, Wednesday. The next meeting of the W. C. T. U. will be held Tuesday April 26, at the Christian church, at which time the young mothers of the community will be entertained. Mrs. John Stanton spent Sunday with her daughter, Miss Mildred Stanton, who is taking the course of professional nurse at St. Anthony's hospital' at Pendleton. Charles Russell has become a per manent fixture at Penn Harris' bar ber shop. He will specialize in la djes' hair cutting, as he did former ly before leaving Athena. Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11 have been selected as the dates for holding the thirty-fifth annual re union of the Umatilla County Pion eers' association at Weston. Word has been received in Athe na by friends of Miss Elsa Ringel who is a student in the 0. A. C. at Corvallis, that she is in the college hospital, a victim of the mumps. Sims Dickenson wouldn't mind tak ing a shot at the Press cartoonist Sims finds no fault with him as an artist, but he thinks the crayon man is the bunk as a weather prophet. The condition of Fred Hodgen, who was recently taken to St. Anthony's hospital, Pendleton, is reported to be unsatisfactory and the patient may be taken to Portland for treat ment. The Legion boys announce a dance at Legion Hall tomorrow night. Last Saturday night's dance was well at tended, other towns and communities being represented more than custo mary. Earl Storm a well known athlete of Milton several years ago, was re cently united in marriage to Miss Rhae Sullivan at Salt Lake. Mr. Storm is employed in the Forestry service. Charles Gcrking was in town Wed nesday from the ranch. He has com pleted his plowing, using a 30 Best caterpillar and a four-bottom gan.j; plow. Charles says it is some plow ing rig. Miss Jaunita Woodruff and Miss Dorothy Lee' returned to Cheney, Sunday after spending the spring vacation with relatives in Athena. Frank Williams driving them there by motor. While working at the Tum-a-Lum lumber yard Wednesday, Frank Bol in had the middle finger of his left hand badly mashed between two heavy timbers. Dr. Sharp dressed the injury. Mrs. John Walker has been ser iously ill at her home south of Athe na. Last week her condition was critical, but at this writing she is some better, her many friends' will be glad to learn. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel and little daughter Beverly of Mil ton and Mr. and Mrs. George Banist er, who reside on a ranch near Wal la Walla, spent Sunday in Athena with relatives. Nightly rehearsals for the annual high school play are progressing on the stage at the school auditorium, with the result that the cast are well up in their lines under direction of Miss Bateman. The Ladies Aid society of the Christian church will give a sale of cooked food and dressed thickens to morrow in the Eastern Mercantile store. Call and get something good for your Sunday dinner. Rev. Phillips, accompanied by his wife and little son, has gone to his ranch in Wallowa county, where he will rest from his pastoral work for; a couple of weeks. Last Sunday, morning and evening, the Christian church pulpit was occupied by Rev. Gilstrap, of Eugene. Improvements, including a change in the location of the furnace, are being made on the interior of the Baptist church. Also the parking and lot will be plowed and seeded to alfalfa in the near future. Mrs. Lillian Dobson was in the city Sunday from her school at Yoak um, accompanied by her sister-in- law, Mrs. Arthur Downs of Portland, who is her guest. They made calls on a number of Athena friends. Today the fishing season opens, and while the waters of the trout streams are at a high stage, a num ber of local anglers are whipping favorite spots in the hope of luring speckled beauties nto their creels. C. E. Miller and son Leon, have gone to Eastern Washington to in vestigate the prospects for well drilling. They have done consider able drilling in that section, and have been successful in securing wa ter. A heavy frost visited this part of the county Sunday night. Monday morning the ground was white with frost and some varieties of vegeta tion dropped to the ground. Howev er, no material damage has been reported. Mrs. Ora bhigley who has been a patient at St Mary's hospital in Wal la Walla for the past three weeks following an operation, was brought to her home in Athena, Tuesday af ternoon and is reported to be con valescing nicely. Edwin McEwen is catering to Standard Theatre patrons with crisp packages of hot popcorn on show nights. He is established next door to the theatre with Pete McFadden's electric popper , all dolled up with lights 'neverything. t Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. F. S. LeGrow returned Sunday from Port land, where they spent several days last week. Mrs. Watts' time in the metropolis was exclusively occupied in purchasing furniture and fixtures for her beautiful new Athena home. The ladies motored to Portland and return. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Nicholas of Rossland, B. C, and Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Barnes of Weston were dinner guests Wednesday at the Boyd home. Mr. Nicholas is a diamond drill ex pert, employed in the British Col umbia mines, and his wife was form erly Doris Barnes, of Weston, a niece of Mrs. Boyd. Pete Abercrombie was in Athena recently on his way to Seattle. Mr. Abercrombie and Dr. Froom have disposed of their interests at St. Vin cent, Canada,' and Dr. and Mrs. Froom are at Boise, Idaho, where the lady this week submitted to a major surgical operation. Dr. Froom arrived in Athena yesterday morn ing. The J. T. club met last Friday at the home of Mrs. Will Piper and all members report a very pleasant af ternoon. Guessing games and con tests were the principal diversions of the afternoon. Mrs. Dean Dud ley and Mrs. Sheldon Taylor served most delicious Tefreshments. The club is meeting this afternoon with Mrs. Herb Hales at her home west of Athena. At the time Henry Schroeder re ceived a severe cut on the arm, while removing a glass from one of the large windows in the telephone building, Frank Chamberlain, who was assisting, received a cut on his right foot by the broken glass. Since then Mr. Chamberlain has been greatly troubled with the foot which so far has not yielded satis factorily to medical treatment. Marshal Taylor, in addition to his arduous duties as city marshal, water superintendent and constable, finds time somehow to Conduct a dairy. Apparently not having his time whol ly occupied by the above enumerated occupations, he proposes to engage in farming on a modest scale hav ing leased the two acre .tract adjoin ing the city park, from Lawrence Pinkerton. The mid-week special for next Wednesday evening at the Standard Theatre, will be "The Flaming Front ier," a photoplay extraordinary at regular admission prices, depicting General Custer's last stand against the Sioux. The leading parts are tak en by Hoot Gibson, Dustin Famum and Ann Cornwall. A portion of the scenes were filmed at Barnhart Sta tion, in Umatilla county. There was a goodly number present at the meeting of Mignonette Rebek ah lodge Tuesday evening. Delegates were nominated for Grand lodge to be held at Astoria in May. Those nominated were Mrs. Bert Logsdon and Mrs. H. J. Cunningham and al ternates were Mrs. Bryce Baker and Mrs. Lloyd Mitchener. A most en joyable social hour was spent and de licious refreshments were served by Mrs. Lloyd Mitchener, Mrs. Ora Smith and Mrs. Bryce Baker. A committee of three, Mrs. H. H.
