Mellon administers a stinging rebuke in his most crush ing reply he has yet made to the pro-cancellationists. Outstanding ar guments advanced by him are: That the former allies, far from being "burdened" by American terms are collecting in German reparations "more than enough to pay their debts to the United States." France, ac cording to Mellon, is collecting enough this year to pay both this country and Great Britain and pocket $75, 000,000 besides. That the net effect of scaling down debts and reparations alike would be "to transfer the burden of repara tions payments from the shoulders of the German taxpayer of those of the American taxpayer." That the affection of other nations is not "a' purchasable commodity." That America paid hundreds of millions in cash to France and Great Britain for war-time supplies and services which no one has proposed to turn back in canceling the debt while America lent vast sums to the allies to finance their purchases. . That the professors' statement was made up of "conclusions unsupported by facts." o The fact that Coolidge aspires to the presidency doesn't necessarily mean that the Republican party can not easily sidetrack him when the proper time arrives. He is already facing a split party organization, and the split is so great that it is a question should he receive the nom ination whether he could be elected over a democratic candidate, other than Al Smith. The democrats too, are having sorrows of their own, but not to the extent of those following in the wake of the g. o. p. machine. The Bourbons have Tammany to deal with, and the tiger is sharpen iqg his claws for the fray. From a distance it looks like McAdoo is ex pected to be the Moses who will lead the rank and file of the demos eith er to victory or to slaughter in the next presidential campaign. o One newspaper attributes fre quency of suicide among high school and college students being noticable to the fact that percentage of at tendance at educational institutions has more than trebled in the last few years. In a measure this doubt less is true, and the fact that many of our colleges are overcrowded, nec essarily reacts in disadvantage to those students who are slow of com prehension in their studies, and to others who are handicapped by lack of finances to carry them through without employment in connection with their school work. No matter what the cause, it is grievously evi dent there exists at the present time suicidal inclination among students to a degree that is startling, o The La Grande Observer has it sized up this way: Vice-President Dawes stands justified. The heroic silence he maintained during th) closing days of the session gave all the more force to the senate's dread ful example of unlimited debate. The last week in the senate was a night mare of filibustering, wrangling, confusion, ill temper and general inept ness. The senate tied itself in to knots, making the transaction of business almost impossible, just at a time when it was especially desir able for that body to be calm, clear headed and efficient. o We'll bet that every Chinaman in China and America, too is aware of the fact that 1500 United States "devil dogs" are parading the streets of Shanghai. And if there is any shanghaing to be done, every moth er's son of them will be yelling, "let me do it!" o Jim Mays, a Wyoming editor has been arrested for selling moonshine to supplement his income from hh newspaper. Here in Oregon the supplementary angle is decidedly dif ferent; inasmuch as the income from the average Oregon paper goes for automobile upkeep instead of booze. o The constitutionality of the flex ible provisions of the tariff law, whereby the president may raise or lower import duties 50 per cent, has been upheld by a unanimous opinion of the United States Court of Cus toms Appeals. The court held that delegation of such authority to the President was a valid exercise of the constitutional grant of power to Congress to regulate commerce. With this information at hand, would it be wise to predict that Cal will low er any import duty any part of the flexible 50 per cent scale? o Valdez, old Alaskan mining camp, has been rediscovered and old and young prospectors are working it again and not in vain. Valdez ia the recent attraction for gold hunters in Alaska, and is the seat for the larg est gold rush of the north. o "Spring Arrives in Docile Mein,' reads a headline. Well enough! The main thing with us is that she has arrived, and we don't care whether she is rigged out docily or otherwise. It surely looks as though Mr. Chapman, Oregon tax doctor and big business pet, will have to swal low the Patterson remedy without sugar. o Flapper gold diggers have been wiring for claim reservations at Weepah. Sure, "hold 'em and weep," ah! o A reverse curve is a reverse curve; a Cadillac driven at 75 miles per, to the contrary notwithstand ing. o Jew suppose Henry Ford will win out in the Sapiro damage suit? o Browning got his divorce; Peache? gets nothing. Pheasants Hatch Early A pheasant hen has the world's record for rushing the season. For the first time in the history of the Oregon state game department, a Chinese pheasant hen has hatched her young in the early part pf March. Charles McClees, Malheur game warden, was astounded by the report which came from Stanley Woodward. Nearly every day last week the proud mother strutted in the Woodward yard with a flock of 13 baby birds trailing around her. The hen is two months ahead of the usual hatching time. The only washing machine in the world that cleanses a 23-galton tuhful of clothes in 4 minutes It is worth any woman's notice that the best working washer that money can buy is also the most attractive. For the Meadows is the only washer that really cleanses a 23-gallon tubful of clothes in 4 minutes. And does the whole job without asking the housewife to come to the rescue on neck-bands and cuffs. The only washer that treats lingerie and filmy things as they were meant to be treated. Here are the reasons for these superb advantages of washing with the Meadows: The tub is 4 gallons bigger; it can be bigger be cause this washer embodies the secret of faster water action; the washing process is gentler, though more thorough, because the Bakelite agitator is forever smooth and does not wear rough and sharp like the metal agitators in other machines. You owe it to yourself to do at least one washing with the Meadows. Our service man can show you how to run it in three rrsi nntpc' hmf this machine has kept a rich promise. , Phone us today for a demonstration. f "lit 1 ROGERS & GOODMAN A Mercantile Trust Fat Prevents Suicide Joe Camper, 350-pound prisoner at the Washington state penitentiary, failed in an attempt to kill himself because he is too fat. Despondent over an order which would require his removal from this country to Chili as an undesirable alien, Camp er attempted to stab himself to death, but because of the layer of fat between ribs and heart his ef forts were unavailing. Camper did manage to cut an artery in his wrist, but the prison physician asserted his belief that the man would recover. Camper was sentenced in Spokane county in August.
