Miss Kuth Proebstel, teacher of
music in the Berney school at Walla
Walla, was a week end visitor at
the home of her mother, Mrs'. Jennie
Proebstel.
Another sign of spring reported by
Ray Gordon is that Monday he made
his entire mail route round with his
automobile, for the first time this
year.
C. E. Fisk was in Athena last
Wednesday evening and enacted the
role of Worthy Patron at an impor
tant installation ceremony of the
Eastern Star chapter. '
The 80th birthday anniversary of
George Waddingham was celebrated
Sunday with an enjoyable family din
ner at his residence in Milton. Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Waddingham and
Frank Waddingham Jr., Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Ross and Neil Ross motored
over from Weston to be present for
the occasion. "
Albert Baker, forest ranger, re
ports that the Skyline road from
Dayton to Tollgate will be completed
before fall. Primarily for fire-fighting
purposes, it will ol?en the high
lands of the reserve to campers and
summer sojourners. Theroad runs
30 miles along the top of the moun
tains and connects with valley roads.

Mrs. Lloyd M. Piper died Tuesday
evening at a Walla Walla hospital
afer a short illness with pneumonia.
She was the wife of Lloyd Piper and
besides her husband leaves two child
ren, the little daughter being very
ill at the present time with the same
illness.
Rev. Proctor had his auto crashed
into when he was making the turn
at the inter-section on Main street
in front of the Milton Drug company,
Monday morning. Mr. Proctor claims
he' gave the signal at the turn but
the stranger who drove the other car
claimed he did not see the signal.
Both parties paid their own damages.
Two hundred prune growers in a
harmonious meeting at the State
Line hall Wednesday afternoon re
elected the temporary board of di
rectors and listened to the report of
the committee that more than 300
growers are signed up with the or
ganization. More than ninety per
cent of the prune tonnage of the val
ley is represented by these growers

R. L. Hcrndon, who has resided on
the L. Keen property near Crockett
station for, several years, has moved
his family into a cottage at Appleton
station recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Paris Metscher and
sons, Roy and Wayne, visited in
Athena with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mar
tin and family. The Martin family
formerly lived at Fruitvale.
Nadine Pittman, who was accident
ally run over by an automobile on
Thursday, was brought home from
the hospital Saturday and is getting
along fine. One ankle bone was brok
en in the accident and her scalp was
lacerated, making a few stitches ne
cessary. "
R. Saxton, who is living at Belling
ham this winter, had the misfortune
to suffer a paralytic stroke Friday.
The same day his two twin daugh
ters Martha and Mary suffered pain
ful injuries when Mary fell and
broke her arm and Martha ran a nail
in her foot. The Saxtion's formerly
resided at Springbrook and have a
host of friends here.
"Tell It To the Marines"
Coining Thursday Night
Metro-Goldwyn's big super-special
production, "Tell It To the Marines,"
With Lon Chaney in the leading role,
supported by a big all-star cast in
cluding Eleanor Boardman, William
Haines and Carmel Myers, has been
booked for showing at the Standard
Theatre next Thursday evening,
March 24. The day of showing was
necessarily changed from Wednesday
on account of the demand for this
mighty epic of Uncle Sam's Marines.
It is the first of the mid-week super
specials to be shown at the Standard
in connection with specials now
showing.

John Stanton has returned from
Ontario, Oregon, where he went a
couple of. weeks ago,

In the banks of Heppner there is
now at least $150,000 which is to be
offered for sheep at last year's prices
which were $1 for yearlings, and
1.50 for two-year-olds. . Sheepmen
do not feel inclined to sell at these
prices. It is estimated that the
Heppner sheep market at the present
time consists of nearly 150,000 sheep.
James Semple, the farm hand, who
was injured while removing a header
bed from a wagon on the farm of
Chris Simpson near Helix, one day
last week, is dead. His injuries
were such that an operation was
deemed necessary to save his life,
but he could not survive the opera
tion. The remains were conveyed to
McKay creek, where the parents of
the unfortunate young man live.
Farmers are again busy plowing
and seeding, after a temporary rest
caused by the late freeze.
Prof. M. G. Royal, of the Weston
normal school, will preach in the M.
E. church next Sunday morning.
Charles Norris has leased the
"Till" Taylor property and will soon
take possession. Charley promises
to show the editor a garden there,
that will make even a son of the
Flowery Kingdom green with envy.
Popular primaries were held in
Athena precincts Wednesday. The
voting was extremely light, and it
was with some delay that the poll3
were arranged. Ten delegates and
ten alternates were elected xo the
county convention, which meets in
Pendleton on Wednesday next-. The

Angus Gillis and John Echart have
nearly completed the belfry for the
big bell at the Baptist church. The
bell was hoisted yesterday from the
ground to its resting place in the
belfry.
The young son of Mr. Louie La
Brashe met with a painful accident
by being thrown from a horse near
Sam Purdy's place yesterday, while
on his way to town.
Turner Callendor is a genius of no
small calibre. His latest in the line
of invention is a sail, which he uses
to propel his bicycle to good advantage.

The sectional declamatory contests
are being held at' Adams this year.
Representatives from Helix, Weston,
Adams, Athena and district 69 are
competing. The winners in these
contests will take part in the county
contest which will be held in Pendle
ton about the first of April. The
grade contest was held last night
and the high school contest comes
this evening. The Judges for the
contest are Pendleton people. The
grade judges were Mrs. Howard
Drew, Miss Gladys Anderson and
Mrs. John Miller. The high school
judges are Carl Chambers, William
Ransom, and Herman Dellart.

After a year's feud between pupils
and Principal Swan of Eugene high
school climaxed in a bucket of lime
so arranged that it spilled on the
principal during assembly hour,
Swan has tendered his resignation to
the Eugene board of education.
