Mountain Road Work Held Up For a Year No Work This Year On the Weston-EIffin Highway Is Report. That nothing will be done this year in the direction of building any sec tor of the Weston-Elgin road is the discouraging news which has reached the Blue Mountain Highway associa tion in a letter to its secretary, Clar ence Avery of Weston. The letter, says the Leader, comes from the district forester's office at Portland under date of February 18, and reads as follows: "At the time your committee, Messrs. Miller, Ritner, Langdon and Barnes, had the conference with Mr. Dater last September, they were as sured that the Forest Service would be glad to see the road constructed between McDougal Camp and Toll gate, at an early date. "At the time of the program con ference with the Oregon Highway Commission on December 1, it was proposed to include the 6-mile sec tion between McDougal Camp and the Tollgate. During the conference a gentleman from Imbler appeared, who claimed to represent the Cham ber of Commerce of Imbler and pos sibly the Chamber of Commerce of La Grande. He argued the merits of a route known as the Thomas Buckles road as against the present proposed Weston-Elgin project. "This action on the part of the Im bler representative resulted in the McDougal-Tollgate section not being included in the road program for this year, even though . the County Commissioners of Umatilla County appeared before the Commission and requested that the project be pro grammed. "As a result of the statements made by the Imbler representative to the State Highway Commission, as to the desirability of the Ruckles route, it was decided to have an in vestigation made of both rgutes the coming field season, and reports filed by the Bureau of Public Roads and the Forest Service. "In this connection the Forest Service to complete the road between Godman Springs and Tollgate this year, and we are, therefore, particul arly desirous of obtaining a - better road from Tollgate to-McDougal. This information was given to Representative Summers by our let ter of December 30 to the Forester, and, no doubt, forms the basis of his telegram to your Association. "As before stated, this office is particularly desirous of the early construction of this section of road, and we trust it will be provided for in the next year's program.'' Blue Mountain League Original entries from the towns of Baker, La Grande, Pendleton and Walla Walla will comprise the teams in the Blue Mountain base ball lea gue, which will swing into actiqn April 17. With no restrictions against salaries or the playing of professionals fast ball is expected in the towns of the circuit. Man Who Married at' Walla Walla Now Held In a Chicago Murder Delbert C. Prevoe, , 27, husband of a 15-year-old girl and illegal husband of another woman, Tuesday was held by Chicago police as a suspect in the murder of pretty Mrs. Mabel Wood 18, whose body was found in a bathtub of her hotel room at Chi cago. Of his 10 children, three survive, with" 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Mr, Graham was a charter member of Weston Masonic lodge, 31 Years Ago February 27. 1896 Edgar Nye, (Bill Nye) the cele brated humorist is dead. The an nouncement of his death will cause sadness wherever the English lan guage is spoken throughout the world. His mission was to make men happier asd he succeeded well. This world has been too long regard ed as a place of penance and "a vale of tears" through which mankind should pass with lengthened faces and solemn tread. Mr. Nye has liv ened things up considerably during his short career, and humanity is his debtor. One heart-felt laugh is of more value than all the tears that were ever shed. In the untimely death of this gifted and tender-hearted man one ray of sunlight has been taken from the world and darkness comes again, to that extent. Our friend, Joseph Rainville, is surely having more than his share of ill luck. Not long ago, he lost his fine home and all it contained, to gether with his barn, outbuildings, etc, by fire. One day last week his smoke-house, which contained 2,200 pounds of bacon, hams and shoulders, in process of preserving, were con sumed by the fiery element. Some of the meat that was in the smoke house belonged to neighbors. The fire originated from smoldering em berson the ground floor of the build ing. County School Superintendent Woodruff visited the Athena public school Wednesday afternoon. County Clerk Ben Burroughs was up from Pendleton Sunday, a guest at the home of G. W. Hansell. E. L. Barnett and family arrived in Athena this week, from Colton, Washington. Mr. Barnett has assum ed his duties as cashier of the First National Bank. Saturday last a serious accident happened to the little son of Mr E. Pickel, the new photographer, who has recently arrived in Athena. It seems the little fellow was playing about the studio, when a heavy counter fell on the child's leg, result ing in a very painful fracture. A number of the young friends of Mrs. C. C. Sharp, surprised her at her home last evening. Games and refreshments. Those present were: Misses Ruby and Iva Callendar, Lida Beale, Bell Johnson, Hattie and Tillie V. Luria, Mae and Lillie Fischer, and MessrsJohn -Foss,. Charlie and Fred Fischer, Charlie Stansel, Dick Ma loney, Charles Henry and Alf John son, Pursuant to a call recently issued by Chairman Livermore, the Umatil la county republican central commit tee met in the court house at Pen dleton, Saturday, and took prepara tory steps looking toward the hold ing of primaries and conventions to nominate a ticket for the coming June election. Agency at Pendleton, Oregon, Feb ruary 22 Since we, the Umatilla In dians, became citizens we are losing our people very fast. We now have lost eight persons from drinking whiskey. Before we were citizens we never lost any of our people in this way. Whiskey is what keeps our people poor; they drink up all the money they get hold of and buy nothing for their families. The whites are glad for they are wishing all In dians dead so they can get our land. I, Young Chief, keep telling my brothers and friends not to drink or it will kill them all and then the whites will get our lands; for I know that if my people keep on drinking they will soon die away, and this is all I got to say to my white friends. YOUNG CHIEF. That Athena Hose company, No. 1, are alive and proficient in their work, is duly attested by the extraordinarv quick maneuvering of last Saturday evening. Foreman C. C. Sharp rang in a surprise on the boys. In four minutes from the first tap of the bell water was issuing in a seething stream from-a nozzle on Main street. The company was unprepared for the call, but with promptness was the above quick time made. Odd Fellow Contest At the annual district convention of Odd Fellows, held at Echo, Satur day the degree team from the Stan- field lodge won the contest in com petition witfi other teams of the Um atilla and Morrow county lodges. Weston was selected as the place of the next annual convention. NOTICE OF FINAL ACCOUNT In the County Court of the State of Oregon for Umatilla County.
