funeral of Mrs. John Banister in

The new home of Mr. and Mrs. W.
S. Ferguson is completed, and thy
will move into it soon.
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. McEwen and
family returned home Wednesday
from Walla Walla where they spent
Christmas.

Mr. and Mrs. James Creswell were
in Forest Grove, over Christmas at
the home of Mrs. Creswell's parents
Miss Jennamae Read has recover
ed her health to the point where she
is able to be out of the house for a

othy Geissel spent the past week in
Milton at the home of Mr. and Mra.
Lowell Harder.
A number of Athena friends re
ceived greeting cards from Mr. and
Mrs. I. W. Ware, who are now resid
ing in California.
Mr. and Mrs. James F. Twohy of
Portland, spent yesterday at the
home of Mrs. Twohy's parents, Mr
and Mrs. F. B. Boyd.
Plasterers and carpenters continue
to work on the interior of the new
Watts residence at corner of Fourth
and Jefferson streets.
Fred Kershaw returned home from
Ontario, Malheur county, Sunday
evening, where he and Mrs. Ker

ents. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel who
have spent the past two weeks in
Athena with relatives and friends re
turned to their home in Milton, Wed
nesday morning.
Mrs. Ralph Haynie, of Bend, who
was reported seriously ill with pneu
monia a couple of weeks ago, 1j re
covering, and her little daughter i3
also getting well.
Misses Freda and Anna Plucker
were Athena visitors Wednesday
making the trip from their home at
Thorn Hollow on horseback on ac
count of snow drifts.
Mr. and Mrs. John Stanton came
in from the Walter Adams ranch,
Wednesday. There is plenty of snow
out that way, mostly in drifts, which
makes jitneying difficult.

and colleges will return to their ed
ucational institutions tomorrow and
Sunday, after . having spent the
Christmas holidays at their homes
here.
Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Russell came
up from Stanfield, where Mr. Rus
sell is superintendent of schools, and
spent Christmas at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Chamberlain, in
Athena.
Miss Hazel Sanders,- who teaches
school at Ashland, and Claud Sanders
of Portland, arrived in Athena Sat
urday morning to spend the holidays
with their parents Mr. and Mrs. D.
H. Sanders.
Tonight at Legion Hall, Athena
Weston Legion Post gives a New
Year's eve dance, at which special
features, in addition to good music
by the Jolly Joy-Maker's orchestra,
will be in evidence. A big crowd is
expected.
Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Mansfield and
Miss Velva Mansfield of Pendleton,
Mr. and Mrs. Akins of State Line,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Loney and son
Dean of Milton were guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Logsdon
Christmas.
Miss Martha Hutt came over from
Walla Walla, Tuesday, and spent the
day with friends in Athena. Miss
Hutt is teaching school near Marsh
field, and came up to spend Christ
ams with her mother and sister, at
Walla Walla.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert
Ramsay was made especially happy
Christmas day, when it was bright
ened by all members being present,
including a daughter who resides in
Portland, and the son, a recent ar
rival from Idaho.
Harry May, son of Charles May,
former Weston Mountain farmer, i.
here spending the week at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones. Charles
May and family are now residents of
Ashland, where Mr. May is conduct
ing a meat market.

their recent hunting trip, have been
received by Mr. Hansell. The pictures
show an ideal hunter's camp, in
which are displayed trophies of the
hunt.
Weather . conditions for the past
week have contributed greatly to
general storage of moisture. With
moderate temperature and chinook
winds, five inches of , snow in. the
foothills and lower lands, have been
gradually soaking into the soil.
Mr. and Mrs. David Partch and
children spent Christmas at the home
of Mr.: and Mrs. Marion Hansell.
Mrs. Partch was formerly Miss
Georgia Hansell. They are going to
locate near Garfield, Washignton,
where Mr. Partch will 'engage in
farming.
Charles Bushman, 23, son of Ed.
Bushman of Adams, was killed by
being run over by a train last week
at Toppenish, Washington. The re
mains were brought to Adams and
the funeral was held Wednesday
from St. Andrews Mission, on the
reservation.
Weston Leader: A punch and shear
machine weighing 3600 pounds has
been installed at the Snider Weeder
Works, in readiness for the spring
operations. This machine is a great
labor, and time saver and will vast
ly facilitate the process of turning
out weeders.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Myrick enter
tained with a "Tomale" dinner Mon
day evening at their home southwest
of Athena. Those present were Mr.
and Mrs. Raymond Geissel of Milton,
Miss Ethel Geissel and Rose Miller
Five Hundred was also enjoyed dur
ing the evening.
Tomorrow at Umapine, the annual
meeting of the Hbdgen family clans
will gather in reunion. Festival
spreads will be features of the big
gathering at Umapine, and in the
evening, they and their friends will
go to State Line Hall where the an
nual Hodgen dance will be held.
Roland Kretzer member of the Un
iversity of Oregon Glee club, made a
distinctive hit with the Standard
Theatre audience Sunday night, when
he appeared with his local male
quartet in several pleasing numbers.
The quartet is composed of RolanJ
and Dorsey Kretzer, Penn Harris
and Justin Harwood.
The Press is in receipt of a copy
of the Maytag Hotel edition of the
Newton, Iowa, News, comprising
154 pages some newspaper edition
for a town of about, 250,000 inhabit
ants. But Newton is the home of
the Maytag washing machine and
the J. C. Penney company store, of
which W. C. Emmel, formerly of
Athena, is the owner.
George Finch and Jens Jensen
made a trip to Walla Walla Sunday,
to see Elmer Merritt, who recently
had his right leg amputated. While
Mr. Merritt is said to be on the road
to recovery, his condition would not
permit his visitors to see him, but
they left him a Christmas remem
brance in the form of a tidy sum of
cash donated by Athena friends, to
gether with a list of names of those
friends.

Wcod locally known as the "Wood
sies" have received a nice Christ
mas gift from J. H. Price of Long
Beach, California, in the shape of a
telegram announcing that . the Ring
Petroleum Corporation's well at
Huntington Beach has come in for
1500 barrels. The company will at
once proceed to drill another well on
proven ground 300-feet away. Wells
at Huntington Beach are regarded in
oil circles as a substantial asset, as
it is known to be a long-lived field.
The Ring concern owns and operates
a number of wells in other fields, but
they are all "pumpers."
A Bogus Outfit
It transpires that a La Grange,
Texas, outfit which has been carry
ing advertisements in newspapers of
fering to sell oranges direct to the
consumer, is a bogus concern, arid
that the postal authorities have or
dered return of all mail sent to it.
