The agricultural colleges in the thirteen states represented have been asked to determine the cost of pro ducing the staple products in the states, plus five per cent profit, as a basis for market levels. The Federa tion will present the computations to congress with the demand that ag riculture be put on an even footim? with other protected and prosperou industries, the slogan being "I'rotej iion for All or Protection for None." A movement is under way for the r.outh to join with the west in sun ort of the export program and be cause of the depression in cotton it is expected it will succeed. The Mc-Nary-IIaugen bill was defeated the last session of congress. o Interesting comparisons are ad vanced in a statement just issued by che National Industrial Conference J.oard, which cites tax rate3 in sev eral of the principal cities of the country with direct reference to municipal ownership of utilities. The fact that the people of Oregon have only recently voted on a state wide measure involving the broad principle of government operation lends pai--ticular interest to the figures issued by this board. With a given index number of 100 per cent as the av erage of the United States with re spect to living costs, it is stated of ficially that five cities are the most expensive in the country to live in at present, and their ratings follow: San Francisco, 112; Cleveland, 113.4; Jacksonville, 115.6; Detroit, 118.1; Seattle, 123.8. tion, there is one left for the enter tainment of fans who will pay the price to see an exhibition of bone crushing the wrestling game.
