Press Paragraphs Lorain Shirk has returned from a trip to Portland. Green Estes was in town from Pen dleton, Wednesday. Glenn Dudley spent Sunday with friends at Pendleton. Methodist ladies Bazar and dinner next Saturday, December 4th. Mr. and Mrs. Max Hopper wen visitors in Walla Walla Tuesday. Mrs. F. S. LeGrow and Mrs. Henry Dell spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. Mrs. L. McNair will be hostess to the. Study club next Friday afternoon Jack Cunningham, now of Pendle ton, made business calls in Athena Tuesday. Ralph Tucker prominent Weston farmer was a business visitor here Wednesday. The past week has been a stormy one. Sodden skies with niucn rain fall and fog, has been dished np by the weather man. Mrs. Raymond Geissel of Milton, spent the week end in Athena, at the home of relatives. N. A. Miller spent Thanksgiving day in Walla Walla, at the home of his son Roll Miller. The Christian Missionary society will meet at the home of Mrs. Stella Keen next Wednesday. Mrs. Celia Burden has as her guest this week, Mrs. Wendell Taylor (Alice Gaines) of Medford. Mrs. Martin McLaughlin, of Dun can, was here this week, visiting at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hod gen. Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Kirk wore hen; from the Milton-Freewater district, Tuesday, attending the Rebekah con vention. Mrs. Jennie Barrett left Wednesday for Portland where she will spend the winter with her daughter -Miss Areta Barrett. Charles Wilson, who went to Port land to witness the football game Saturday, remained in the metropolis to visit friends. Mrs. Jack Cunningham and daugh ter Pat, spent Tuesday in Athena, when Mrs. Cunningham attended the ! Rebekah convention. Miss Jennamae Read, who was op- i crated on at Walla Walla, and who has been in a most critical condition, is reported to bo slowly recuperating and now gives her relatives hope for recovery. Mrs. S. F. Sharp who has been re ceiving treatment in St. Mary's hos pital in Walla Walla, has returned to her home in Athena. Mrs. John Rothrock of Pendleton, spent the week end in Athena, at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Harden. Mr. and Mrs. Armond DeMerritt of Walla Walla and Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn, were Thanksgiving guests at the Henry Dell home Mrs. Bert Logsdon entertained Mrs. Dora Sexton, president of the Rebek ah assembly, at her home in Athena, during Mrs. Sexton's stay here. C. M. Eager and family motored to Pendleton Thursday where they were present at a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bond. Radio Station KGW at Portland broadcasted the results of the 0. A. C.-Marquette football game Thurs day and the Army-Navy game in Chicago tomorrow. Mrs. George Gerking has received word that her brother, Archie Post-( wick is very ill in Spokane. Mr. ano? Mrs. Gerking will drive to that city to attend the sick man. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Raymond and son Warren, of Mitchell, Oregon, are in Athena and are visiting at the home of Mrs. Raymond's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cass Cannon. Mrs. W. K. Wall had as guests the first of the week, her brother, E. J. Muir of southern Oregon, ar.d his wife. Mr. Muir and Mrs Muir had been visiting their son at Cove. C. L. McFadden and family re turned Tuesday evening from Port land and valley points '"Pete" wit nessed the U. of 0. vs 0. A. C. foot ball game at Corvallis Saturday. Mrs. Phillip Yenney, Mrs. Bertha Yenney of Walla Walla: Mrs. Nellie Taylor of Pendleton and Mr. and Mrs. Bert I ogsdon were guests at dinner of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba, Thurs day of last week. Mrs. William Campbell and son Robert left Wednesday morning for Portland, where she will consult specialists concerning her son Rob ert's eyes. They contemplate being away about a week. The patrons and pupils of LaMar school, north of Athena, participated in a Thanksgiving, program at the school house, Wednesday evening. The program numbers included reci tations etc., after which all present thoroughly enjoyed a fine dinner. Mrs. H. S. Swift is teacher at LaMar, and the evening's program was under her direction. Stanfield Standard: Mr. and Mrs A. R. Coppock were house guests of School Superintendent J. 0. Russell over the week end. They had an op portunity to enjoy the "Feast of the Red Corn." Mr. Coppock is a pros perous farmer from Athena Wild duck is beginning to grace the table of the successful hunter. The main flight of migratory fowl is reported to be coming in at thij time, and fortunate hunters having access to protected preserves, will have some sport from now until the season closes. The picture program at the Stand ard for the week is George O'Brien and Anita Stewart in "Rustling For Cupid," tomorrow night; Richard Barthelmess and Dorothy MacKaill in "Ranson's Folly," Sunday night; Ray mond Griffith in "Hands Up," Wed nesday night. ,Mrs. M. M. Johns left Saturday fpr Portland where she will enter the Portland Sanitariam for the purpose of submitting to a surgical operation. Her son, Flint Johns, went down to Portland Tuesday to be with her. Her many Athena friends hope for her early recovery. Mrs. Herschel Shinall of Portland, spent Thursday visiting in Athena at the homes of Mrs. Martha Shick nd A. E. Shick. She came here from Walla Walla, where she had been visiting her mother, Mrs. I. E. Severson. Mrs. Shinall will be re membered as Olive Shick. A corrugated iron struc ture was bought from the govern ment by the local concern. Herman Geissel, Norman Mclntyre and John Pinkerton motored down to Arlington Saturday night on a goose hunt. Sunday the geese flew high and handsome, out of shooting range so the boys had no shooting. Thev contemplate making a trip in the near future, when they will make special arrangements with the weath er man to give them a day of goose weather whatever that means. Despite the' inclement weather quite an audience was present at high school auditorium, Wednesday afternoon, when the Athena schools rendered the Thanksgiving program The pupils of the grade schools am: the high school department contribu tea to tne success ot the program Immediately after rendition of the program, school was dismissed for the Thanksgiving holiday period. Mr. and Mrs. E. 0. Lee and child ren, left Wednesday afternoon for Harrison, Idaho, where they will vis it the remainder of the week. They will be guests at the home of Mrs Lee's brother T. A. Stott. Dorothy Lee who is attending Cheney Normal school will also be a guest at the Stott home. Phone 171. Athena, Oregon The 5th and 6th grades, entertained assembly Friday morning, with a short program. Those receiving 100 in spelling for the past week in the second grade were: Virginia Eager, Gayle McLean, Teddy Miller and Glen Moore. The high school took the quarterly tests the first of the week. The school board met recently and decided that the Christmas vacation should start Thursday evening De cember 23. School will convene again January 3. Arrangements were also made to trade in two old typewriters for new ones. Word was received recently that G. W. Hall, who preceeded Mr. Hadley as head of the Athena schools, is the victim of cancer and the doctors say he will not live more than two weeks. Those receiving 100 last week in spelling in the Fifth & Sixth grades are: Leo Geissel, Marjorie Montague, Maxine Moore, Ralph Moore, Howard Reeder, Ronald Richards, Wendell Shigley, and Lowell Jenkins. Miss Sellars is spending the Thanksgiving holidays in Portland. Miss Terry is at her home at Rosalia, Washington. Mr. Stolzheise witnessed the foot ball game between Whitman ' and Willamette at Walla Walla Thanks giving day, after which he left for his home in Salem. . Miss Bateman is at her home in Milton. Miss Cornelison went to Walla Walla for the Home-coming between Whitman and Willamette. Mr. Miller and fam ily were in Walla Walla. Miss Rod man remained in Athena and Mr. Hadley and family were dinner guests of Mrs. Dubois and Mis Al len of Adams. Ihe Round Robin basket ball tournament, which has been in pro gress at the high school for the last two and a half weeks, was conclud ed Tuesday evening. This tourna ment was planned to give every boy in high school a chance to play and show what he could do in the way of making baskets. There were six teams entered, five from the high school, and one from the grades. The high school teams were captain ed by the Senior basket ball letter men. He is nuoted as being well pleased with the prospects for this year. The Junior class entertained the Senior class and the faculty at the home of Clifford Woods last Friday evening. Various games and dancing furnished the entertainment for the evening after which delicious refresh ments were served. Mrs. Fred Hansen of Holdman com pleted the painting of the interior scenery for the stage Tuesday.
