WHY? Because there is not a single bed anywhere in Eastern Oregon for a tuberculosis patient who needs it. Because there are at this moment about 500 people in Eastern Oregon who can have sanatorium care ha3 a better chance of recovery than one who can't. Because the only State Sanatorium we have in Oregon has room for on ly two-thirds of the patients who apply- Because in six years the 413 who made up the other third of thu appli cants never got in at all. Because these people would a, all times have filled another hospital half the size of the present one. Because there is always a long berculosis patient needs sanatorium 44 on September 14th. Thcra will be more in the winter. Last winter the list went as high as 68. Because it is tragedy when a tu berculosis patients needs senatoriuM care and can't have it, just nu n would be if YOU needed it and couldn't have it. Because if we had another sanator ium in Eastern Oregon we could take care of tuberculosis patients when they need it. And because the State Boarl of Control is not permitted to locale any state institution outside of Mar.on County unless the voters authorize it. That's Why! troller of the currency on June CO, showed its deposits to be $734,2150.23; loans $576,027.16; cash on hand $227,304.97. o - The U. S. Department of Agricul ture estimates there will be an in crease of 14 per cent in the acreage of winter wheat in the United States next year, while there will not be any material increase outside of this country. If the winter and spring wheat yields in the United States shall equal the ten year average, the Department estimates the exportable surplus will be considerably larger than that of this year. The Churches Church of Christ "The Christ" will be the theme for the morning sermon. You will want to hear this important theme discus sed. Come! There will be special music by the choir. ENCOURAGING BANKRUPTCY The governor of Oregon comes out and flatfootedly denounces the Ore gon Housewives' Power bill, which would load the state with a $50,00U,- 000 bonded debt for state develop ment of hydroelectric power. He says the bill would be a business-killer in the state, ft tax-raiser and would drive new capital away as it would discourage the development of pri vate industry. The governor simply states facts which are self-evident to nrlybody who takes the time to in vestigate the situation. The advice of the governor in Ore gon would be good in California, where a proposal to issue $500,000, 000 in state bonds is to be voted on by the people, for building state-owned hydroelectric plants. This measure is worse than the Oregon proposal because it would load the state with a much greater per capita debt. There is no more reason why a state should venture into the power business than into the automobile, grocery or newspaper business. No industry is so strictly regulated to day by the state as are power com panies. The state already has the ad vantage of complete control over these properties, without the disad vantages of business entanglements and expense. The voters in Oregon and Califor nia, should rebuke by overwhelming the restless agitators who arc con stantly cluttering the ballot with measures which tend to disturb busi ness conditions, drive capital away and create unemployment. The Manufacturer. o ' The financial status of the Athena district remains undisturbed as a re sult of the closing of the Athena junto Bank, Generally, financial cir--clos and business interests are sub jected to depression locally, in pro portion to the amount of loss sus tained through curtailment of bank ing facilities. In this instance no loss whatever results to tho deposit ors. Arrangements were made by the stockholders of the Athena State Bank for the transfer of its business to an out-of-town bank the Inland Empire Bank of Pendleton. It closed up for tho very simple reason that there is not enough business in Athena for two banking institutions; there never has been, and in all pro bability there never will be. The fact that a Pendleton bank gets some business by the closing of the Athena bank, is secondary in comparison with the knowledge gain ed that Athena, based on present re sources, is but a one bank town. Th. Athena State Hank was managed and conducted perhaps on as conservative banking principles as average coun try Mate banks go, but tha business v ns not heie to sustain it against strong a banking institution i-s the First National Bank of Athena, which in its statement to the comp- jionywooci, Cat Queen Marie or Rumania, who will visit the United States this month, was offered a con tribution of $25,000 for the relief of tho needy children of her kingdom if she will appear one day In the role of a queen in the film now being made here by Edwin Carewe from Count Leo Tolstoi's book "Resurrection."
