That may be the procedure follow ed in the future to control summer temperature in the home. It is easy to conjecture the utilization of a cool ing plant for the modern homo since science has devised systems of re frigeration by cooling the air and removing the moisture from it, there by overcoming the obstacle against circulation. To use the statement of Edward F. Miller, head of the de partment of mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Tech: "The increasing demands upon hu man energy in this age of swift pro gress and keen competition call for new measures lor pnysicai comiort and protection. Extreme summer heat slows human activity and low ers efficiency in all branches of en deavor, -whether it be in factory, of fice building or home. "The household furnace has over come the cold of winter, but human ity still suffers from summer heat. It 'seems likely that within a few years cool rooms in which to work and live will be considered just as much a necessity as warm homes and buildings are in winter. "It is not a serious problem now to produce air-conditioning and cool ing plans for domestic purposes. These will consist of a refrigeration system in which air will be cooled and the moisture removed before it is put into circulation in the build ing." o Time, the healer of wounds, brought together the red and white men who back in 1870 had been en emies, to nay solemn tribute to the memory of Chief Joseph, Indian prince and chieftain of the Nez Per ccs tribe. The occasion was the re moval of the remains of Joseph frohi their resting place of 5G years on a bleak hillside, to a monument covered tomb at the foot of Wallowa Lake, the spot he hud loved so well in life. Respected as a warrior true to his people and to his native hunting grounds, for which he made his fit st and last stand against the ' white man's government, the whites forev er closed the wound when they pro vided the new burial place, and par ticipated in the ceremonies with Nez Perces, the Umatillus, the Cayuses and the Walla Wallas. State market agent's statistics show that between the producers of the eight and nine billions worth of farm products and the ultimate con sumers, nineteen million people were in some manner connected with their handling, and the middle toll of ex pense and profit was from twenty to twenty-one billion dollars, or an av erage of $1078 to each person who had something to do with the pro ducts in their journies from the fields to the kitchen. The producers of the products received but $280 per capita, or 7F cents per day. They leceived only about one-fourth as much per capita as those who hand led them after they were harvested. o When grain treated with copper carbonate is run through the grain drill, especially if the drill is left in the field over night, presence of the metalic dust often causes the me tal parts of the drill to stick, finds the experiment station. Sudden pul ling at such n time may break the machine, hence it is safer to rock the wheels back and forth gently by hand to make sure the parts are mov ing freely. ' o The State Market Agent warns farmers, dealers and retailers to ob serve the grading and sack stenciling of pctatoes. The law prescribes se vere penalties for anyone who docs not prude his stock and mark his sacks before selling or offering for sale. The eanek, or lord of the Itzae, re ceived the Spaniard with courtesy. He embraced Christianity and pledged al legiance to the Spanish king. Cortez remained for a time at Ilaltunna, let ting his force recover from the hard Journey, and when he went on to Hon duras he left behind a lame white horse. This animal lias furnished the flexible Imaginations of Spanish his torians with one of their most pictur esque myths of "Mysterious Peten." For the Indians, so the story runs, having never before seen a horse and, understanding only that It was sick, fed It ns they would have fed a hu man Invalid of more than ordinary Im portance. The poor brute did not long survive a diet of cooked meat, fish and birds. Upon Its death the poor Itzae, who had worshiped It as something rather more than mortal, were fearful of Cor tez' wrath. So they thought to be fool the conqulstadore. They carved from white stone a replica nnd set It up In their chief temple against Cor tez' return.
