"They are simply applying the systems of large private business concerns to their own business in stead of raising the products and turning them over to the middleman." When these organizations are start ed right, have the right men to man age them, and then have control of enough volume, they are bound to be come powerful, says Mr. Spence. Take for illustration the Wheat Pool ' of Western Canada. It is but three years old yet it is the largest co operative organization of its kind in the world. It now has a membership of 125,000 farmers, who control 13, 2!i0,000 of the 21,000,000 acres sown to wheat last year in the three prairie provinces Manitoba, Sask atchewan and Alberta. This organi zation handles the sale of the greater part of the wheat produced in Can ada, and Canada is now the largest exporter of wheat in the world. If this organization controlled but ten per cent of production it would soon go the way of many other weak co-operatives have gone. It's over head would be high and its price-fixing strength would be nil. Cut con trolling such a vast volume its op erating costs amount to but two fifths of one cent per bushel. This is real co-operation. The strength of the organization lies in its stabiliz ing power. It does not permit large Tolumes to be rushed to markets to create gluts and lower prices. Can adians are real co-operators. The principle is almost religion with them. o I'ER CAPITA STATE DEBT A statistical report from the cen sus bureau shows that it costs move ' in taxes to be a citizen in Nevada in the fiscal year ending in 1925, than of any other of the 41 states for which financial statistics have been made public thus far. Ohio and Georgia stood at the oth er end of the line. Per capita pro perty and special taxes amounted to $1.7S) in Ohio, $2.21 in Georgia, and $17.79 in Nevada. Per capita expenditures for main tenance and operation of general de partments of tha state governments, exclusive of payments in connection with public service enterprises, inter est on debts and permanent improve ments were $4.07 in Georgia, $5.16 in Ohio, and $28.75 in Nevada. Orcgonians, however, shouldered the greatest per capita state debt, $47.08, while Ncbrnskans, who owed nothing, and Floridans, whose share of such obligations was only 22 cents each, were best off in this respect, o- Reasons for American prosperity as seen ly two Knglishmen who toured the United States last year and have now published a book on "The Secret of High Wages" are: 1 Promotion in America is by merit. 2. America sticks to the principle of small ..profits and quick returns, and wealth is made by fine margins of profit on immense and rapid turn over, 3. Rapid turnover is secured by simplification and cheapening of processes which necessitates less capital for a given output. 4. Amer ica shows endless keenness in devis ing time-saving and trouble-saving appliances. 5. The American employ er is not hostile to high wages. 0. American manufacturers cuoperate by exchaiging ideas. 7. Americans are vigilant and acute in eliminating waste and in conserving time, energy and space. 8. American welfare mevnous uounie nign wages m Ukmi stimulative effect by surrounding the workers with cleanliness and light and by seeking in every way t increase their convenience and satisfaction. or about one-third of its actual strength, were engaged either in mil itary duties which directly prepared them for remunerative positions in civil life, or were attending specialist schools which would add materially to their earning power should they become detached from the service. o Carloads of pulchritude are speed ing to Atlantic City to participate in the Miss America beauty contest, and all eyes are glancing toward At lantic City. The kids were throwing snowballs up in Calgary, Tuesday. In Athena soda fountains were phizzing and frigidaires were frigiding. Merely a matter of difference in climate. What the governor of North Car olina said to the governor of South Carolina is history now. Making It for Him "What's Helen doing?" "Making a shrimp salad." "I didn't know we had any shrimp In the house." "We haven't, but there's one going to call on her this evening."
