Carl Johnson started the season's harvesting operations yesterday in one of Alex Johnson's fields, north of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton and daughter Jewel and Mrs. Gray motored to Milton Sunday for church services. Dr. Horace Belknap, whose family is visiting at the Ferguson Home here, has returned to his home at Nampa, Idaho, after a brief trip to Portland. Miss Hilda Dickenson was a week end guest in Walla Walla at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece. Mrs. Dora Sanchez and son Leo spent several days this week in Mil ton visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel. A. L. Swaggart is here from his home at Portland, to superintend the harvesting of his wheat crop on the ranch north of Athena. Mr. Ferguson took a short cut going by the Toll Gate road over the mountains. The Swandt-Johns machine has been harvesting the Swank field southwest of Athena this week, and a good yield is reported. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Martin and son Lawrence will arrive Saturday by motor from Los Angeles and will visit at the H. I. Watts home. The party is touring the northwest. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Watts are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Martin and children spent Sunday and Monday at Cold Springs. They report a num ber of Athena people were at the Springs. They were fortunate in se curing several quarts of huckleber- ries. David Carl Beckman, storekeeper at Holdman, died at St. Anthony'3 hospital in Pendleton, Monday night. He was a native of Minnesota, and came to Umatilla county three years ago. He is survived by his wife and one child. Mrs. Lewis Stewart has taken her little son "Jack" to Portland as it is feared that a mastoid operation will be necessary. The child suffered an attack of septic sore throat about six weeks ago and has never fully recovered. Harold Barnett had presence of mind to throw a belt from a pully on his combine harvester, as he. was be ing drawn into the machine afte: his clothing had caught in the belt, at his ranch near Adams.
