Mrs. Wilbur Yokum was in Athe na from her home in Walla Walla last Thursday. Mrs. Bert Ramsey left Monday morning for Portland, where she will visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Booher are here from Condon, to spend the week' end with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. John F. Thompson were in Athena Tuesday, from their home on the Umatilla river. Roland Kretzer and Beryl Hodgen are home from University of Ore gon on a week-end vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Beckner were in Athena Wednesday and Thursday of last week from their home at lone. A large crowd was in evidence at Bingham Springs Sunday, a good many of which comprised Athena people. Leo Sanchez and Jack Miller, re turned to Athena Sunday, after vis iting at the home of relatives in Mil ton over the week end. Mrs. E. M. Bollinger who him been quite ill at the home of her daugh ter Mrs. Ed Davidson of Freevvater, is able to be out again. Mr. and Mrs. George Brace will conduct a new store and service sta tion at Thorn Hollow. Mr .Brace was formerly in the forest service. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece drove over from their home near Walla Walla, Monday, and spent the day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sims Dick enson. Mrs. G. R. Gerking was hostess to the Christian missionary society Wednesday, assisted by Mrs. Julia Hodgen. The program was given by Division No. 1. Mrs. L. H. Rodgers of Spokane and Mrs. Akins of State Line spent last Thursday visiting at the homes of Mrs. Lilla Kirk and Mr. arl Mrs. Bert Logdson. Mrs. M. M. Johns was a guest yes terday of Mrs. Joseph N. Mr. and Mrs. George Lemon, Mrs. T. A. Stott and Mr. John Pugh of Harrison, Idaho and Mrs. Rex Davis of Spokane, were guests Tuesday evening at the E. 0. Lee home. The party were en route to McMinnville, Oregon. Mrs. Mollie Thomas of Spokane is visiting at the home of Mr. iind Mrs. Bert Taylor. Mrs. Thomas is a sis ter of Mrs. Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Thomas who brought Mrs. Thomas here, have left after spend ing a day here. The 0. 1). 0. Club will meet next Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton. The meeting has been changed to Mrs. Pinkertons from the home of Mrs. Virgil Zerba, where it was to have been held. The last meeting of the club was given at the country home of Mrs. Roy Can non and refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. For est Zerba. Many people from other towns in the county have been augmenting the large crowds which have been hear ing Evangelist Hutton ajid his sing er, Mr. Fairbanks, at the Christian church. The meetings are scheduled to continue indefinitely. Beginning tomorrow night, Athe- na-Weston Legion Post will resume giving their Saturday night dances, the Jolly Joy-Makers Orchestra furn ishing the music. Fans will be sup plied to keep everybody cool, and good drinking water facilities will be installed. Water is reported low in the re servdir on account of work on the new pipeline making it impossible to utilize the pumping statioa plant Until the pumping plant can be used it will be necessary to curtail the use of water for lawn sprinkling, tem porarily, at least. "Light of Western Stars," Zane Grey's fine picture that got side tracked from the Standard Theatre, has been secured for showing on Sat urday night, May 29. Remember the date, and be at the theatre early to secure a good seat, as there will be but one showing of the picture. East Oregonian: Mr. and Mrs. Max Dudley of Colfax, Washington, are the parents of a baby girl born this morning, at the home of Mrs. Dudley's parents Mr. and Mrs. Man uel Friedley, 109 Stonewall Jackson. The baby has' been named Olive Genevra after her grandmother. Dolph Thompson is manager of Bingham Springs this year, and is putting forth special effort to please the patrons of that popular resort. Mr. Thompson is assisted by his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Hayes. A big crowd was present at the opening of the season at the Springs, last Sat urday. A party which proved to be a great success was given by Miss Velva Mansfield of Pendleton, at the home of her sister Mrs. Maude Logsdon in honor of Mrs. Ralph Haynie of Bend. The rooms were beautifully decorat ed, wild flowers in profusion being used throughout the spacious rooms. Many interesting games were play ed by the invited guests, about twen ty being present. Delicious refresh ments were served by Mrs. Logsdon and Miss Mansfield, Mrs. D. H. Mans field of Pendleton served the ices nnd Mrs. George Banister poured. At a meeting of the local W. C. T. U. last Friday held at the home of Mrs. Charles Betts south of town, of ficeis were elected for the ensuing year as follows: President, Mrs. Cowan; vice-president, Mrs. Mattie Mitchell; secretary, Mrs. C. L. Mc Fadden and treasurer, Mrs. J T. Ilerr, re-elected. A special meeting is planned for May 14th, which will be held in the basement rooms of the Christian church. The county of ficers will be present and a program of interest to every woman will be given. The Missionary society of the Bap tist church had a most enjoyable and profitable meeting Wednesday after noon at the church. The following program arranged by Mrs. Charles Bctts was: Mission Study, "Peas ant Pioneers" Mrs. Cowan; Vocal so lo, "God touched the Rose" Miss Lorraine Terry; Reading, Miss Jua- nita Woodruff.' Vocal duet, Misses Margaret and Dorothy Lee. A pleas ant social hour followed. Each member was asked to bring an ar ticle valued at twenty-five cents, and these were sold netting a neat sum Ice cream and wafers were served. On Wednesday May 12th the ladies of the Methodist Missionary society are giving a parcel post sale at the church ' at 2:30 o'clock. Each par cel is to have a 25 or 50 cent value. The ladies of the town are cordially invited to come and buy and spend a social afternoon. Ice cream and wafers will be served. Mrs. Rose Miller who has been in Portland for the past two weeks, where she has been' visiting relatives and friends and also helping in the care of her brother-in-law, who now is able to be up, after being serious ly ill with pneumonia, returned home Saturday evening. She was accom panied by Oliver Dawson of Vancou ver, Washington, who spent a couple of days here, returning to his home Monday. Weston Leader: The respective Masonic lodges of Weston and Athe na are planning to hold joint meet ings on May 21 and 22. May 21 the brethren of the two communities will assemble in the Weston lodge room, when two candidates will be orally examined to determine their pro ficiency in the work. Should they pass they will be given the Master Mason degree in Athena May 22. The ceremony will be followed by re freshments. High School Notes t The Baccalaureate services will be held at the Christian church Sunday at 11 o'clock. Reverend Hutton will give the address, his theme being "The Master Life." A musical pro gram, arranged by Mrs. Ralph Mc Ewen and Miss Lorraine Terry will be as follows: Double mixed quartet, "Hark, Hark My Soul" Mrs. David Stone, Miss Jennamae Read, Mrs. Ralph McEw en, Miss Lorraine Terry, Messrs. Fairbanks, Harwood, Eager and Stewart. Mr. Stolsheise, a graduate of Wil lamette University, has been elected as coach for the high school. He has had four years of football at Wil lamette, and also took part in busk- etball and track. Before attending Willamette, he was active in athle tics at Salem high school. Ladies trio, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" Mrs. David Stone, Mrs. Ralph McEwen and Miss Lorraine Terry. The sophomores of the high school will decorate the church. The Junior-Senior banquet was given Jmday evening, April dutn. The party room was decorated in the senior class colors, pink and white, to represent a garden. The table was centered by a large basket of pink roses, surrounded by a wreath of brides roses and ferns. Pink tap ers were used, to light the table and pink nut baskets and place cards were also used to carry out the color scheme. The Junior class wishes to thank the mothers who helped in making this banquet a suc cess. Thursday morning, Envoy L. A Gray gave an interesting talk upon the work of the Salvation Army. The faculty of the high school presented the members of the Senior class with autograph books for the class roll. The 6th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades will go on a picnic to Bingham Springs, Saturday May 8th. They will leave at six o'clock in the morn ing and eat breakfast about half way there. The grade school direc tors are invited as special guests. Miss Bateman, who has recently been elected to fill the position as English teacher here next year, has been pledged to Phi Beta Kappa, honorary fraternity at University of Oregon. Mrs. Whitehead visited the pri mary grades last week. . The Athena High school went on their annual picnic to Bingham Springs Saturday May 1. The sopho mores served breakfast at Meacham creek, the Freshmen and Seniors din ner and the Juniors served supper at Thorn Hollow. The following alum ni were present: Sadie Pambrun, Blanche Johnson, Kohler Betts, Dean Clark, Frank Williams, Herman Geis sel, Lee Banister and Tom Kirk. Special guests were Marion Hansell, Fred Gross Joe Cannon, Fred Rad tke, John Walter and Louie Ringel. The pupils of the third and fourth grades gave a surprise party for Miss Terry last Wednesday. Miss Best was a guest at the party. Athena tennis players motored to Helix Wednesday, April 28 and the following matches were played, He lix taking all except the boys singles: Boys singles, 6-4, 6-2; Boys doubles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5; Girls singles, 6-4, 6-3; Girls doubles, 6-0, 6-3 and mixed doubles 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Athena tennis players met the Pendleton players on the home court Wednesday, May 5th. Only the boys played as a match could not be ar ranged between the girls. The track meet held at Pendleton Saturday, May 1, was attended by a large crowd. There were contestants from the following schools: Milton, Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Umatilla, Ad ams and Athena. Ray Dudley and Arthur Taylor, represented Athena High school. Ray Dudley won the mile run, making it in 5 minutes and 5 seconds, and second place in the half mile. In the grade school meet, George Pittman won first in the 25 yard dash; Roland Wilson in the broad jump; and Eldon Myrick won third in the high jump. The school made a total of 18 points in the meet. Ray Dudley will run the mile in the Eastern Oregon Track meet in Pendleton May 15th. The election of student body offic ers for next year was held in the High school .Tuesday.
