j Press Paragraphs Dalbreth Taylor is employed tt the J. C. Penney company store. Mrs. Charles Smith is in Pendleton visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Jack. Mrs. Arnold Wood and Mrs. Jesse Myrick were in Pendleton on busi ness, Wednesday. Elmer Merritt this week drove a band of sheep from McKay creek to Earrett's Pine creek ranch. George W. Bradley has filed for the nomination of county treasurer at the republican primaries. Dick Winship has returned to Sa lem on account of the illness of his mother, Mrs. William Winship. Mrs. Elmer Stockstill left Sunday evening for Mullen, Idaho, where she will visit with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Hill and lit tle daughter were in Athena Sunday from Prescott, visiting relatives. Miss Helen Eubanks of Walla Wal la spent the week end at the A.L. McEwen ranch, northwest of Athe na. Mrs. Ed Sommmerville of Pendle ton was in Athena Thursday and visited at the home of Mrs. Will Kirk. Mrs. Flint Johns and son Billy, ac companied by Mrs. M. M. Johns, were Walla Walla visitors, Thurs day. Frederick Steiwer, republican can didate for United States Senator, was in town from Pendleton, Wed nesday. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Phillips were here from Pendleton Sunday and spent the day at the home of Ike Phillips. The 0. D. 0. club met at the homo of Mrs. Louis Keen, Wednesday of last week, and a splendid time vas enjoyed by those in attendance. Re freshments were served by the host-J ess, assisted by Mrs. Saulsberry. The next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mrs. Roy Cannon, Wednesday afternoon of next week. Miss Hilda Dickenson spent the week end in Walla Walla with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece. York Dell was over from Walla Walla, Tuesday, and reports no change in the illness of his father, Dr. L. Dell. Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson and daughters of Freewater, spent the week end in Athena, at the Cass Cannon home. Jesse White of Athena, and Mrs. Zula White of La Grande were unit ed in marriage at Walla Walla, Sat urday April 17. The ladies of the local Rebekah lodge will hold a cooked food sale at Rogers & Goodman's store, to morrow afternoon. The population of F. B. Woods' Eastern Oregon Silver Fox. Farm was recently increased by the arriv al of three puppies. Mrs. Sam Haworth returned from Salem Tuesday. She reports that her sister, Mrs. William Winship, is but slightly improved in health. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Goff arrived Monday evening by motor from New berg, and are guests at the home of their daughter Mrs. R. B. McEwen. J. J. Johnson, who recently return ed to his home in Ohio from a visit here, has been stricken with appo plexy, and is in a serious condition. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Stott of Day ton, Washington and Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Lee of Portland spent the week end at the Emmett Lee home. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Ferguson left Monday for Ontario and Nampa, Idaho. Mrs. Ferguson will make an extended visit at the home of her daughter Mrs. Horace Belknap. They returned to their homes, Wednesday with a catch of 175. - Mrs. H. H. Hill visited last week in Prescott, Washington at the home of her son Maurice Hill. Mrs. B. B. Richards, Mrs. Henry Barrett, Mrs. 0. 0. Stephens and Mrs. W. S. Ferguson formed a par ty that motored to Walla Walla, Thursday, where they spent the day. Mrs. Rose Miller left Sunday morning for Portland. She will visit at the home of her sister, Mrs. Orie Jay and assist in the care of Mr, Jay, who is seriously ill with pneu monia. Mrs. Ida Banister and sons motor ed to Milton Sunday, they were ac companied by Mrs. Raymond Geis sel, who returned to her home in Milton, after spending several days iti Athena. Mrs. A. E Swandt of Walla Walla and niece little Miss Louise Whip ple of Dayton have been guests of Mrs. Jack Cunningham since Wed' nesday. They expect to return" to Walla Walla, Sunday. Tom Norman will apply for a pat ent on a garden "slicker" an im plement he has perfected for the erad ication of weeds in his two-acre onion patch. Mr. Norman has for warded a working model to the pat ent office. Mrs. Nellie Taylor who visited Athena friends last week, will move to Walla Walla in the near future to live. Her mother, Mrs. Mary Leep er is in Vale, Malheur county, visit ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Clore. Charles Russell who recently sold his barber shop to Lee Whitehead of Walla Walla, has accepted a per manent position in Grover Com stock's Barber shop in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Russell will make their future home there.' The J. T. club met Wednesday r.f ternoon at the country home of Mrs. William Piper. An enjoyable after noon was spent by all those present and Mrs. Grant Prestbye and Mrs. Arthur Douglas were responsible for the delicious refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. George Banister have returned from California, where they spent the winter months in company with Mr. and Mrs. H. Mc Arthur, who are now at their home in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Banister were accompanied home from Bend, by Mrs. Ralph Haynie and little daughter, who will visit relatives here. Mrs. Fred Kershaw was hostess to the members of the Bridge club last Friday, when she entertained with four tables of bridge. High score was won by Mrs. Ralph McEwen, second prize going to Mrs. Henry Dell and the consolation to Mrs. C. M. Eager. Mrs. B. B. Rich ards assissted the hostess in serving refreshments. Service. Phone 171. Athena, Oregon u High School Notes I Miss Mildred Bateman of the Uni veristy of Oregon has been elected to fill the English position in high school. Miss Mary Jane Cornelison of Whitman College has been elect ed to fill the Latin and sewing posi tion. No one ha3 yet been elected to fill the coaching position, although several are being considered for this place. Last Friday morning the seventh and eighth grades had charge of the assembly. The program was as fol lows: Recitation, "Ain't He Cute?," Roland Wilson; Playlet, "The Asses sor" 7th and 8th grades; "The Tat tle'tale" a newspaper edited by the 7th and 8th grades and read by Lawrence Knight. The pupils of Miss Rodman's room are coloring tassels this week, these are used for ornaments. The county track meet will be held in Pendleton Saturday May 1. Cleora Volwiler, Cecil Clemmons, and Annabel Payne, members of the second grade received 100 per cent in spelling this last month. Saturday, April 24, the Athena High school will present their play, "Three Live Ghosts," at Griswold High school in Helix. Mrs. Pittman visited the 7th and 8th grades last Thursday. The Junior class held a meeting Monday to make arrangements for the Junior-senior banquet which will be held April 30th. The following students in the 3rd and 4th grades received 100 in spel ling for the past month: Daniel Reeder, Richard Burgess, Aaron Douglas, Fern Carsten, Barbara Lee, Kenneth Rogers, Leo Sanchez and Lenore Volwiler. The members of the Senior class, Mr. Hadley, Miss Randall and the play cast motored to Pendleton Fri day afternoon to have their photo graphs taken. The Seniors photo graphs were taken at the Gennell & Robb Studio and the play cast pic tures at the Wheeler Studio. Miss Winona Griffin, of Helix, visited the high school, Friday of last week. The Senior class received their Commencement announcements Tuesday. The Seniors are celebrating SeniorJ Skip day today by going on a picnic to Bingham Springs. The tennis match, which was sched uled with Weston had to be post poned because some of the Weston players have the measles. There were no absences in the third and fourth grade room during the last report month. The Civics class accompanied by Miss Mclntyre attended a session of the county court Wednesday. Helix brought their tennis players to Athena Thursday April 15, and the following sets were played. Leonard Geissel, Athena, boys singles 6-2, 6-2. Dorsey Kretzer and Fred Radtke, Athena, boys doubles 6-8, 6-3, 6-3. Ethel Pittman, Athena, girls singles 6-2, 6-1. Phyllis Dickenson and LaVone Pittman, Athena, girls doubles 6-2, 7-5. Ethel Pittman and Leonard Geis sel, Athena, mixed doubles 6-1, 6-3. The Churches Christian Church Glen W. Hutton and Carrol Fair banks the evangelists, now at the Christian church are proving to be great men. Mr. Hutton delivers clear cut Gospel messages, that are a credit to any man.. Mr. Fairbanks is winning many friends with his jolly, winning personality. His gos pel solos carry with them inspiration. Besides people , from Athena, our crowds are composed of folks from Pendleton, Adams Milton and from other parts of the county. Sunday will be a great day. We expect 130 in the Bible school. Mr Hutton is to deliver a special address to our great men's class. There will be two wonderful services Sunday, with a special musical program Sunday night. We expect a hearty welcome to all. Baptist Church The B. Y. P. U. will dismiss their regular Sunday evening services and conduct services at Adams, at 6:30 Sunday evening. Margaret Lee, lead er and Lucille Smith song leader. The B. Y. P. U. will hold a social at the Baptist church Monday even ing. A fish pond which will contain homemade candies and various ar ticles will be the amusement event of the evening. .
