BILLION DOLLAR ROADS
The biggest economic problem that
confronts the United States today
concerns the building and up-keep of
good roads. It has been thrust upon
them by the marvelous development
of motor-vehicles (automobiles and
motor-trucks) and the prodigious in
crease in the number and use of
these machines throughout the coun
try in recent years. More than four
and a quarter million automobiles
and motor-trucks were produced in
the United States in 1925; their to
tal wholesale value amounted to
about three billion dollars. The re
gistered motor-vehicles in this coun
try last year numbered about twenty
million, which was more than four
times as many as in all the rest of
the world.
We have three million miles of
road, but less than one-sixth of the
total has been "surfaced" with pave
ment, crushed rock or even gravel,
and much of the so-called "surfac
ed" road is unsuitable in structure
or material to withstand the wear
and tear of the motor-vehicle travel
to which it is subjected. We all
know that the unsurfaced, "dirt"
roads, as they are commonly called,
range from fairly good for light tra
vel with favorable weather condi
tions, to abominable, and are well
nigh, if not quite, impassable at cer
tain seasons and in extremely bad
weather. As a natural consequence
of the situation the "good .roads"
movement the ultimate aim of which
is to have all public roods made suit
able for motor-vehicle travel, has re
ceived a tremendous impetus, and
what has been accomplished in road
improvement during the past few
years is highly creditable and even
astonishing in view of the cost and
effort involved. Nevertheless there
is persistent and growing popular
clamor for speeding up the work.
Therefore we are not surprised to
learn that, based on recent surveys
and estimates, it has been predicted
that one and a quarter billion dol
lars will be expended in 1926 for im
proved road construction in the Uni
ted States. A part of this will be
contributed by the Federal Govern
ment as its share of the cost of ex
tending the National highways. Hut
by far the greater part of this huge
sum will be supplied by the States
and their civic subdivisions, and ex
pended for the construction, exten
sion and improvement of State and
county roads.

A RICH NATION
The Department of Commerce esti
mates that the wealth of the United
States at around $;ir0,0i)0,000,00(),
waking it the richest nation on
earth. If this country is to con
tinue as the world's leading nation,
agriculture must be stabilized, says
the State Market Agent. "Indus
trialism is going ahead at record
breaking pace, while agriculture is
slipping back, and it seems to me
that the country cannot long have
general prosperity with two stand
ards." Commenting on this situa
tion the National Farm News of
Washington. I). C. says: "Either the
farmer must make a profit out of
his toil or he must stop farming,
ond when the day arrives for ceses
sion, that hour will mark the de
struction of all other nativities and
the downfall of stable government."
The Press feels oblidced to apolo
gize for its cartoon seivii e during
the past few weeks. Truth of the
matter is that Netter has been back
Fast where he either fell ia with
weather conditions or fell asleep in
cold storage. Anyway, his weather
cartoons have not fit in with our cli
matic conditions, to say the hast.

"Saving Is the Difference
Between Success and Failure"
President Coolidge has said that "Every one
knows that it is not what is earned but what is sav
ed which measures the difference between suc
cess and failure."
The saving of money is inborn with some people.
They make every dollar perform its fullest duty.
Others acquire the. ability to save money and it be
comes a habit with them.
Buying inferior goods because they are cheap is
not thrift. It is wasteful because the service is cor
respondingly short.
The way to decide "where savings are greatest"
is first to look into the ability of the store to buy
right; then the reputation of the store for selling
