ROGERS & GOODMAN (A Mercantile Trust,) ATHENA, OREGON "THE RESURRECTION STORY" PRESENTATION SUNDAY NIGHT Music in keeping with the East er season will be in evidence at the Christian church Sunday night at eight o'clock when a community chorus of about' forty voices will present "The Resurrection Story" by Carrie B. Adams. The chorus will be accompanied by Fred Kershaw and Lawrence Pinker ton, violins and Mrs. Max Hopper at the piano. Rehearsals for the cantata have been in order for several weeks past and a real treat is in store for those who attend. ' Evening services at the several churches of Athena will be dispensed with in order that members may en joy the music. A PROGRAM WORTHY OF PUBLIC PRESENTATION A program worthy of public pre sentation was given, by the Etude club Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Arthur Douglas on Fifth street. Chinese music was the theme and the setting was distinctly oriental with light from beautiful Chinese lanterns and the walls decorated with Chinese mats;- and ineense burners placed " promiscuously about the rooms. ' Those having the arrangements in charge, Miss Lorraine Terry, Mi33 Dorothy Rodman, Miss Eva Randall were in Chinese costume and the program was announced by the beat ing of a cymbal and in Pigeon En glish. EASTER MORNING SERVICES AT THE CHRISTIAN DHURGH Extensive preparations are being made for Easter services at the Christian church, at which there will be special music for the occasion. The Christian church choir, under direction of Mrs. D. T. Stone will render several numbers on the Easter program, beginning at eleven o'clock, with the following accompanists; Miss Lois Johnson at the piano. Bradbury Benediction EXERCISES FOR EASTER AT THE BAPTIST CHURCH MAY NOT GET BEER Thirsty Oregonians probably will not be able to quaff the new medical beer even though it may be sold un der federal regulations. This opin ion was advanced by Deputy District Attorney Leon H. Berhman. He said the Oregon law prohibits the sale of any beverage containing more than one half of one per cent of al cohol and if the new beer can be used as a beverage it cannot be sold in this state. ENTERTAINS BRIDGE CLUB Members of the Bridge club were honored, Friday at a buffet luncheon, at the home of Mrs. R. B. McEwen. The table was centered with spring flowers and a St Patrick's motif was carried out In the color scheme. Three tables of bridge were in play high score being made by Mrs. II. I Watts, second, Mrs. W. Prescott made five runs off York in the third when Harden went in and slowed up the Washington sluggers. McPherrin caught for Weston, and Herman Geissel held down third base. Weston plays at Hermiston, Sunday. Harold Dimmick, for two years coach and athletic director at Mc Laughlin has signed a contract to coach at Walla Walla. Sabin Rich leaves Walla Walla for California. 22 Years Ago April 5, 1904 Ora Rhodes left yesterday for his homestead, and will be absent from his place in the Fair store for the period of a month. His duties there will be attended by Mr. Otto Cannon, a former popular Fair clerk. Mr, and Mrs. James Haworth accompany Ora to his ranch. He orders the Press sent to Madras, Crook county, for the present. Bids were opened Saturday after noon for the construction of the new bank building at the corner of Main and Fourth street. Ed Barrett was the successful bidder, and when com pleted the building will cost about $5,000. The front will be of pressed brick and a cement walk will be put in. The first load of brick was haul ed yesterday m from Weston by Joe Banister. The little ' son' of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brotherton, ' who was scalded by falling in hot:water last week, is getting along nicety, and will doubt less recover without serious conse- suences resulting from the burn. Dan Mays' force of workmen com menced laying the concrete founda tion for J. E. Froome's new brick building yesterday. Knotts' force came over from Walla Walla and has commenced on the Stahl building. New ads today Booher's "Star" saloon, Athena; Troy Laundry, Wal la Walla; A. Miss Saunders may accept a spring term on Birch creek. Charles Booher is running the en gine that furnishes power for the rock crusher. W. J. Wilkinson has a number of men excavating and shov eling rock. The new elevator at tachment recently put on the crush er does good work. Born, April 1, 1904, to Mr. and Mrs. James Bell, a son. Born, April 2, 1904, to Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Stone, a son. Chicken-pox has made its appear ance in Athena, two cases of small victims being reported. Miss Luella Craigen spent Satur day on her homestead near Pendle ton, where she reports the wheat growing finely. April 8. 1904 A strictly amateur batd ball team has been organized in Athena, and the first game of, the. season, will probably be played on the Athena ground Sunday. The line up follows: Frank Walsh, captain, pitcher; Clar ence La Brache, catcher; George My- rick, 1st base; Henry La Brashe. pit cher and 2nd base; Denver Charlton, 3rd base; Clarence Burden, s. s.; Frank Sanders, c. f.; Carl Stumpf, 1. f.; Ross Maloney, r. f. Monday, while plowing, Sim Kil- gore's team became unmanageable. Six horses tangled up but did not get away, Kilgore stopping them by sending the plow deep in the soil. One horse was badly cut and Sim was bruised up considerably. The force of men at the quarry have made good progress in excava tion and the big crusher is now fur nishing rock with regularity to the wagons used in transporting it to the streets. At first gome trouble was experienced on account of wet dirt, which caused the jaws of the crusher to fill up. Carpenters commenced work yes terday morning on the new 50x120 foot building for the Athena Lum ber Company. Jerry Swart, who has been opera tor at the O. R. & N. station in Athena, will leave shortly for Bolles Junction, where he will act as agent for the company. '" Abie Jones is assisting his father temporarily on the express wagon.
