I Press Paragraphs Bob Proudfit has returned to Athena, from a visit to Spokane. F. L. Lucas, wull known Weston resident, was in Athena Wednesday. High school seniors enjoyed a wein er roast at Weston dam, last even ing. Mrs. Gerald Kilgore and Mrs. Mary McKay motored to Tendleton Tues day. Mrs. S. S. Hutt was over from Walla Walla this week, visiting friends. Jim Haworth and Fred Bnddeiey motored to Walla Walla, Monday evening. Beryl llodgen is home from Uni versity of Oregon, to remain over the Easter vacation term. Dean Pinkerton, Miss Hilda Dick enson and Miss Lois Mclntyre, were in Pendleton, Tuesday. Charles Williams visited his daughter Ruth, who is in a hosoital in Walla Walla, Monday. Hamp Booher is driving n new Studebaker sedan and Cass Cannon is owner of a Nash coach. Mrs. II. J. Cunningham and daugh ters spent Tuesday in Walla Walla, at the home of Mrs. A. II. Schwandt. Henry Attabery and family of Weiscr, Idaho visited his sister Mrs. George Myrick a few days this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ennis Aldrich of Mabton, Washington, spent Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur I Douglas. Mrs. Cora Geary who has beer: nursing in Athena for some time, has gone to Forest Grove to reside permanently. Mrs. Grace Kerly of Helix, and Mrs. George Tittsworth of Midvale, Idaho, visited at the David Stone home, Sunday. Mrs. Charles Russell and daughter Charlotte spent Sunday in Milton at the home of relatives, returning home Monday. Mrs. II. H. Hill returned to Athe na Wednesday, after visiting at the Otis Whiteman home in Walla Wal lu since Friday. Mrs. D. H. Mansfield of Pendleton spent Satuiday evening and Sunday1 in Athena, visiting her daugnter, Mrs. Bert Logsdon. George Muir of Standard, Alberta arrived in Athena Monday and is visiting at the home of his sister, Mis. Charles Dudley. J. E. Froom was a Milton visitor Tuesday. Mr. Froom purchased some shade trees and will sot them out on Current street. Bud Canary of Los Angeles, hnx been the guest of Henry Koepko this week. Mr. Canary and Mr. Koepko were classmates at Berkeley. Mrs. I. I,, Michener, son Oral and Will Kirk mototod to Walla Walla, Saturday and visited with Mrs. Kirk who if. in St. Mary's hospital. Tlie Baptist ladies' name quilt is' on display in the Mosgrove Build ing. It is rev. oiled that an offer of SffiO has been made for the quilt Miss l.uis Johnson and Miss Lois Mclntyre were in Walla Walla Sat urday. They visited Miss Ruth Wil liams who is in St. Mary's hospital. Dr. Lash, former Athena dentist, accompanied by his mother, spent Wednesday night here. Dr. Lash at present resides in Portland where he is engaged in the life insurance busi ness. Mrs. Forrest Gholson was operated on at Walla Walla one day thii week, and is reported to be getting along as well as could be expected. Mrs. Mima Kirkland who has spent the winter at the home of her sister, Mrs. D. H. Sanders has gone to .Ar lington, where she will visit relatives. Ralph Cannon and babies, Mrs. Mc lntyre and daughter Kathryn wer t to Walla Walla Sunday to see M:s. Cannon who is in St. Mary's hospit al. Dr. L. Dell has been afflicted with kidney trouble for a couple of weeks, and was taken to a hospital at Wal la Walla, Tuesday evening for treat ment. Mrs. John Peebler, of Pendleton, and her sister, Mrs. Allen of Port land, were Athena visitors. Monday. Both ladies were former residents of Athena. John Stanton, who will soon go on his annual sheepshearing trip into Montana, is at Harley Rothrock's place, where he is shewing a small band of sheep. Miss Ellen Henry who is attending Willamette University at Salem, is spending the Easter vacation at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry. Mrs. Minnie Willaby has received word from her son Clyde Willaby, vho resides at Condon, that his farm home, north of there was destroyed by fire last week. Mrs. David Stone finds time to care tor ouu Khode Island Red and 400 White Leghorne chicks, in addi tion to other duties at her farm home, west of Athena. Miss Ruth Williams who was op erated on in a Walla Walla hospital several weeks ago, has sufficiently recovered to be allowed to return to her home in Athena, Saturday or Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Huggins spent Tuesday in Pendleton, with relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Huggins expect to leave soon for Parkdale, where they will be employed during the sum mer months. ! Mrs. Oliver Woodley and daugh- ieis of Genessee, Idaho, arrived in Athena Wednesday and are visiting at the home of Mrs. Floyd Pinker ton. Mrs. Woodley and Mrs. Pink erton are sisters. The first tree to bloom this spring in Athena, was an apricot tree back of II. II. Hill's jewelry store. It was loaded with bloom and unless frost should interfere, should yield a good erop of apricots. ' Mr. and Mrs. Robert Collins of Walla Walla, were week-end guests at the A. L. McEwen home, north west of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Col lins, recently married, will reside on a farm near Walla Walla. Mrs. Delia Greenwood of North Powder, mother of Mrs. Arnold Wood, is here and is staying at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Green wood has been seriously ill, and on ly Saturday left the hospital. Mrs. A. E. Shick and- Mrs. Gerald members present. After business a social hour was greatly enjoyed. Re freshments were served by Miss Velma Schubert and Miss Ethel Geis sel. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Swaggart were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Char les Norris, Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Swaggart are en route to their home in Portland, after spending a few days in Athena, at their farm home. Rogers & Goodman, who are clos ing a very successful sales season on plows, are expecting the arrival of two of the famous McCormick-Deer-ing Harvester-Threshers, with which they will open their harvester sell ing campaign. Mrs. H. H. DeHart, for the past three years employed as deputy to iler husband, H. H. DeHart, cour.ty treasurer, has filed as a candidate for the nomination as county treasurer at the May primaries. Mrs. DeHart is a republican. . Dr. J. C. Smith, former Pendleton practictioner was in Athena from Portland, Tuesday. Dr. Smith is chairman of the Democratic state central committee and informed the Press that considerable political ac tivity was noticable in Portland. "The Belle of Barcelona" present ed by the members of the musical department of McLaughlin High school at Milton, Thursday evening, was attended by a number of people from Athena. The Etude club gave the operetta here, early in December. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Baker return ed Wednesday from Cottonwood, California, where they visited Mr, Baker's parents. They also made a trip to Los Angeles, and on the homeward trip, motored out to Myr tie Point, where they visited relat- There has just arrived at the Wright feed stable fourteen head of good horses and mules, from 4 to 7 years old, weighing from 1300 to 1700, free from blemish and well broken. Will be sold on a square deal plan at right prices for a quick sale. C. L. McFadden is installing a:i "Eskimo Cave" for the convenience and comfort of his patrons during the ice cream and soda fountain seasonf. The "cave" is located in that part of the store where ica cream and cold drinks were former ly served. Loren Booth former Athena High school student, and who graduated from school here last year, is visiting at the home of his sister, Mrs. Clark Mace, who is teaching in district No. 113. Loren is attending Linfield col lege, and likes it very much. He will return to his studies after Easter vacation. Oil and sand is being used to top coat the new court of the Athena Tennis Club. The combination has been highly recommended to mem bers of the club, as being the best surface obtainable. The Athena court, with its modern equipment will soon be ready for its members to play upon. One of the outstanding social in profusion, carrying out the idea of the Easter time. After a pleasing program delicious refreshments were served to about seventy, and the re mainder of the afternoon was spent in a social time. The little year and a half old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee, residents of Dry Creek, died this morning as the result of eating poisoned pota toes which had been prepared for ex termination of rodents. The mother was formerly Ada Banister, of Athe na. Raymond Banister and Miss Amy O'Harra, well known young people of Weston, have obtained a marriage license. Mrs., A. J. Wagner will leave in the morning for Portland, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Ervin. George Finch, cleaner and presser, has adopted the cleaner's naphtha method of cleaning clothes. The pro cess leaves clothing absolutely odor less after the cleaning process. The local cleaning and pressing establish ment is now prepared to do first class work promptly, and there is no need to send this character of work out of town. Cleve Stanton accompanied by his niece Francis Rainville arrived home Sunday from Prineville, where they took Mrs. S. C. Stanton, who will visit her son, Will Stanton. Mrs. Stanton who has been quite ill, was greatly improved when they left. In the first and second grades Genevieve Barrett, Jack Miller and Doris Jenkins received 100 in spell ing. Annabel rayne and Cecil Clem mons received 99. Tuesday March 23, the 3rd and 4th grades gave a birthday party for Fern Carstens. Miss Best and Miss Terry assisted. Thursday afternoon, , Mr. Robb of Pendleton took a picture of 'the school house. It will be used in the school paper which is put out at the end of each year. Beryl Hodgcn, a student at Univer sity of Oregon, visited High school last Friday, March 19. Genevieve Rogers a member of the second year typing class recently re ceived a certificate and bronze pin from the Underwood Typing Com pany for writing 45 net words per minute for . 15 minutes. Loren Booth, a member of last year's graduating class visited school Monday. Loren is attending Linfield College and reports that he is an honor student. Monday morning, Melvin Coppock gave a report on the Eastern Oregon Typing Contest wihch was held in Pendleton March 20. William Coppock has been selected by the Senior Class to give the class oration. The subject chosen for this is "Impossible is Un-American." Lo is Mclntyre and Genevieve Rogers have been appointed to assist him in writing the oration. Now that the sectional declamatory contests are over the grade teachers are classifying the pupils for tne track meet which is to be held the latter part of April. The classifica tion is based on age, height and weight this year instead of just weight as has been the custom in previous years. Mr. Hadley visited schools in and near Milton Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Logan spent the week end at the home of' Mr. Roy Skeen at lone. Miss Rodman and Miss Terry were business visitors in Walla Walla last Saturday. Mr. Miller, Miss Rodman and Miss Terry have signed contracts to teach in the Athena school next year.
