Some play ground balls were re
ceived this week.
Mr. Roy Skeen, former Athena
teacher, visited with Mr. Logan, Sat
urday. Um'atilla County schools will par
ticipate in a Maypole contest on the
morning of May first in Pendleton.
This will be the day that the county
track meet is held. Flags will be
awarded to the schools winning first
and second places in the Maypole
dance. "

High School Notes
The High school students have
started work on the tennis court and
they will soon have it in condition
for play. New wire will be put up
for back stops.
Mr. Robb of Gennell & Robb Studio
at Pendleton, took pictures of all
the athletic teams, classes and teach
ers last week. The proofs were re
ceived Tuesday and the members of
the student body are ordering the
pictures. "
This week the fifth and sixth
grades are enameling vases and de
corating in art work..
Mr. Beattie, a representative of the
University of Oregon, spoke to the
High school students Monday morn
ing. He also talked to Seniors who
are interested in going to college.
Mr Beattie galled on several alumni
before he left town.
. The following men who turned out
last year for track are expected to
turn out again this year: Dalberth
Taylor, ' Granville Cannon, Ray Dud
ley, and Arthur Taylor. Others who
did not turn out last year, but who
expect to turn out this year are:
Dean Pinkerton, Ronald Lieuallen,
Dorsey Kretzer, Norman Mclntyre,
Edwin McEwen and William Camp
bell. The Etude club is using the school
auditorium while practicing Easter
music.
Now that the basketball season is
over, tennis and track are claiming
the attention of the school.
The High school student body has
begun practice on the annual piny
"Three Live Ghosts,'' that is to be
given the latter part of March. The

A well-known lecturer was promised
J20 if he would give a talk at a char
ity affair In a small town. lie. con
sented, and drove in a motor cnir for
twelve miles through a ' heavy rnln
storm to keep his engagement. Though
he had come prepared to speak for
only half an hour he found upon his
arrival that he was expected to occupy
the platform for an hour, which he
did. The hall In which the affair was
held was poorly lighted and drafty and
the lecturer was thankful when he
was finally able to leave the platform.
An envelope was handed him, and in It
he found a $20 bill, together with a
note reading : "If you will give us your
fee God will aid you In your efforts."
New Sea Discovery
In a recent scientific expedition on
the sea there was discovered a gi
gantic tiderace where two great cur
rents meet. The mass of foam caused
by their violent collision extended for
miles, and In this foam great num
bers of whales and porpoises wal
lowed, attracted by the immense sup
ply of food. There were also great
quantities of wreckage, covered with
organisms, and fish of all kinds feed
ing on them. For the first time the
scientists found the eggs of halobates,
the only marine Insect in the world.
The eggs are being hatched In tanks.
Vast numbers of jellyfish colored the
water purple for many square miles.
The expedition caught more than 150
species of fish,
Tons of Sunflowers
Produced in Canada
The Canadian sunflower crop has
grown to enormous proportions, the
plant having been found to form ex
cellent silage- Sunflower yields from
twenty to twenty-five tons per acre, a
great deal more than the average corn
crop, and the extent to which It has
been cultivated in Canada shows how

here last week, died at the prison
hospital as a result of his wounds.

At an early hour Wednesday morn
ing safecrackers made an unsuccess
ful attempt to blow open the safe in
the 0. R. & N. depot. Nitro-glycer-ine
was used. The charge failed to
do its work properly and the intrud
ers were unable to gain access to the
safe. They retired without taking
any thing, of value from the office.
Mr. Harry DuPuy, who successful
ly directed the drama, "Fruits of the
Winecup," is getting up a cast for
the presentation of the society melo
drama, "Henrietta." The play is
to be produced by local talent, and
will be for the benefit of the public
school library.
Keen's barber shop is being equip
ped with an up to date bath room.
Incidentally, Mr. Keen becomes a pa
tron of the city waterworks system
and Marshal Foster is putting in the
pipes today. 1

Mr. and Mrs. A. B. McEwen yes
terday went out to the farm north
west oi town, where tney win pre
pare for spring work. The children
remain in the town residence until
school closes.
A small hail storm, preceded by
an ominous wrack ot parti-colored
clouds coming up from the west and
hurled in jagged masses' across th
ky to the eastward, struck terror to
the hearts of the timid yesterday,
about 4 o'clock.
Miss Bertha Baker attempted to go
to her mountain school Monday, but
encountered snow to such depth that
her driver was compelled to return
to Athena, even after abandoning
the buggy for a sleigh. So the op
ening of the school will be deferred
until a later date.

A. D. Stillman, the chairman of
the democratic county central com
mittee, has issued a call for the com
mittee to meet at the court house in
Pendleton on Wednesday, March 5
at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The
purpose of the meeting will be to fix
the date for the democratic primar
ies and for the , county, convention.
R. E. Stewart, E. H.' Stone, S. il
Parris, R. J. Boddy and Robert Cop
pock, of Athena precinct; are among
those elected as delegates to the
prohibition convention, which will be
held in Portland March 29 and 30.
The proceeds derived from the pro
duction of the drama "Fruits of the
Winecup" amounted to $70. The play
was given at Helix Friday night,
and waf well received by the people
of that place.
Rayner W. Kelsey will speak in
behalf of the proposed local option
law Wednesday evening at the
Christian church, under the auspices
of the prohibition state alliance.
The fireman's ball which take3
place Friday evening promises to be
well attended. The committee hav

N. A. Miller returned yesterday
morning from Portland where he
went to take an examination before
the State Undertaker's Board. There
is now a law in effect requiring un
dertakers in this state to have a li
cense before they can practice in
their profession.
Grandma Swaggart, who has been
up from Pendleton for the past week
visiting with her sons, A. L. Swag
gart and J. M., and their families,
north of town, returned home Sun
day. . T. J. Clark, postofflce inspector,
was in town yesterday. He was the
official guest of Postmaster Githens,
and came over from Walla Walla
expressly to view the remains of the
ex-burglar proof safe, which for
years had done good service, but
which recently fell victim to a se
vere attack of nitro-glycerine.
The new board of aldermen will
take the oath of office tonight, after
which they will enter into the duties
of office for a period of one year. F
O. Rogers and Dr. A. B. Stone are
the two aldermanic neophytes that
are booked to riae tne municipal
goat tonight. The other three mem
bers have been initiated in years
gone by.
