Radtke was in Pendleton on business Tuesday afternoon. Charles Pinkerton of Weston, was in the city, Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beekner of Pilot Rock, were in Athena, Tuesday. Mrs. H. H. Hill is recovering from her recent attack of pneumonia. Mrs. Fred Gross will be hostess this afternoon to the Study club. Mr. Akins of State Line was in Athena for a short while, Tuesday. Frank McDonald of Milton was visiting friends in Athena Saturday. Ed Wood of the Weston Leader force was an Athena visitor, Sun day. Mrs. Flint Johns and Mrs. H. A. Barrett were in Walla Walla, Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Haney were in Walla Walla, Monday of this week. Mrs. Lloyd Michener and Mrs. C. M. Eager Bpent Tuesday in Walla Walla. W. P. Willaby has purchased a new Buick sedan which will arrive this week. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gordon attend ed the funeral of the late Mrs. Dris kell at Weston. A. E. Shick made a trip to Pendle ton Tuesday and drove home a new 1926 model Star coach. A number of Athena people went to Pendleton Tuesday evening to at tend an Old Time dance. Mrs. Charles May is at Baker, where she is attending her mother, who has been seriously ill. Charlotte, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Russell, has been seriously ill this week. Mrs. Ralph McEwen is spending the week with relatives and friends in Portland and at Newberg. A party of Freewater girls drove to Athena one day this week, and visited Miss Genevieve Baker. M. W. Hansell went to Portland Monday, where he went to have a growth removed from his neck. Claude Dickenson who is employed in Skaggs' Grocery store in Waha Walla, was in Athena, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. William Fleenor of Wallowa county, spent Sunday in Athena, at the II. H. Hill home. Miss Merle Best spent the week end at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Best in Pendleton. A big shipment of Universal ranges was received yesterday at the Rogers & Goodman hardware store. Howard Evans, well known orchar dist of the Milton-Freewnter district, was an Athena visitor, Wednesday. O. N. Phillips and Otto Stapleton of the Cole Light & Cookir.g system of Portland, spent yesterday in Athena. "The Dressmaker from Pans" Standard Theatre, Sunday night. Mrs. H. I. Watts and Mrs. M. L. Watts motored to Walla Walla Tuesday, where they spent the day. Mrs. Raymond Geissel is over from her home in Milton and is vis iting at the home of relatives and friends. The pastry sale held at Rogers & Goodman's store Saturday given by the ladies of the Rebekah lodge, net ted $33. Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton has had her sister, Mrs. Alva Blalock and lit tle son, of Bend, visiting her the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Graham of Walla Walla visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. McNair for a short time Sunday. Miss Pearl Ramsey who is taking a course in marcelling at La Grande, spent the week end here at the home of her parents. Mrs. Stewart came over from Mil ton Sunday and is visiting at the Alec Mclntyre home. She will re main indefinitely. Rev. Delbert Loree left Sunday night for Portland, Oregon where he will attend a convention at the First Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. 0. H. Reeder were called to Tacoma, Saturday by the illness of Mr. Reeder's mother, who is in a hospital in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Will Rider of Yak ima, were in Athena over the week end, visiting at the home of Mrs. H. II. Hill, Mr. Rider's mother. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stockstill and Lowell Zerba attended the presenta tion of "Bringing Up Father" in Walla Walla, Tuesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gross and family of Nez Perce, Idaho spent a couple days this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gross. Miss Elizabeth Holwager was ov er from St. Mary's hospital, and spent the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards. Mrs. Nellie Taylor and Mrs. H. O. Worthington were up from Pendle ton Saturday. Mrs. Taylor's moth er, Mrs. Mary Leeper is slowly re covering after an extended illness. F. S. LeGrow is recovering from a minor surgical operation, which took place at Walla Walla, last week, for relief from a slight attack of hernia. The Willamette University Glee club presented a delightful program at the auditorium, Friday evening, and as usual pleased its Athena au dience. Mrs. Dora Sanchez who for the past two months has been visiting rehv tives in Portland, Eugene and other cities, returned to Athena, Saturday evening. The 87th anniversary of the birth of Mrs. I. E. Saling, a well known pioneer woman of Weston, was cele brated by members of the family, last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wright and baby, of Enterprise, have been vis itors at the home of Mrs. John Wright this week. They will return home Sunday. Improvement is reported in the condition of Mrs. L. I. O'Harra and Mrs. Frank Greer of Weston, who are patients at St. Mary's hospital in Walla Walla. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Amos O'Dell of Walla Walla, Monday Feb ruary 1, 1926, a son. Mr. and Mrs. O'Dell formerly lived here, where Mr. O'Dell was engaged in the barber business. Steelhead fisherman are patiently waiting for the Umatilla river to fall and clear up, when they expect to intercept the early run of the festive steelhead. Mrs. Henry Dell has returned home from Marshfield. She was accompan ied home by her daughter, Mrs. Ar mond DeMerritt, who will remain here for some time. Mrs. Clyde Willaby and daughter Dorothy were guests last week of Athena friends, from their home in Condon. Miss Dorothy was in Pen dleton a few days having dental work done. Miss Nola Hill has gone to Fern dale, being called there by the ill ness of Mrs. Charles Downing, her sister. Miss Myrtle Downing who has been working in Portland has been sent for. While cranking 'a Ford, Clarence Gagnon's nose came in contact with the handle, or the handle came in contact with his nose, rather, with the result that his proboscis was slightly fractured. Mrs. S. S. Hutt and daughter Ruth were over from their home in Walla Walla. They visited relatives here and Mrs. Hutt also went to Holdman where she made a short stay. They have returned home. The Jolly Twenty-five club will hold a Hard Times party this eve ning at the home of Mrs. Arthur Douglas, for members and their hus bands. All are requested to come garbed in hard time clothes. Mr. and Mrs. Harve Parkins of Palouse City, Washington, who ar rived in Athena Tuesday and have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Booher, left for their home yester day. They came here from lone. Mrs. Hadley and son Ronald, who have been visiting relatives in Tilla mook and Portland since Christmas, have both been sick with the flu. It is thought that they may be able to come home by the first of next week. "Bob" Flecher's Pendleton Cowboy and Cowgirl orchestra won a beauti ful silver cup recently at Portland, where twelve orchestras competed in a Contest, sponsored by the Orpheum Theatre and the Portland Telegram newspaper. Miss Ruth Williams who has been in training to become a nurse in the Good Samaritan hospital in Portland, has been compelled to give up train ing on account of a recurrence of a physical ailment, and may have to be operated on again. Mrs. Charles Dudley motored to Pendleton Monday, she was accom panied by her sister, Mrs. Mollie Danner, Mrs. John Wright and Mrs. Theo Bush. Mrs. Danner remained in Pendleton where. she will be the guest of Mrs. William Milne. The Jolly Twenty-five met Wed nesday at the home of Mrs. Fred Gross. Plans were made for the party which is to be in the nature of a Hard Times event, at the home of Mrs. Arthur Douglas this evening. Mrs. Arnold Wood and Mrs. Jesse Myrick served refreshments. S. H. Hargett, brother of J. H. He was 69 years of age, and was a farmer of the Holdman district for many years. He is sur vived by his widow, four sons and four daughters. Mr. Hargett waw a member of the United Brethern church. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon. The 0. D. 0. club met last Thurs day at the home of Mrs. Flint Johns, where a St. Valentines party was given. Dancing and cards furnished amusement for the evening, after which refreshments were served by Mrs. Lee Johnson and Mrs. H. J. Cunningham. About 25 people enjoy ed the hospitality of Mrs. Johns. Mrs. Homer I. Watts was hostess to the Bridge club at her home Fri day afternoon, with two tables at Bridge in play. High score was won by Mrs. M. L. Watts, second going to Mrs. Frank Ames, and the Conso lation to Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn. At five o'clock the hostess served delic ious salad, ices and French pastry. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilson will -occupy the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dudley after the first of the month. Mr. and Mrs. Dudley who sold their property to Vic Harris will vacate the first of March. They will remain in Athena until the first of July, after which time they will remove to Goldendale, Washington, where Mr. Dudley will manage the J. C. Penney company store there. BRINGS FATHER HOME Jesse Gordon returned last week from Spokane, and was accompanied home by his father John Gordon. Mr. Gordon is a pioneer of Umatilla county, and formerly farmed fknd Northeast of Weston. He is now in poor health, being afflicted with diabetes. High School Notes The Domestic Art Class has pur chased an ironing board from Rog ers and Goodman's Hardware. After a weeks absence Joyce Rich ardson has returned to school. Mr. Hadley attended a meeting of the sectional directors of the county oratorical work Saturday. This meet ing was held in the -county superin tendent's office. Oratorical selec tions from various schools were class ified and plans were made for the county contest. The High school realized $16.35 as its share of the proceeds from the Glee Club concert. The Junior class made about $17.00 on their candy sale. Ruth Hutt and Elizabeth Holwag er, members of the class of 1925. visited high school last Friday. Mr. Logan attended the Glee Club concert in Pendleton last Saturday evening. Alberta Charlton suffered a sprain ed ankle in the basketball game with Weston last Thursday. Mr. Daniel Schrieber, a member of the Glee Club, was Mr. Logan's guest Monday. " Mrs. Volweiler visited the Primary and the Third and Fourth grade rooms Wednesday afternoon. A fire drill was held at the school Tuesday, February 8, and the school house was emptied in 30 seconds as usual. Miss Blanche Johnson visited high school last week. Immediately following the basket ball game with Adams Tuesday, February 9, refreshments were serv ed to the students to both high schools in the Domestic Science room. During the warm weather, Mr. Pinkerton has saved the district several dollars worth of coal by us ing screenings which have, accumu lated for two or three years. The grades will have their Valen tine boxes thi3 afternoon. Athena High school basket ball team defeated Weston High school team at Weston, Thursday, Febru ary 4. The boys score being 9-7 and the girls 27-8. The Churches M. E. Church Sunday school will be at 10:00 rt. m.
