McEwen made a business trip to Milton Wednesday afternoon. Joe Scott of Pendleton was at his ranch Monday preparing for spring work. Mrs. CM. Eager and Mrs. R. B. McEwen were Walla Walla visitors Tuesday. 0. 0. Stephens has been drawn for jury duty in the circuit court at Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Watts spent Sunday in Pendleton where they vis ited friends. Mrs. A. L. McEwen and Miss "Jer ry" Cassatt spent the week end in Walla Walla. John Walter is in Walla Walla this week, where his mother, Mrs. Clark Walter, is ill. Mrs. Lloyd Michener has opened Marcelling appartments at her home on Jefferson street. Attorney Watts is counsel in sev eral cases in the present term of the circuit court at Pendleton. Mrs. B. B. Richards has been con fined to her home for several days with a severe case of influenza. Will Kirk reports seeing a .flock of twenty meadow larks, while com ing in from the ranch yesterday. A number of Athena people at tended the funeral of the late Matt Mosgrove in Walla Walla Tuesday. The Carter Brothers of Uniapiiio were here Wednesday, when they purchased a small bunch of sheep. Mrs. Victor Hirsch and Mrs. Jus tin Harwood motored to Walla Wal la Wednesday, where they spent the day. Mrs. H. Goodwin accompanied Mrs. Lillian Fredericks from Weston Mon day, and was a visitor at French class. Glen Dudley had his tonsil re moved in an operation performed at St. Anthony hospital, Pendleton, this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McSherry of Tncoma are in the city, visiting at the home of Dr. and Mrs. S. F. Sharp. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zurba, January 14, 1926 a son. The young man has been named Ela wayne Forrest. DR. Bowles returned from Walla Wal la Sunday night after spending sev eral days visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Orel McPherrin, were here Tuesday from their home in Heppner, coming to Athena to at tend the funeral of Mr. McPherrin's mother. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Wilson of Lewiston, Idaho, announce the arriv al on January 12, 1926, of a son. The youngster has been given the name of Peter Kehl. Weston Leader: Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Van Winkle are now occupy ing their own home in Portland, where they have purchased a $5000 modern bungalow. The Pendleton water commission has decided to construct a new re servoir for the storage of water," in the north part of the city, at an es timated cost of $35,000. Miss Lela Schubert was over from Freewater, where she is employed in the , Peacock flour mill, and spent Saturday and Sunday with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ameil Schubert. Tonight Athena High school bask et ball team plays Walla Walla High on the local floor. Tomorrow nigh, the Athena boys and girls' teams go to Umapine, where a double header will be played. Mrs. A. J. Wagner who has been visiting at the home of her daughter Mrs. Raymond at Colfax, Washing ton, has returned to Athena. She is at the home of her son Ace Wagner, who is quite ill. The people of the Christian church will have a new minister, the rever end Mr. Hackett, who with his wife will arrive this week from Eugene to assume the pastorate of the church in Athena. The Weston Leader reports that Raymond Banister has returned from Corvallis, where he has been attending O. A. C. '"Banty" has enrolled at Whitman college because it is nearer home. Mrs. Bern Banister and Mrs. Jesse Myrick were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel in Milton, Sunday. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Geissel who spent the fore part of the week in Athena. The Pendleton Music House of Pendleton broadcasted a program from KOWW at Walla Walla Mon day night, Miss Velva Mansfield formerly of Athena but now of Pen dleton appeared on the program Richard Wright of Big Timber, Montana, and Clarence Wright of Rainier, Oregon, are in Athena, hav ing been called here by the death of their father, John F. Wright, who died at his home in this city, Tues day evening. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Sanders re cently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary at their home in the south part of town. On January 9th they entertained at a fine dinner Mrs. Charlton and their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Charlton, all of LaGrande; Mr. and Mrs. Starr Charlton and daughters, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sanders, and Mrs. Mina Kirkland. -"Are Parents People!" Standard Theatre, Sunday night. Mrs. Clark Mace is teaching school in District No. 113. She is taking the place of Mrs. Kindal who re signed. Mr. Mace was over from Grandview, Saturday and Sunday and visited his wife. Mrs. Mace will finish teaching this term. Friends of Mrs. Lela Gordon Sat ing who were "listening in" Satur day evening heard several of her songs broadcasted in the KGO pro gram from San Francisco. Mrs. Sal ing will be heard tonight over KTAB, a new station at San Francisco. J. W. Smith was over from H8' lix Tuesday, meeting old time Athe na friends. "Jess" is no older than he looks, and as usual takes much interest in athletic sports, from the side-lines. Just now he is keeping tab on the record of the Red Devils, and the development of the Griswold high school basket ball teams. John C. Baker went to Walla Wal la Tuesday and was accompanied home by his son, Harry Baker who recently arrived there from the cast, where he has been working having followed the harvest back, lie has been through many of the eastern states and while in Minneapolis, he visited his sister, Mss Faye Baker. The Willamette University Men's Glee club will appear in Athena, at High school auditorium ' on the even ing of February 6th. This is the clubs annual visit to Athena. The program includes classical, popular and college songs, stunts, readings, impersonations, etc. The last act of Rev. J. M. Cornel ison at the Umatilla Indian Mission, after a service there of 27 years, be fore going to St. Louis to take up his work as the secretary of the Presbyterian board of missions, was to unite in marriage Joseph Hart and Minie Totus, Indians. Miss Mildred Stanton has accept ed a position at the Eastern Oregon State hospital at Pendleton. Miss Stanton will be assistant to Dr. Pla in ond on, who formerly practiced medicine in Athena, but who hti3 been on the hospital medical staff for a number of years. The gymnasium at Adams will be dedicated tonight with a basket ball game between Adams and McLaugh lin High school teams. The Adams community are proud of their new modern gymnasium, which is of reg ulation dimensions and will be fully equipped in the near future. The following primary pupils, who have been out of school for some time on account of illness, are back in school: Michael Pierce, Jean Saunders, Dale MacClean and Wal ter Banister. The Eighth grade basketball team played a game with Pendleton Fri day, January 15, and were defeated by a score of 25-5. Mr. Miller, the coach, states the reason for the de feat was stage fright. The team will play at Adams Friday, January, 22. Myrtle Compbell is absent from school on account of illness. The recent alteration cf the heat ing system enables the janito to keep the Primary room heated in the coldest weather. The third and fourth grade room has charge of the assembly Friday today. The following program will be given: song in costume. "Grown Up Land" by five girls; nursery rhyme, "When I was a little boy" by Richard Burgess; musical reading, "Little Orphant Annie" by Barbara Lee "Hail, Hail the Gangs all here" the boys. Miss Hall, the county librarian, will speak before the high school assembly soon. County ' school superintendent, J, A. Yeager,, was a business visitor last Monday. . : George Gross and Clifford Wood are now on the eligible list for athletics and will make some of the boys who are now on the team hump for their positions. The principals of the county will meet with the county school super intendent Saturday to discuss the county track meet. AIR MAIL ROUTE WILL SAVE 21 HOURS TIME Twenty-one hours will be clipped from the schedule of mail going from Pasco to New York by the new air route when that service is launched. The beginning of the flights will come about the first of April, according to Walter T. Var ney, to whom the contract was let, says the Walla Walla Union. Mr. Varney plans to make a trial flight from Elko to Pasco some time in the near future to determine the exact time required to make the trip. Mail from this station, destined to be carried by the plane will go from Walla Walla to Pasco by train, there to be . picked up by the east bound, pilot." Mail leaving here dur ing the day or at night will be pick ed up at Pasco the next morning and carried to Elko where connection is made with the transcontinental plane which starts from Los Angeles the same morning. From Elko east the service: is the same accorded air mail from any other city on the west coast. Similarly, about 20 hours is taken off the time required by mail from New York or other eastern cities to reach Walla Walla. The mail is dropped at Elko by the transcontin ental plane 'and is picked up there by Varney's flyers and brought to Pasco. At Pasco it is put on the Walla Walla train. O. A. C. COACH HONORED O. A. C. alumni of Umatilla coun ty will honor Coach Schissler at a dinner, to be given tonight at Pen dleton. The . dinner is in honor of Coach and Mrs. Schissler who are returning from the east, where Schissler attended the recent New York meeting of football coaches. STUBBLEFIELDS FREED The jury in the Stubblefield liquor case, which was so stubbornly fought in the circuit court this week, rend ered a verdict of not guilty, last evening.
