Stanton who has been quite ill with the flu, at her home in the north part of town, is reported improving. Smith, form er residents of Athena and Weston will make their home at The Dal les, where Mr. Smith will engage in the insurance business. Ellsworth McCollough, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chet McCollough, of Tekoa, Washington, is in Athena, visiting at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Harden. Lawrence Pinkerton suffered a sprained ankle at basket ball prac tice last Thursday night. The injur ed member is in a cast and the team is minus one of its best players, pos sibly for the remainder of the sea son. LeGrow and Rich Thompson left for Montana yesterday morning by motor. They expect to be away about a week, and will visit Mr. Le Grow's cattle ranch near Missoula. Quite a number of Athena basket ball enthusiasts motored to Helix Friday evening and witnessed the boys and girls' games between the Athena and Helix high school teams. Friends of John Wright will regret to hear that he is seriously ill at his home in Athena. Richard Wright, his son has arrived from Livingston, Montana to be at his father's bed side. The crew of linemen of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company has just completed repairs on all lines ajacent to Athena, and liave left for Meacham for further opera tions. E. H. Leonard, president of First National Bank of this city left Tues day on a business trip to New York, in interests of the Preston-Shaffer Milling company or which Mr. Leon ard is business manager. J. S. Johns Sr., veteran abstractor of Pendleton was in Athena Wednes day. Mr. Johns is strong in the con viction that the Public Service Com mission should be required to show cause for their continuance in office. Byron Hawks, former Athena druggist, was in town for a short while Thursday evening of last week. He was en route to his home at Bon ner's Ferry, Idaho, from Boise, where he attended a meeting of the Idaho state druggists association. S. E. Cooley salesmanager of the International Harvester company who makes his headquarters at Port land was in Athena Wednesday. He was accompanied by Mr. Black, presi dent of the Yakima Hardware com pany located at Yakima, where he manages a large concern. The 0. D. O. club met at the home of Mrs. Jesse Smith, Tuesday after noon, January 6. An enjoyable af ternoon was spent by those present, and refreshments were served by. the hostess. The club will meet at the home of Mrs. Flint Johns Wednes day afternoon of next week. Tuesday night four candidates were initiated into the local Rebekah lodge. The drill team of Freewater, were invitea over to put on the in itiatory work, which was beautiful and impressive. The new members taken in were, Miss Dorothy Rod man, Miss Charlotte Gross, Miss Ro ma Charlton and Miss Phyllis Dick enson. A delicious supper was spread in the dining room, where after all the business was over those present sat down. About 76 members both of the Athena lodge and the visiting lodge were present, and enjoyed the work of the drill team and the supper. A game is to be played with Endicott at En dicott on Saturday, January 30; one with Hay Thursday January 28 at La Crosse; and one Friday if they can get it. Eight fellows will make the trip taking two cars. Mr. Hadley has been appointed di rector of the Sectional Declamatory contest. It will be held at Adams or Athena. The high school team will journey to Pendleton Friday night, January 15, to play the Buckaroos. Pendle ton has a very good team this year and an exciting game is expected. The examination schedule was as follows: Wednesday P. M., General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Typing I. Thursday A. M., Algebra, Geometry, and Bookkeeping. Thurs day P. M., Latin I, Caeser, Spanish II and H. S. Geography. Friday A. M., U. S. History, and Civics. Fri day P. M., Typing II. Tuesday A. M., Sewing. Miss Margaret Lee visited high school Tuesday morning. The . Senior class meeting last Monday was for the purpose of pur chasing announcement cards. Mr. Wakefield, of Clint' W. Lee Company; took orders. Most of the class or dered one-hundred cards. "The Previous Engagement" was the one act play for one person put on before assembly last Friday, Jan-J uary 8. The predicaments of the bachelor part, taken by Ray Dudley, formed 30 minutes of laughable entertainment. It has been the custom of Athena high school to exempt all students having an average of 90 or over in any subject for the semester work. Those receiving exemptions in all four subjects are' : Edna DeFreece. Belle Anderson, Lois Johnson, and Jessiedeane Dudley. Reverend Laughlin, evangelist of of the Baptist church, gave an in teresting talk on the "Four Great Institutions" Friday, January 8. Mrs. Venable visited the Primary room this week. Friday, January 8, the high school Midgets and Eighth grade basket ball teams tangled. A very exciting game was witnessed. The high school Midgets won with a score of 12-7. An extra quarter was played and the Midgets scored six more points. The game ended with the score 18-7. Vera Miller visited the 8th grade Thursday of last week. Mr. Miller's eighth grade boys are playing Hawthorne school this even ing at Pendleton, and they are also going to play Weston eighth grade at Weston January 22. There are several pupils out of school on account of illness this week. Those out of the Primary room are: Dale MacLean, Dale Gos- ney, Jean baunders, Michael Pierce, Cleora Volweiler and Walter Banis ter; from the third and fourth grade room, Lenore Volweiler and Eloise Venable; James Wilson is absent from the seventh and eighth grade room. Athena high school basket ball teams, both boys and girls, were de feated last Friday night at Helix The girls were defeated by a large score 29-14, and the boys were de feated by one basket, the score 12-10. The heating apparatus of the Athena school is being altered by Fred Pinkerton and Henry Schroed er. A portion of the partition be tween the primary room and the hall hao been removed. When the work is finished a radiator will be inside the primary room as well as outside. Saturday night, January 9, the boys and girls teams of Athena high school met the Wesson high school teams here.' Athena liad a very suc cessful evening, winning both gaires, the boys score being 16-12 and the girls score 30-8. The students body served refreshments to the players on both teams after the game. Mr. Hadley attended the meetings of the Oregon State Teachers' As sociation at Portland during Christ mas vacation, as a delegate for Umatilla County. The high school has postponed their game with Adams until the 19th of this month. Adams promis es that the game may be held in the new gymnasium there, which will be an advantage to both teams.
