Canada is as much interested in
freeing its grains from weed seeds
as is the United States. The Alber
ta Department of Agriculture has
perfected a machine which grain
men declare is the greatest step for
ward yet taken in the control of
weeds on farms and the reduction of
dockage. The machine is attached
to the top of the separator and
cleans the grain of weed seed3 and
small grain before it goes to the
bin or wagon. In a recent demon
stration the machine reduced the
wheat dockage to less than one per
cent from the usual run of from live
to eight per cent. This means the
saving in dockage alone of from
six to fourteen cents per bushel, ac
cording to grade. In addition to this
is the big saving on freight charges
on the dockage, the value of weed
seeds as feed on the farm and the
prevention of weed spreading. The
agricultural department will direct
the marketing of the machine and
make it easy for threshers to purchase.
The average human expects a
sweet and pleasant "Number please"
from the telephone operator on all
occasions so pleasant in fact that
it transmits over the wire, the smile
with which one expects to be greeted
at the central office. This good will
is a policy of the company, and is
almost universally practiced by the
operators, so that the general pub
lic has fallen into the habit of ex
pecting it. Aside from the conven
ience of the telephone, and the ser
vice rendered, it would really be, in
a measure returning some of the
good will received and encouraging
the smiles of at least the manager
of our local office, if customers
would note the statements sent out,
and try to get their checks in on
time. "Service with a smile" should
be rewarded by prompt payment of
the telephone bill anyway.

If the modern American boy goes
wrong, it is because the modern
American home does not hold the at
traction that it should. Idle hands
and idle minds are encouraged by
the parent who "spoils his child."
With definite chores to be done
with a suitable and desirable reward
in store, a boy does not have time
to seek evil companions. With good
books, attractive games, a worktable
and tools and nails, and a little
studying now and then will do fiiuch
to build up mind and body in the
way they should grow.
Perhaps Frank H. Simmonds made
the greatest record as a war corres
pondent, and his sagacity during the
World War won wide attention. He
looks upon the opening of the second
quarter of the century as beginning
a New Era, and says, "The Dawes
plan and the Security Pact of Loc
arno are the two landmarks in the re
storation of Europe to sanity." The
Locarno agreement is not a settle
ment of anything, but it is a sign of
the return to this sanity which is
necessary if we are to have peace.

EVERYDAY "GOOD THINGS
A simple dish which Is both nourish
ing and easy to prepare is :

With Peas. Take
one can of salmon
and one can of
green peas. Pre
pare a white sauce
of two tablespoon
fuls each of butter
and flour, cook un
til 'smooth and add two cupfuls of
milk. Stir the sauce Into the salmon,
add the peas and put Into a buttered
baking dish, cover with buttered
crumbs. Be sure the salmon Is well
seasoned and aad a little lemon Juice
to give zest. Bake, or ' steam until
well heated through. If desired the
white, sauce may be added to the sal
mon and part of it to the peas, the
salmon molded In a loaf and the peas
served poured around It Unmold on
a platter and garnish with parsley.,
Apple Sponge. Pare, core and cook
six tart apples to a pulp. Rub through
a sieve. Mir two tablespoonfuls of
flour and three of cold water, add one
fourth teaspoonful of salt and a cup
ful of boiling water. Add the apple
pulp, one teaspoonful of iemon juice
and sweeten to taste. Beat well, re
move from the heat, add three egg
yolks, well beaten. Fold in the stiffly
beaten whites of the eggs and bake In
a shallow dish until puffed and brown.
Asparagus Omelet. Beat until light
the whites and yolks of three eggs sep
arately. Into the yolks stir three
tablespoonfuls of water, one-fourth of
a teaspoonful of salt and a few dashes
of white pepper. Fold in the whites
of the eggs. Melt a tablespoonful of
fat in an omelet pan and turn in the
mixture. Cook on the top of the stove
until well cooked on the bottom then
finish cooking In the oven. Have ready
a sauce prepared from the liquor of
the asparagus, using half liquor and
half milk, add butter and flour to make
a rather thick sauce, season well, add
the asparagus tips and pour over and
around the omelet when ready to
serve.
