Riding horseback and walking a part of the way, Till Beckner man aged to reach Athena from the ranch Wednesday. The St Nichols hotel will serve Christmas and New Years dinner, as usual. P. Millen is ill with penumonia at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harden. Dr. Kinney of Weston, was over Mon day to attend Mr. Millen. Mrs. W. R. Taylor and mother, Mrs. Leeper, were called to Pendleton Wednesday by the relapse in the con dition of Mrs. George Clore. George Winship left for Baker, Wednesday evening, where he will be connected with the Standard Oil dis tributing station in that city. The stage schedule between Athena and Walla Walla has been annuled during the week, on account of the snow drifts between here and Weston. Miss Hortense Baker, clerk ia the Athena Department Store, is staying in town during the stormy weather, instead of making the daily trip to her home in Weston. Raymond Geissel of the 0. W. depot force in Athena, left for Touchet, Washington, yesterday morning, to relieve the a sent at that station for two or three weeks. : The little son of Mr., and Mrs. Frank Boynton of Pendleton, was buried Saturday. Mrs. Boynton was formerly Florence Jones and was born and raised in Athena. , Thermometers varied in tempera ture registrations Wednesday night in Athena, from two to eight degrees below zero. That it was real cold was verified by the frozen water pipes. James Potts has begun remodeling the residence he recently purchased in Athena from the David Taylor estate. Mr. Potts returned Wednes day from a business visit to Port land. ; The American Legion post, will give a dance at Legion Hall, Athenu, on Saturday evening, December 23. Good music has been secured for the occasion, and a good time is antic ipated. ' Mr. L. J. Foss and daughter, Mrs. Mattie Mitchell of Terrebonne, were in Athena over Sunday, visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Foss. They also visited Miss Alcy Foss and Mrs. Nellie Taggart in Spokane. Mail Carrier Jones has been buck ing snowdrifts this week over most of his route. He is transporting mail with a husky span of mules, hitched to a sleigh, these days. His Ford is resting up. The Junior 8 Club was entertained Friday evening by Maxwell Bilton at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sidney Barnes. Games were the feature of the evening's entertainment. Re freshments were served. Julius A. Levy and wife, of Walla Walla, former residents of Athena are suing George Tillotson and wife, asking a decree inhibiting defendants from mortgaging or transferring land held in Umatilla county. E. M. Smith, Weston banker, and Sim Culley, prominent farmer of that town, were in Athena Wednesday evening. They came to town on a freight train, and in company with Chance Rogers, motored to Pendleton. This is the first picture that Rogers has appeared in with Famous Players, under the Para mount banner, and the fact that he co-stars with Miss Lee is evidence that Paramount recognizes the ability of the Goldwyn actor. Sunday night, Harry Carey comes in 'Man to Man," one of the greatest Western pictures ever filmed. A Bert Ramsey, and daughter, Mrs. Penn Harris, " are visiting relatives in Portland. Mrs. Ramsey, who has been visiting her daughter in the Will amette valley, will return with them. Mrs. George M. Hienen, formerly Caroline Sharp, arrived the first of the week from San Diego, where her husband owns an apartment house. She was called by the critical illness of her father, Dr. S. F. Sharp, in the Pendleton hospital. In all directions out of Athena, country roads are filled with snow drfts more or less. But few teams were driven to town during the fore part of the week, and off the state highway, automobiling is practically out of the question. The Burkhardt concert company appeared at high school auditorium, Monday night, and provided high class entertainment. Inclement weather and impassable roads were responsible for a small audience, but all present were well entertained. " Jay Hurd is in Portland, where he is receiving treatment for ah injured eye. Mr. Hurd, while working in Thompson's garage, recently received a steel splinter in the eyeball. This was removed, but the injury was not relieved, hence further treatment is being made. J. M. Swaggart, former Athena far mer, but a prominent live stock raiser of Baker county, is making a specialty of pure bred single comb Rhode Island Reds, and pedigreed Poland China hogs. "Milt" renews his subscription to the Press for an other year. The Etude club with assistance of other singers will sing carols on Christmas eve. Rehearsel of the club and choir members of the different churches and all others who desire to assist in the carol-singing, will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Proudfit, on next Friday evening. Relatives state that the condition of Dr. S. F. Sharp, veteran physician remains practically unchanged from day to day, with the exception that hemorrhages are not so f requentHow ever, the patient is said to be growing weaker. Mrs. Sharp is at the bed side of her husband the greater por tion of the day. The ladies Aid society of the Christian church have postponed their bazaar and dinner to have been giv en at the church today. Bad weather with impassable country roads have made this necessary, and the sale and dinner will be given early in the new year after the holidays, the date of which will be announced. Mrs. Elizabeth Wilmot, writing from Long Bench, desires the Press to express her thanks and apprecia tion for " the letters of sym pathy she has received from her many Athena friends regarding the death of her husband. She has moved from her former home to Fairveiw Apartments, Room No. 4. Long Beach, The high school play, "Nothing But the Truth," which will be presented at the auditorium on next Friday evening, December 22, is said to be one of the best plays offered by an amateur cast in Athena, for some time. The play is being directed by Miss Morgan, teacher of English in the Athena high school. A cut of the handsome Portland residence of James Potts, which ' he recently sold at a price of $10,500, to enable himself and Mrs. Potts to re turn to Athena to reside, was dis played in last Sunday's Oregonian. Mr. and Mrs. Potts have arrived and will occupy their new home which they purchased of the David Taylor estate, in the southwest part of town.; Earl Coutts, well known Pendleton hunter and sportsman, was drowned in the Umatilla river, Wednesday evening, near Hermiston, when in at tempting to recover -a duck he had shot, the ice broke under his weight. He was alone at the time, and later in the evening, hunting companions dis covered his gun and one duck that he had killed on the river bank. His tracks were followed to the spot where he had broken through the ice. The apron sale and waffle supper given by the Civic Club Wednesday afternoon proved a pronounced suc cess, and the gross receipts amounted to about $70. Over $30 was taken in from the sale of aprons, and many more could have been sold, reported the sales ladies. In the rear of Watts and Rogers store the appetizing waffles drew a hungry crowd, and the lady chefs were kept busy supplying the demand. The ladies are very grateful to those who patronized and assisted in the success of the venture.
