Japan seems to be living up to the
letter of the Washington peace con
ference. While two other signatory
cowers of the conference are standing
in the offing, heckling over the
terms of battleship scrapping, the
Nipponese have dismantled thirteen
of their ships, stopped work on the
building of four others, and dis
charged 12,000 officers and men. She
' has further shown her desire for
peace in the Pacific, and made prac
tical, so far as her part is concerned,
the results of the conference in
greater extent than any other nation
participating. Her fidelity to the
treaty obligations is more con
clusively shown in the reduction of
her army to one-fifth, and the shun
ting of 57,000 of her soldiers into the
private walks of life. Also, she has
returned to China the province of
Shantung, and withdrawn her troops
from there.
Every police department and law
enforcement organization in the
country stands in a position to be
wised up from the standpoint of ef
ficiency as cam pared with that Los
Angeles sleuth machine. Down there,
apparently all a murderer or crim
inal need be endowed with to pull off
his job and get away with it, is nerve;
the undertaking is easy for it has
been demonstrated that the police
organization of the city and county
is impotent to intercept him. If by
accident, he should be captured, he
stands a fair chance of wearing out
the judicial machinery in an endless
process of retrial, in the end gain
ing his liberty by virtue of a "hung"
jury. If by chance, he is convicted
pals saw away prison bars, and bare
footed, he makes his escape and
Mexico swallows another Americano.
In the first of his series of fifty
four letters to appear in American
newspapers, revealing secrets of
State relative to Europeean affairs
brought on by the World War, David
Lloyd George, in part analyizes the
position taken by Clemenceil. The
high spots of his reply to the French
Tiger are, "Clemenceau ought to
have made his complaint in Paris
against men of his own race, and not
in New York against Englishmen . .
. . The pact (guarantee to France
backed by England) lies for the mo
ment in the waste paper basket. But
we never flung it there .... Alas,
Satan is not through with Europe."
That O. A. C. materially helps her
self in lessening the cost of operating
the institution may be cited by the
fact that during the past summer and
fall, the horticultural products de
partment consumed a carlaod of sugar
and 50 cords of wood in preparing
products for its dormitories, frat
entities, and clubs. The surplus was
disposed of to grocers. Eighty-one
tons of fruit were put up by the de
partment, including 10 tons of straw
berries, 12 tons of loganberries, 8
tons 'of blackberries, 7 tons of black
cap raspberries, 5 tons of plums, 15
tons of pears, 4 tons of peaches, 15
tons of apples and 5 tons of prunes.

of the tax problem. Putting it up to
the legislature, after the bulk of tax
ation has been voted by the taxpay
ers upon themselves, may be likened
to asking for pork after the barrel
has been emptied. In the light of
retrenchment, about all the legisla
ture may be expected to accomplish

The Qregonian pretends to see in
President Harding's drive on the ship
subsidy bill, that he has taken hold
of the reins and proposes to do a
little driving himself hereafter. The
Portland paper remarks: "Perhaps

people have shown their resentment,
both of his conduct and of that of the
expiring congress, by giving him a
new team that ho will be far more
prone to balk or run away, break the
harness and kick the wagon to
pieces."
Out of the ashes, Astoria will grow
a bigger and better city. In the cin
ders and embers left by the fire fiend
is written the spirit of her indom
itable citizenry, "down, but not out."

Chicken With
Golden Saoce.
Arrange on a platter the choicest
pieces of chicken (most of the white
neat) In portions suitable for serving,
the chicken having been previously
cooked until tender. Pile boiled rice
around the edge of the platter and
pour over all the following sauce:
Melt four tablespoonfuls of butter
nnd odd the same amount of flour.
Stir until smooth then add slowly one
pint of chicken broth and cook until
smooth and thick. Remove from the
stove and add, stirring rapidly, the
yolks of two eggs "well beaten. Sea
son with salt and pepper and a dash
of cayenne. Sprinkle with a little
chopped sweet red pepper.
Chicken Terrapin. Melt three
tablespoonfuls of butter, add two
tablespoonfuls of flour, pepper; and
salt to taste, a few grains of cayenne
and one cupful of hot milk. Cook In
a double boiler a few minutes until
smooth and thick. Add one and a
hnlf cupfuls of chicken, turkey or
veal, cut In dice, the yolks of two
hard-cooked eggs chopped tine, and
the whites In larger pieces. Cook
three minutes.
Creamed Egga With Asparagus.
Cook until well done six eggs; cut in
halves and place while hot on a hot
platter. Prepare a rich, white sauce,
using four tablespoonfuls of flour and
butter nnd seasoning with one pint of
rich milk ; cook until smooth and thick.
Arrange hot cooked asparagus cut In
short stalks around the eggs and pour
the white sauce over the asparagus.
Garnish with toast points and serve
hot.
Celery cooked In three-Inch stalks
may be served In this dish In place of
the asparagus.
An scolloped dish, using asparagus,
mnenronl or celery with white sauce
baked with a covering of buttered
crumbs, makes a most tasty luncheon
dish.

5 High School Notes
Rev. Huling, who is conducting re
vival meetings at the Baptist Church
this week, gave a very interesting
talk before the high school Wednes
day morning upon the "Value of the
Bible." .
Mr. Vf. O.'Read was a school visitor
last Monday.
The first and second boys' basket
ball teams from Adams played Ath
ena's teams Wednesday afternoon.
They were practice games and
Athena won both games with a score
of 2918 for the first team and 223
for the second team. .
The student body's share of the re
ceipts from the Burkhart Company's
performance, Monday night were $7.

The first of the basket ball games
of the season to, be played on the
Athena floor are scheduled with Helix
for January fifth.
