When in pessimistic mood those
of us who do not own a cars are fond
of pointing out that a good half of
the people's financial woes is due
to lavish spending on automobiles
and the gasoline with which to run
them. Yet there's another phase of
the Question. Cars are a real asset
when used for service, and are like
wise of value in promoting the
enjoyment of the populace. Pursuit
Of pleasure, in moderation, is essen
tial to mankind's well-being, and cars
have afforded us a wonderful advan
tage over all preceding generations.
This temporal blessing is not to be
decried because of its frequent abuse
by speed demons and joy riders.
Rather should a strict curb be put
upon the letter's dangerous activi
ties. However, the citizen who
spends most of his surplus on auto
mobiles should lay the blame where
it properly belongs, and not on the
government, for his slim bank

Having sold to American "invest
ors" for $960,000,000 paper marks
that are now worth only $56,000,000,
Germany has made more out of the
printing business than most country
editors.
The Brooksville Record thinks that
"it is hard to understand a sex that
is too proud to do housework at $15
a week, but will marry and do it
for nothing."
Ten traffic accidents is Portland'
record for one week. Evidently
pedestrians must be kept off the
streets if cars are to be kept off tht
pedestrians.
The prudent Oregon housewife will
insist that her spouse take out a life
t,nd accident insurance policy at the
same time he does his hunting license.
Rockefeller's income is said to be
larger than Henry Ford's. The more
"tin lizzies" that are turned out the
more gasoline it takes to run 'em.
While the "importance" of Satur
day's football game may not set
well with the Pendletonlans, as com
pared with the coming Enterprise
game, the fact that, the Pendleton
team was thoroughly licked by Ath
ena will not be overlooked by con
ference officials in summing up for
the championship at the end of the
season. Let Pendleton pin her esti
mation on population, if she desires;
we'll gauge ours by the number of
games won. . '
. The New Brunswick murder mys
tery is becoming plain to us. We
theorize that the slayer got hold of
and read one of Hall's mushy notes
to Mrs. Mills and was driven to
homicidal mania.
"Our own opinion," says the Bal
timore Sun, "is that the kangaroo is
just one of Nature's abortive efforts
to produce a safe pedestrian."
Sneaking of lucky days, the Ed

on which the United States declined
a mandate for Constantinople.
Must be immoral support the Turk
has been getting from Rassia, since
that is the only kind of which the
bolsheviks are capable.
"A small business that pays is
better than a big one that doesn't,"
is among the Sap and Salt man's
most sapient remarks.
We're simply not going to say
that Hermiston has qualified as the
county's "earthquake center" because
it needs! a shaking up.
England should have reflected
that if on a good many occasions
she hadn't let George do it, it might
never have been done.
It will soon be realized that the
change is in England's government
and not in the pockets of her idle
workingmen.
T.lnvH Georcre has resigned. It
wasn't fair, anyhow, that Wilson,
Clemenceau and Orlando should have
all the luck.
Despite his recent literary efforts,
Bill Hohenzollern will best be re
membered as the author of the World
War.
Disapproval of congress is not
quite unanimous, its record having
been endorsed by President Harding.

None but themselves will regret
that the Wobblies have made at
Portland a striking failure.
