Turner and daughter in town yesterday from Weston. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hill are out of town for a few days on a motor trip. Miss Gwendolyn Mclntyre of Pen dleton, visited friends in Athena, Wednesday. Mrs. C. L. Lowther is expected to arrive home soon, after an extended visit in the valley. Miss Iris Lowther, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Lowther, was recently married, the mother be ing present at the ceremony. Oscar Edwards, brother of Mrs. R. A. Thompson, who has been assist ing at the garage, left Tuesday for the coast, where he will join his par ents on a pleasure trip. Oscar ex pects to get his limit of two deer. Miss Audrey Winship was reported in a critical condition the first of the week at her1 home in Salem, from an attack of appendicitis. Marion Hansell hunted for deer on Blalock Mountain in company with John Ross of Milton, but no chance fpr a shot occurred. -Glenn Dudley, Dean Dudley, Dick WViship, Till and Lee Beckner left Thursday morning for Black Mount ain on a deer hunt. Mrs. Ralnh McEwen and two sons with relatives at Pacific City where they will spend a couple of weeks on the beach. Athena grocery and dry goods stores will close Sundays and even ing at six o'clock, except Saturday evening, until further notice. Corn promises to make an excel lent crop this season in this part of ! the county. A yield of from 30 to 40 bushels per acre is indicated at the present time. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wood returned Tuesday from Lehman Springs, where they spent several weeks. Both are feeling fine as a result of their out ing at the Springs. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas and ren left Saturday on a business trip to Nanton, Alberta. They were accompanied by Mr. Douglas' sister, Miss Ruth Douglas of Pendleton. Miss Chandler, of the Willamette valley, has contracted to teach the school in the Gerking flat district west of town. She is a sister of Miss Altha Chandler of the Athena schools. He will be accompanied by his brother, Dick Winship. Mrs. Edith Van Deusen held a mil linery school Wednesday and Thurs day in the Civic Club rooms. About fifteen ladies were interested in the lessons the first day, and a larger number the second, in making and remodeling fall hats. HMr.and Mrs. Louis Keen left yes terday morning for Cannon Beach for a two weeks vacation. Miss Bertha Jean Murdock, sister of Mrs. Keen, who recently returned from a sum mers visit to Grand Rapids, Mich igan, accompanied them. Dr. Watts reports that Mrs. Flor ence Markly of this place who under went on operation at the hospital in Pendleton last Tuesday for the re moval of tonsils and some nasal ob structions is recovering nicely and will be able to return home soon. It is reported that little ati is being paid to the game c$ sion's order to close Umatilla on killing pheasant and grouse this open season. Froom arrived in Athe na from Alberta Tuesday, to resume the practice of dentistry. Dr. Froom is making arrrangements to open his office in a Main street location. Mrs. Froom and son will arrive here in several weeks from Alberta. She re mained there to place her new some in order before returning to Athena for the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Clothier and Miss Edith Booth left Saturday morn ing by car for Sweetwater, Idaho, where they will visit Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Oinstot. Mr. and Mrs. Clothier will later go to Wenatchee, Wash. Miss Booth will after two weeks time return to Athena where she will teach in one of the country districts during the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. Homer I. Watts, and r. and Mrs. E. A. Leonard of Waits- burg contemplate leaving next week on a hunting trip into British Col umbia. The party will go by auto mobile to Kiethly Creek. Mr. Watts has purchased an Evenrude motor which he will use for motive power on the boat the party will travel in on lake and river. Mr. Watts and Mr. Leonard were in the Keithly Creek district last fall and were suc cessful in hunting moose and cariboo. Word came from the John Day country Wednesday that M. L. Watts had killed a buck, and also that a Ukiah man had bagged one. Mr. Watts went on a hunting trip with Lowell Rogers and Sol Baum of Pen dleton. Mrs. S. F. Sharp has returned home from an extended visit with her daughter, at Tacoma. Bert Warren who farms near Helix, was knocked down and seriously in jured by a runaway team Wednesday. He is being treated for his injuries at the hospital in Pendleton. I The family and friends of Jean P. Kirkpatrick, editor and publisher of the Pilot Rock Record, are worried over his mysterious disappearance, from Walla Walla where he recently took his family to reside. Different theories are advanced for the editor's disappearance. It is said he was heavily in debt on his printing plant, but he had been doing a good busi ness, and is not known to have wor ried over his finances.
