Charles Williams and family re
turned home from the coast Satur
day morning. They reported a very
pleasant trip.
Miss Bessie Price visited her
grandmother, Mrs. Mary E. Price,
who is confined in the Pendleton hos
pital, Sunday.
Mrs. Jack Crigler and daughter,
Mildred were over from Freewater
last Friday and spent the day at
Cass Cannons.
Mr. and Mrs. L, M. Akers came up

Matt Mosgrove, former Athena
merchant, was over Thursday from
his home in Milton. He has recently
closed out the bankrupt stock of the
Weston Mercantile store.

Rothrock, all of Pendleton, visited
Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs.

'cent trips to the mountains report
prospects good for a bountiful huc
kleberry crop, and many anticipate
going later to pick the luscious fruit,
William .Winship of Salem, writes
an Athena friend that he will have a
large crop of prunes and walnuts. It
is dry in the valley at the present
time, gardens being in serious need
of moisture.

Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones have been
enjoying a visit from their daughter,
Mrs. Vernie O'Harra and her little
daughter, Vernita, of Weston.
Mrs. E. J. Burchell and little grand
daughter, Betty Bond of Pendleton,
have been guests the past week at
the C. M. Eager home on Jefferson
street.
Mrs. W. R. Taylor has returned
from a visit with her sister, Mrs. J.
W. Smith at Corvallis. Mrs. Sheldon
Taylor accompanied her as far as
Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Ingram, and
son James, left Wednesday evening
by atuo for a trip to the coast. Mr.
Ingram is a brother of Mrs. Robert
Proudfit.

Mrs. Lillian Dobson and sister-in-law,
Mrs. Amy Dobson Upton of
Estacada, were in Athena and spent
the week-end with friends. Both are
attending the summer normal school
at Pendleton.
Smoke from the burning timber in
the Cascades almost obscures the sun
here. Forest fires are raging up and
down the coast, and unless controlled
in a short time, huge loss of timber
will be the result.
X.arge numbers of tourists are us
ing the city park camping grounds.

A second-hand Willys-Knight car,
the property of Dr. Kennard, was de
stroyed by fire Monday night on the
highway. It was being driven by Ray
McCarroll when the blaze which re
sulted in it being destroyed started.
Mrs. Philip Yenney was over yes
terday from her home near Walla
1 Walla, visiting her mother, Mrs. W.
R. Taylor, and her grandmother, Mrs.
Ann Taylor, who is reported no bit
ter. Athena friends have received an
nouncement through cards, of the
birth of a baby girl, weight 6lbs
on July 18, 1922, to Mr. and Mrs.
Everett Russell, of Zillah, Wash. The
mother was formerly Elizabeth Math
ers, an Athena school girl.
Arnold Wood has finished his
wheat harvest on the R. W. Cargill
ranch one mile south of Athena. He
reports that his yield was 45 bushels
to the acre, and the grain tested 58
pounds to the bushel. This is one
of the best yield yet reported.
Mrs. M. M. Johns returned Tues
day from a week's visit at the home
of her niece, Mrs. George Ayres, at
Wallula. She was met their by her
sister, Mrs. Jacob Proebstel of Port
land, who will be in Athena soon for
a visit at the Johns home west of
town.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cannon and lit
tle son returned from Spokane where
they went to consult Dr. Addison
from Rochester in regard, to the lit
tle one, and it was thought in three
years an operation would be necess
ary before he could walk. They were
accompanied by Mrs. Roy Cannon.
Mrs. Merle Roby and Mrs. Rockwell
Carrey returned Wednesday to their
homes in Eugene and Portland, res
pectively after spending several day3
at the home of their brother, George
Thompson. Mr. Thompson has en
tirely recovered from his illness and
is conducting harvest operations on
his ranch west of Athena.
Sheldon Taylor has made substan
tial improvements to the Taylor
homestead west of town, putting In
a basement and heating plant and
changing the interior of the house,
and with his family will reside there
in the future. Mrs. Taylor and child
ren will be established on the farm
in time for school, while Sheldon will
remain on the Cold Spring ranch un
til he has put in his fall crop.
Vernie Marr and Shed Price, both
men of veracity, came down the
Weston uplands Tuesday with a load
of wood. They say the mountain
surely needs a good road, if any
country ever did, The present grado
down the foothill slopes is so rough
and rocky that it shakes the stays
out of the women's corsets, and they
found them scattered all along the
tortuous way.
