OREGON. JULY 7 1922 GOOD CAUSE FOR ALARM (The Oregonian.) The Oregonian confesses a deep sympathy with the plaint of Mr. W, M. Peterson of Pendleton, voiced i whip is raised. The people want relief from high taxes, not the im position of new and higher tariff taxes. Protected goods going up while wages are going down will not inpsire a feeling of confidnec in future g. o. p. promises. Capper's Weekly remarks that "one mystery of ancient history has been cleared up for us. The reason things went wrong at Babel is be cause Lloyd George wasn't there." He has led many a forlorn j ' hope against a numerous aye, an overwhelming-republican enemy, An inspiring phase of the day s and he has fallen outside the breast-: nws is that those indomitable Irish works more than once-not because j "patriots" were not denied the glor he was Peterson, but because he i 'us privilege of dying in the last nmk n .lnmtofat ulw. un not flfrnirl ; flWCH to show his colors If he cared for political success Perhaps it's Mr. Lasker's idea enough to stultify himself, Mr. Pe- that a home on the rolling deep terson might profess himself an ; should be so convivial that the deep "independent" or a "non-partisan," or even a republican, and register as a republican and become a candi date for something or other. He would find more democrats, inde pendents and non-partisans there than in the democratic primary, and probably he could get away with it. But Mr. Peterson is not that kind cannot monopolize the rolling. Too bad that the golden words bestowed upon ex-service men by President Harding cannot be coined into bonus money. We are not now disposed to be so critical of senatorial procrastination, ! since it has led to holding over the of democrat. He is of the stalwart j ship subsi(,y bi Worth Carolina variety, wnere tney take their democracy seriously. Or at least they did. Mr. Peterson These be dry times, but they'll nrtt nravont thp fnrpwpll dron that was shocked the other day ' re" Qwens and Rathie are promised to- ceive his old home paper disclosing the sad change that has come over the good old party in his good old state. The chairman of the state board of elections speaks up plainly about it. In an address to the public he makes this disclosure: "Generally speaking, so far as I have heard the first primary was held in a satisfactory manner ex cept in one, and in this a most im portant particular, and that is, in many instances republicans were day at Salem. Dc Valera's eventual capture is inevitable, since he is bound to bob up somewhere and make a speech. Trouble with Ford for president js that the White House isn't a flivver factory. Pelican Ate Oolf Ball. A pelican, one of those huge, long- iuTTTi r V" .. beaked marine birds that poise thein permitted to vote in a democratic i ' hun(lre(, feet bove ,he w- primary, mere is mucn umeriiess on this account, especially In two districts. For the life of me, I can not understand why an honest man will do it. It just cannot be done under the law." Well, it is done under the law, here and in North Carolina. Just what is to be done about it, so long as the direct primary is what it is, and some men are what they are, is not exactly clear. In Oregon, it has served to emphasize the menial po sition of the democratic party, and to make the situation in the repub lican party continuously precarious. In North Carolina they are begin ning to be alarmed about the per manency of the dominating position of the democratic party. Well they may be. It matters little whether the courts decide that Hall or Olcott is the legal republican nominee, since the people themselves will undoubt edly decide that Walter Pierce will be the next Oregon governor. ter, close their wings and with benks open dive hend foremost into schools of small fish, finished n golf game In St. Petersburg, Fin., recently "one down." The Coffee Pot course Is along Uie shore of Tampa hey and on the eleventh hole Is a small brackish lake forming a wuter hazard, which must be crossed to reach the green. One member of a foursome drove from the lee and a strong wind car ried the hall Into the lake. A pelican flying lazily above the Inke evidently took the ball bobbing on the surface for a new variety of fish, for he sud denly closed his wings, dropped with terrific speed and gobbled It. It seems to be dawning upon the minds of the railroad shop men that even an unsatisfactory payroll has its attractions when one is in danger of being permanently disat t ached therefrom. The fact that Ue Valern made his escape through the Free State lines disguised as a hearse driver carriesno assurance that he will not later be required to qualify as the corpse. An Illinois fat man lost 81 pounds by a -000 mile hike which included the Mohave desert. The fact that he returned home by train shows that he didn't also lose hit! reason. What Counts. There was a gleam of triumph In the young man's eyes us he gated at the woman he loved. "I'm going to write a great novel that will make me famous," he said. The beautiful girl remained seated and made no reply. "Then I have a scheme to bring pence and happiness to the world," he continued. She still remained seated. "In order to carry out this scheme I needed money," he went on, "so I played the market and won over a million." She Jumped up and fell Into his arms. Call For Warrants.
