JUNE 30 1922 It is seldom that our hard-headed not to say hard-boiled farmers will admit that a college education is of much value on a farm. And yet these remarks from Dean Coffee of the University of Minnesota Agricultural College are worth while for them to mull over: "Where a few years ago agriculture was largely an affair of pioneering, of clearing the land and taming the wilderness, it is now a matter of crop rotation, soil conservation and extended marketing. Men xf high school education on these farms earned about five hundred dollars yearly; those with some college training made about six hundred dollars annually; but those with a complete college training had an average yearly income of more than three thousand dollars." We understand there'll now be a United States of China patterned after the United States of America. Before the Chinese take our con gress as a model, we hasten to warn them that it isn't a model congress. so true, and so often has such a striking application, that it should be reproduced again and again in the public press, that it may be drilled into the consciousness of the people. Trouble with compulsory voting is that voters so "compulsed" would never be of the sort that makes for enlightened citizenship. Does congress expect some other power to "scrap" our navy, in propos ing to grant it nearly three hundred million dollars? We suppose the 120-pound groom who married a 500-pound bride at Bellingham found a happy weigh out of bachelordom. We are not going to be so brutal as to say that the founder of the re publican party died of remorse. For one, we are willing to give Bolshevik Russia credit for not de serving any. Just now we're wondering why I Germany ever wanted a place in the sun. OREGON NEWS NOTES Senator Walsh charges that the new tariff will add nearly four hun dred millions to the nation's annual food bill by its duties on meats alone. "God bless the Grand Old Party!" is one thing the woman voter will never say when she buys a piece of steak. "William Wrigley Jr. made net profits of over four million dollars in gum last year arid says it was all due to advertising. That's something for the non-advertiser to chew awhile," remarks the Eugene Guard. Republican tariff makers will do well to protect the shingle industry, since they are likely to need a roof over their heads to protect themselves from the threatened storm of popular disapproval. Polk county is running true to form in gumming up the state road program. Crabbed old Polk usually supplies the stickers that block the path of progress. Thus saith the Chicago Daily Journal: "All the tambourine playing spooks are doubtless from heaven. The other kind would play a saxaphone." It's too. much for our well known board to expect that it can make as much money in the liquor business as it loses in the shipping business. Cheer up! What some of us here in the United States are die posed to regard as adversity Europe would be glad to share. It would seem superfluous for the Irish rebels to take the offensive, when they are so much that way anyhow. With the king'B reign in Ireland succeeded by a rain of bullets, the dove of peace has sought a safer refuge. As the Aaheville Times sees it. "the price of wheat is down, but they are not saying it with flour." The general upward trend In the lumber business of the Pacific Coast has already resulted In the boosting of the price of box snooks from 13 to 15 cents each. Crater Lake hotel has changed hands. A. L. Parkhurst has sold his Interest In the concession without res ervation, to the Crater Lake National Park company. George A. White, adjutant general of Oregon, was promoted from colonel to brigadier general In the national guard at Camp Lewis, according to advlceB received from camp. Two hundred members of the Knight of Pythias lodges of Central Oregon attended the degree work staged on the top of Pilot Butte in Bend, the first outdoor initiation held lu Central Ore gon. Forty-six work horses were burned to death in the stables of James Lyons, a Portland contractor, 222 Union avenue, Friday night In a blaze that did comparatively little damage otherwise. Alleged failure to enforce prohibi tion laws, and general Inefficiency on the part of Ole Nelson, Bheriff of Clat sop county, are said to be the baslB of petitions asking a special election to recall the sheriff. Tom Chrlstensen, 38, prominent farmer and stockman, was instantly killed at Haines when a hay derrick he was moving came In contact with a high voltage line of the Western Oregon Light & Power company. Otis Patterson has resigned as one of the board of appraisers for Grant county, representing the world war veterans' state aid commission for Oregon. E. B. Moore of John Bay has been recommended as his successor. J. C. Stevens, engineer for the Kla math Drainage district, filed with the state engineer tentative plans by which the district expects to issue bonds In the sum of $20,000 and to de velop approximately 27,000 acres of land.
