Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dudley re turned yesterday from a business trip to Portland, Miss Joyce Johntson is employed temporarily in the dining room of the St. Nichols hotel. A number of Athena people spent a pleasant time Saturday night at a dance at State Line Hall. Mrs. Kirk, Miss Christensen, Miss Gries, and Mrs. DeHaas motored to Pendleton, Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Loren .Basler and Miss Eva Gries were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Eager, Sunday. Chickens Wanted-J. E. Froom of the St. Nichols hotel will pay the highest market price for chickens. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Jack of Pen dleton and children were dinner guests hunday, of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Smith. Mr. Bennett, representing the girls' orphanage at Eupene, in connection with the Bible university, was in the city this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McKintrick of Rtarbuck have arrived in Athena with the intention of residing here. Mr. McKintrick is a carpenter. Miss Irene Ray of Pendleton, was a week-end guest of the Misses Pam brun, at their home south of town. Miss Ray is a teacher at Pilot Rock. F. E. Russell, pastor of the local Christian church, left Monday for Springfield, Mo., where he was called by the critical illness of his mother. yliiss Vernita Watts will arrive to day from Oakland, California where she is a student at Mills College, the vacation period for her school having begun. Mrs. Ethel Pinkerton and her two children, Dorothy and Donald, of Port land, were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pinkerton Sunday and Monday. Mrs. Homer I. Watts and Mrs. M. L. Wliss Mildred Winship is here from Sarem, visiting with relatives and friends. Miss Winship, who is em ployed as telephone operator, is on her two-weeks vacation. Mr. and Mrs. C. 0. Whiteman and children of Walla Walla, and Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards and son were dinner guests Sunday at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Koepke. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dudley and Mr. and Mrs. Emmel have returned from Portland, where Mr. Emmel and Mr. Dudley selected summer and fall merchandise for the J. C. Penney ftore. Prof. Loren Basler of Athena high school will attend summer school at University of Washington. Prof, and Mrs. Basler will leave Athena immediately after the closing of school. Miss Drake was hostess at a slum ber party, given at her home on Mon day evening. Those present were: Misses Mildred Christensen, Francies Williams, Edna Pinkerton, Altha Chandler and Mrs. Hopper. The Sunshine club will be enter tained on May eleventh at the coun try home of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Wood ward, with Mrs. D. T. Stone and Mrs. Bower as hostesses. All members are requested to be present. Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gross, Mrs. Jennie Gross and Mrs. Grant Prestbye went to Walla Walla Monday where they attended the funeral of their kins woman, Mrj. Carpenter, who died there. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Engclman, of lone, Oregon, and three children, were week-end guests at the C. T. Smith home on west Main street. Mr. En gelman is a brother of Mrs. Smith and formerly was well known to Athena people. r William Elam is a new clerk at the Athena Department stored Mr. Elam, who corat-s from Dayton, Wash., was at one time employed by Mr. Radtke, and is no stranger here. With Mrs. Elam, he will reside in the Fisher bungalow. Members of the Athena Commer cial club are requested to be present at a meeting of the club to be held on next Tuesday evening. May 9. Matters of importance will come be fore the club, is the reason for re quested attendance of members. "Pete" Abercrombie, popular sales man at the Athena Department store, will leave toon foe Canada, in com pany with Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Froom. Mr. Abercrombie during his two years stay here has made many friends in Vthena, who wish him well in new '.lelds. Mrs. F. E. Russell is enjoying a visit from her father, M. L. Caskey, who arrived Monday evening from San Diego, California, where he spent the winter and spring. Mr. Caskey, after an indefinite visit here, will go to Denver, Colo, where he owns property. Tuesday, May 16 will be the an nual picnic and park clean-up day for the Athena community, headed by the Civic club. The committee consists of Mrs. Hanry Boll, Mrs. W. P. Littlcjohn, Mrs. J. C Walter and Mrs. Arnold. Wood. Colonel J. S. Winn and Mrs. Winn will arrive tomorrow from Fort Ri ley, Kansas, and will be guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. LeGrow. Mrs. Winn is a sister of Mr. LeGrow. Colonel Winn has been commanding officer at Fort Riley since the war, and is coming west to spend the sum mer. The sixth birthday of Miss Helen Lucille Barrett was the occasion of a happy afternoon, Wednesday, for twenty of her littie friends, at her home. Rain interfered with outdoor games, but the commodious basement, decorated in flowers afforded a splen did substitute. A May-pole dance and crowning of the little hostess as queen, was a special feature. Mrs. Barrett was assisted by Miss Eva Gries, Mrs. R. B. McEwen and Mrs. A. L. McEwen. Mrs. Clarence Tubbs, Mrs. Richard Thompson and Mrs. J. C. Walters were guests. A dainty collation, suitable to the appetite of the little folks, ended a delightful May birthday party. The May meeting of the Christian Missionary society was held Wednes day afternoon at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton. Mr. Bennett, of Eugene, was a visitor, and presented a plea for aid in the construction of a new building for the girls' orphanage, under the Bible Univerity there. The Athena Mis sionary circle voted to endow a room in the new building, and will assume responsibility for its construction. Mrs. Russell led the devotional exer cises and the regular program was dispensed with. The ladies voted to invite the Pendleton society to meet with them in the church basement on June 7th. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Sherman, Mrs. Smith and the hostess. Miss Laura Purcell, teacher in La mar school, has been requested by Superintendent Green to present her pupils in the calesthenic drill so suc cessfully given here last Friday even ing, at the county meet tomorrow in Pendleton. Complimenting their husbands and the cast assisting in the operetta given here last month, the Etude club were hostesses last night at a pleas ant paiiyin the Christian chureh re ception rooms. A musical and liter ary program engaged the first part of the evening, followed by games and refreshments. Born, April 28, to Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Westfall of The Dalles, a daugh ter. Mrs. Westfall was formerly Miss Zena Craft, daughter of Mrs C. T. Smith of this city. Mrs. George Gerking and Mrs. D. B. Hunt are both reported .ill at their homes east of town. High School Notes A large number of rooters accom panied the baseball team of Athena high on their trip to Milton this af ternoon where they played the Mil ton team. Last evening, the Junior class were delightful hosts and hostesses to th'j members of the Senior class and fac ulty at a beautifully appointed ban quet at seven o'clock. The domestic science room was gracefully decorated with bluebirds. Blue and pink candles adorned the table while pink Cecil Brunner roses and blue forget-me-nots were arranged prettily. The favors carried out the same color scheme The six course dinner prepared by the mothers of the Junior class was served by six Freshmen and Soph imore girls. XTVelton Read will go to Pendleton Friday night to compete in the coun ty oratorical contebt to be held in that city. He has won in the sec tional district previous to thiu Lois Johnson and Jennamae Read of the seventh grade have completed reading the required number of books and have received their certificate. The eighth grade pupils had a tveiner roast on Wild Horse Creek Tuesday evening. Miss Gries and Miss Williams chaperoned the party. ( Mr. and Mrs. Hadley, Mr. and Mrs. Basler, Miss Drake, Mrs. Belt and daughter, Emma were dinner guests Saturday evening at the A. R. Cop pock home. At the request of Mr. Green the Clown dance supervised by Miss Christensen and the Sunshine Fairies c'irected by Mrs. Rex Hopper will dance at the county oratorical con tes which will be held in Pendleton tonight. Miss Mildred Winship popular mem ber of the Athena high school alumni visited the school, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Hadley and son were dinner guests at the home of Mix Blanche Drake, Monday. The Seniors chose last Tuesday for their annual picnic and left at 8:30 for the power plant on the Wal la Walla river.
