MAY 5 1922 c!o much better than the republicans, but to a well-grounded conviction that they can hardly do worse. Albert J. Beveridge, the Indiana author and statesman, who was once something of a radical in politics, row exhibits pronounced conservative tendencies. He even condemns the "farm bloc" as a product of the new order that interferes with the ac customed progress of legislation. It is probable that growth in years and experience, and the thoughtful study of economic and political questions, has convinced Mr. Beveridge that established principles of government are not to be overturned in a day by visionary reformers. Here in Oregon we have found that the direct pri mary, the initiative, the referendum and the recall. ar- not the cure-alls they were widely heralded to be for the ills of the body politic. We are all likely to be better off when we come to depend less upon govern mental frills and fancies, and more upon fulfillment of the obligations of n vigilant, faithful and conscientious citizenship. The movement on foot to estab lish a Protestant hospital at Pendle ton which will bo a county and not a Pendleton enterprise is worthy of every encouragement. The care be stowed upon the aged an ailing is a mark of an enlightened era. The proper facilities are needed, and it would appear that they are by no means sufficient in this county. The right place for the sick is a well appointed and well-conducted hospi tal, where they have the intelligent care and treatment that cannot be provided in the best, regulated homes. Those who help this enterprise may themselves profit by its fruition. Lloyd George's prestige has sur vived worse shocks than the news that the American heavyweight champion is far more popular in Ber lin than the English premier. The election of a former Portland barber as mayor of Seattle will not be regarded in Portland as a step upward. We do not know what the Chinese are fighting for, unless it be to make China unsafe for anybody. An exchange tells of a wise old minister who before parting with a young couple he had joined in matri mony, used to slip a card into the bride's hand on which was printed this advice "When you marry him love him. After you marry him study him. If he is honest humor him- If he is generous appreciate him. If he is sad cheer him. When he is quarrelsome ignore him. If he is slothful spur him. If he is noble praise him. If he is confidential en courage him. If he is secretive trust him. If he is jealous cure him. If he favors society accompany him. When he does yoi' a favor thank him. When he deserves it kiss him. Let him think how well you under stand him, but never lot him know that you manage him." Yet it is cold comfort for the wets that wine has been declared exempt from prohibition in Iceland. We hear no more of the Kilkenny cats. The strife there now is decid edly unfelir.e. If Woodrow Wilson has his way, there'll be a broken Keed in old Missouri. The Churches Metholist Services Sunday s.'hool 10 a. m. There will be no morning service at 11 o'clock. Usual evening service at 7.30. Prayer meeting Wednesday, 7:30 P. M. All are cordially invited to attend these services. C. L. Lowther, Pastor. It costs only $1.47 a day to main tain a family of five in the Pacific Northwest, on an average, according to figures collected by the Loyal Le gion of Loggers and Lumbermen. But this low cost is for living, not flivving. One almost gets the impression that our brave boyB went across earlier in order that Jack Dcmpsey tould get into Germany without breaking through the Hindenburg line. News purveyors should 1b- tin to realize that all Ihe world does not love a lover to the extent of being eternally edified over the affair of Max and Mathildo. The fact that Dempsey's triumphal progress in Europe has so far been a peaceful one, is doubtless due to his palpable prejudice against fight ing in Europe. "The highwaymen got in just uhcad of the government," is the way the New York Tribune explains the 35 percent shortage in the income ax returns. The "wonder gM" psychic of Kan sas City has been nble to locate ev erything except tho wrist watch she herself lost. Evidently she couldn't find the time. An Ohio woman who is thought to have murdered five husbands for their life insurance may have been actuated each time by a certain defi nite policy. Beggared European kings have reason to envy the American kind of royalties that of the inventor of "Eskimo pie" beint; $20,000 a week. If men heed the decree to wear suspenders this season instead of belts, there'll be no further danger of a slip 'twixt the waist and the hip. A few more Catholics than Protest ants have been killed around Belfast, but we look for a holy and zealous effort to even up the score. Conan Doyle claims that death is a pleasant experience, but Mark Twain would want this theory tested by his wife's relations. The g. o. p. leaders are due to find that it is by no means a kickless Beveridge that the political pot has brewed in Indians. Reversing the usual order, the ex plosion at Genoa follows the report whenever it is made by a confer ence committee. We now have dancing to wireless music, but there is a limit to all marvels. It isn't done by legless dancers. If the democrats regain control of the house in the next congressional elections, it will probably not be due lb any particular hurt that they will Alfred J.
