'Hjs j Press Paragraphs Mayor Barrett was a Pendleton risitor yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Arther Coppock were in Pendleton yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Barnes spent baturday with relatives in Weston. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Koepke visi ted fyiends in Pendleton, Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Will Piper have been guests of this week of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Prestbye. AGrant Prestbye was operated on 5i Pendleton Wednesday for the re moval of tonsils. Mrs. Lilla Kirk was a dinner euest of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lumsden, of Weston, Sunday. Omar Stephens and Marion Han sell shot with the Pendleton Gun Club Sunday, at Collins Park. Glenn Stiff drove over to Pilot Rock Friday evening, taking over a load of rooters for the basketball game. Omer Stephens drove his car to Pilot Rock Friday evening, and took over a number to witness the basket ball game. The February meeting of the Chris tian Missionary society held at the home of Mrs. R. A. Thompson Wed nesday afternoon, was one of more than usual interest. The subject, "Tibet, the Roof of the World," was led by division No 1, and papers read by Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Sherman and Mrs. Don. Wilks, gave much information therein. The devotion session was led by Mrs. F. E. Russell, and re freshments were served by Mrs. G. R. Gerking and Mrs. F. Pinkerton and the hostess. The March meeting' will be held at the home of Mn Hill. The Human Bakeoven has again opened in Athena. Patients will be received on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. Mrs. James Duncan, who has been very ill with peumonia, is conval escing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Betts south of town. . . Mrs. J. A. McSherry, (Alta Sharp,) arrived this week from her home in Tacoma and is visiting her parents, Divnd Mrs. S. F. Sharp. LOTembers of the Willamette Uni veVsity Glee Club were entertained in the homes of Athena residents dur ing their visit to the city, yesterday and last night. Mrs. Charles McFardand Accomp anied Mr. and Mrs. Guy Arbogast to their home in Grant county, last week, and will visit her daughter, Mrs. Arbogast for a time. Miss Dolly Stubblefield, member of the girls basketball team suffered the dislocation of one of her fingers, while practicing with the team on the gym floor recently. Henry Wood will observe his 86th birthday to day, and the old pioneer is well and hearty, age considered. His many friends wish for him many more birthday anniversaries. ill I sun Sprat int It Everett James, private secretary to a drug firm in New York City was the guest of his aunt, Mrs John Stanton, Wednesday. He is the son of Mrs. L. Patton of Pendleton. fhe Athena Home Laundry has in led a dryer that will take care of a washing in short order. The dryer is used on short orders and is prov ing to be a great device in that re spect. The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs virgu wniaoy is slowly recovering from her recent alarming illness with pneumonia. The nurse was discharg ed this week, and the recovery of the little one is confidently expected. Miss Lucinda Dell returned Monday with her parents from Portland. While absent she attended the formal annual party of the sorority of the U. of 0. to which Miss Areta Little john belongs, as her guest. -JfZero weather was reported by Aihena thermometers Tuesday night of this week. Winter is becoming monotonous and reports of the ap pearance of robins and other har bingers of springtime, will be wel comed. Prof. Basler, instructor in the Athena High School, and athletic coach, has been confined to his room during the past week with illness, and Mrs. Basler has been teaching in his place. Mr. Basler was threat ened with pneumonia. Charles Depuis of Adams, was an Athena visitor yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Price of Weston were in the city yesterday. Alex Mclntyre has presented his wife with a new Light Six Studebaker car. All who have made dress forms will please notify Mrs. W. McPherson project leader. Mrs. Arnold Wood has returned from a visit to her sister at North Powder. folarence Hand and wife will move 'to' Iley Winn place on Pine Creek, where Mr. Hand will be employed by Marion Hansell, who has the Winn place under lease. Mr. Hand has formerly been employed by Arthur Coppock. The members of the Etude Club acted as hostesses yesterday and last night to the Willamette U. Glee Club, entertaining the young men by couples in their homes. Last night, with their husbands, they attended the concert at the school auditorium in a body. Beginning on February 7th, Dolph Lodge No. 80, A. F. & A. M. will change its regular meetings from the first and third Saturday to the first and third Tuesday of each month. Remember the first meeting night, Tuesday, February 7th. All members are requested to be present. Mrs. C. A. Barrett received word of the death of Anthony Bradley, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Bradley, for mer residents of Athena. The young man, who was born in Athena, 28 years ago, died at Omaha on the 26th inst., as the result of pneumo nia, although he had been in poor health for some time. Monday being the natal day of M. L. Watts, (what anniversary, depon ent sayeth not,) the occasion was cel ebrated by a birthday dinner pre sided over by Mrs. Watts, at which the guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Homer I. Watts, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Rich ards and Mr. and Mrs. 0. 0. Steph ens. Interesting lectures were given at the Baptist church on Sunday eve ning and Tuesday afternoon and eve ning of this, week by Miss Withers, a social worker who spent 12 years as a medical missionary in Southern China. Owing to the lectures not having been thoroughly" advertised, many who would have enjoyed hear ing them, missed them. J. H. Sturgis will sell at miblir auction, Tuesday, Feb.7th, at his tlace at Barnhart Station, west of Pendleton, 2.3 head of good mares and horses, 5 mules, 5 Jersey and Holstein milk cows, 10 sets of work harness, 2 jras engines, 2 new 3-bot-tom plows, 2 grain drills and other articles too numerous to mention. Free lunch at noon. Tuesday next. Feb. 7. will be the regular meeting of the Athena Civic Club, when the program, with the subject: "Oregon Authors," will be led by Mrs. F. D. Watts. Roll call will be answered with quotations from Oregon authors. Mrs. C. L. McFadden and Mrs. J. E. Froom. will be hostesses for the afternoon. At the last meetinp, eleven new mem bers were added to the roll. Friends in Athena of Emory Worthington, will regret to hear of his serious illness at his home in Pendleton. A recent visit to physici ans in Portland disclosed the fact that an operation is necessary, but his condition will not warrant this for some time to come. With his wife and baby, he is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. 0. Worthington inPendleton where he is receiving the best of care, so friends report. Evening worship at 7:30; subject, "The First Gospel Sermon." In the ordinary course of human events every person born into this world dies sooner or later. In the Bible there is a record of at least two persons who never experienced this ordeal. Perhaps it has been a long time since you read these accounts. It will do you good to refresh your memory at Bible school next Sunday morning. Just one more thought: Have you asked some one to go to Bible school with you?
