A TEMPERATE VIEW
We are glad to see our own view
of the exposition unpleasantness con
firmed by the Enterprise Record
Chieftain, which says in its current
issue:
"A Portland exposition would be
a ereat attraction. It would be vis
ited by many people of the state and
would bring to Oregon thousands ol
visitors from without, many of
whom would become interested here.
The benefit would accrue chiefly to
Portland. ,
"In launching the project the pro
moters chose a most unhappy sea
son. Throughout the world business
depression and uncertainty prevail.
The rural parts of Oregon have suf
fered their full share of this depres
sion, and the eastern part of the
state has been afflicted grievously.
It is trying to get on its feet, and it
finds the effort calls for all the cour
age, all the resources it possesses.
An added burden, particularly for a
project which would yield no immedi
ate gain, and promised little ultimate
profit, aroused such hostility as has
not been seen in many years.
"Some men argue that Portland
and the state are at loggerheads;
that a great and dangerous enmity
has arisen between the two. This is
far from the case. The state ad
mires Portland heartily and wishes
it nothing but abundant prosperity.
But in this particular transaction the
state feels that Portland failed to
grasp the point of view of the re
mainder of Oregon. Now it is past
and will be forgotten."
It is well that the republican party
of Umatilla county has an efficient
organ at last. It has spent more
money and reecived less in return
in bolstering up the Pendleton
Tribune under former regimes, than
would elect several Newberrys to the
United States Senate. But the ol'
Trib. has always been different un
der the nursing of Harry Kuck. And
right now it is entirely different
from the difference before. If a re
publican county court and a republi
can district attorney need cleaning
up, why, demmit, let the republican
organ do it. "Ish ka bibble."
Perhaps the source of Newberry's
strength in the United StateB Sen
ate, which has resulted in his suc
cess at last, lies in the knowledge of
other republican senators that their
seats are tarred with the same stick.
Inasmuch as the proposed alliance

to regard it as an offensive one.

in 1913. Imports were $865,000,000,

The Anglo-Irish pact pleases the

it unanimous.
If we "get" China, she would also
have her open door regarded as an
exit by a certain Asiatic neighbor.

There has been some Interesting

now Elmer Q. Still of Llvennoie,

large bump of cautiousness, who was
upset from a sail boat and clung all
night to Its bottom. Iu the morning
his hair had turned grey In two tufts
the size of a half dollar on each side
of his head, right over the centers of
cautiousness.
Another was the case of a woman
whose hair fell out over the region of
conjugal love while her husband was
undergoing a serious operation. The
