Mrs. Martha Van Winkle, a respect ed and aged pioneer lady of Weston is reported by the Leader to be fail ing In health. Her daughter, Mrs. Kittle Ray, and son Frank J. Van Win kle, both, of Portland, are with her. Mrs. Van Winkle is an aunt of M. L. and Homer I. Watts of Athena. John Keen, Jr., has been a guest of his sister Mrs. Fred Gross, and his brother Henry Keen, the past two weeks. He has recently received his discharge from the army. He was in the ground service o the avation corps and was in the army for 2? months, 16 of which he served In France. An auto stage line established be tween Weston and Pendleton, by 0 S. No less than three automobile ac cidents were reported from the vic inity of Cold Springs this week. In one Instance, a truck, carrying a live beef was run Into by another cay. The truck was badly wrecked. Accidents are due for the most part as a re sult of the dust In the roads, mak ing it difficult to guide the cars. "Uncle Bill" Taylor, brother of Dave Taylor, has been failing-in health of late, and his friends have grave ap prehension as to his condition. He has been in a hospital in Pendleton tor some time, and relatives are in attendance upon him. The old gent leman has made his home for several years with his nephew, W. R. Tay lor. News has been received of a de plorable accident which happened in Seattle, on July 3rd. A little six year nlci daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enunn Ridenour was run down by an auto mobile, and the child's skull crushed in. a terrible manner. The little one was rushed to a hospital where after a critical operation, her life was saved. I The father, who is at the head of a business college, in the Sound city, Is a nephew of Mrs. F. B. Boyd. Friends and relatives of George Winsbip were overjoyed this morning when the lad came in unexpectedly on the morning train from Pendleton. George has obtained a fourteen dav j furlough, and is on his way from the military hospital at Fort Douglas, ; Utah, to a hospital in San Francisco I where he will remain until fully re I covered, when he will receive his dis charge from the service. He shows marks of his protracted illness follow ing the flu and pneumonia, Mr and Mrs. Benry Koepke and daughter. Dororhy, arrived home Sat urday, from Wataonville, California. Their many friends are glad to welcome Ihem home, Floyd Corporan arrived Tuesday evening from Camp Lewis, where he was discharged from the service. Floyd ha.- been in France for the past year and a half. He enlisted at the beginning of the war and was assigned to duty near Tacoma for several months before going overseas.
