The New York paper's endeavors to substantiate its allega tions against Ford's patriotism, was shown to be weak in the extreme. For instance, Mr. Ford's council drew from a Mr. Abbott, one of the Tribune wit nesses, that he "discovered Mr. Ford was not making a dollar of profits from his war contracts but was turning his share in the concerns which he did not exclusively control and where min or stockholders refused to follow his lead, back to the government. In plants which Mr. Ford and his son owned exclusively all contracts were written to exclude profits." Mr. Ford Mr. Abbott testified, "was one of the most militant Americans he ever met. It was nothing for the manufacturer to be at his plants until two o'clock in the morning, speeding up production of war materials." The former crown pilirro hns he roine n potter nnd Is worrying lext he may develop Into a rock breaker. Freedom of the press will not he curtailed, even to get rid of the In sidious and unscrupulous propagandist. There's nothing of which the hnld mnn Is more proud than the last pie lure showing him with a heavy bead of hair. Athena bears the distinction of befng directly affected by a strrike of na tional proportions that of the teleg raphers. No commercial messages are being sent by the operator here. East ern messages are mailed from Walla Walla. Athena's wire service is not so extensive that the result creates any great inconvenience commercially, nor have we heard of any marked flux uations in the stock market caused by Athene's temporarily interrupted wire communications. ' Mr. Will Mays, the peppery chair man of the National Republican Com mittee, essays the interesting rolo of being original or nothing, He has just coined another political phrase which he sent sizzling around the circuit: "You're either a republican or you're a bolshevik," bawls Will. And for the nonce, Will is being given plenty of rape. Prairie schooner or limousine it's all the aame to Dame Stork, who, fur thermore, resemble "Time and Tide," in that she "waits for no one." This fact was thrust upon Mr. and Mrs. I. I). Wilson, who were traveling in an automobile from Portland to Kemp, Wash., Monday when that grand old bird visited their car and left a daughter. There is plenty of room in Oregon for Fergus Falls residents who were fortunate enough to escape with their lives from the devastating cyclone of Sunday evening, and who may desire to spend the rest of their lives .outside a storm cellar. Oregon has everything excluding cyclones that Minnesota can boast of, and then some. If "yielding to superior force" is salve sufficient for the new national assembly of the German RepublieJ to sign the peace treaty, we should wor ry. They get all that is coming to them and the allies get the Kaiser. While the "June rain" has failed to materialize, it is evident from the number of new combine machines ar riving in Athena that a crop failure is not expected. Menus daring the war wore sub jected to the process of Americaniza tion. They should not be allowed to relapse. When General Fnch visits the Unit ed States, the welkin will have nerv ous prostration from overwork after Its ringing. Scientists have Isolated the hunger germ. The thing about the achieve ment that Is most Impressive Is Its timeliness. When a fellow admits thnt he's get ting along swimmingly, lie's merely re ferring to the weather, not to his per sonal fortunes. Who among us couldn't hnvc been wealthy long ago hnd we only known that the dandelion' roots we dug were worth 12 to 15 cents a pound? Department of Dgrlcullure figures ihniv (lint hn"a n-n mnrp ntfinttflll thnn ever. And itrevnlllnir nrlees Indicate that nil of them are not In. cold storage. One of the results of the war Is an Irpjnne machine nun thnt ean shoot .1(10 photographs just like bullets. We earth persons will simply have to behave. It Is remarked that n 50-mlutite schedule nnd a tflllll fare for an air trip between New York nnd Atlantic City "sounds plausible." Also exclusive. The fellow who has made his pile Is so sure he can't he swindled that It makes li'tn angry when some smooth chaps get away with several thousands of his money. A western preacher criticizes wom en who spend so much money for dress. He'll probably have no better luck with this sort of criticism thnn the rest of us husbands have. Genernl .Toffre's aid says that thr, French admire the American dough boys: Nohody ever doubted that, for the French have always: been noted for their excellent taste. The Kussliin bolshevlsts arc mak tr)jit real lea; serups of red paper. It would seem that the man on the ocean planes would have smooth sailing. It will bo ninny a long year beforo hatred of the Hun will vanish from the earth. Whenever the bolshevlkl are assured of their rations, they would rather fight than eat. England rlll free her conscientious objectors, but we trust she will not free them sufllelently for them to come over here. Our native breed of that kind of folk Is sufficient. Ten years ago Peary discovered the North pole nnd everybody got excited about it. Everybody ten years ago was able to get excited about com paratively unimportant events. Some returned soldiers are solving the problem of displacing woman work ers by marrying the women and Inking over the Jobs. This Is not forcible an nexation, but benevolent assimilation. We find that under the daylight sav ing plan when the bed and the clock conflict in the morning, the bed wins ; nnd thnt when the bed and the clock conflict late at night the clock wins. "A Jobless War Hero Tries to Kill Himself," says a newspaper headline. IT there Is any appreciation left In the American public, there ought to be no such thing as a jobless war hero. An American soldier claims to have corresponded with 035 women during the war, lineh one may have thought he was "lonely," hut Just wait until they find out who he Is and he enters another war.
