the opportunity is presented for the
paving of the street from the O.-W
K. & N, depot to the intersection of
Fifth street, a distance of five blocks
Perhaps never again woulJ such fav
orable conditions be encountered for
doing this work, so far as assemblage
of equipment and men is concerned

would be on the ground with its plant
in performance of its contract work on
the state highway. Thus the contract
ing company would be in a position
to pave the entire width of the street
with the one operation required of its
machinery and men, already employed
by it in state and county work.
Athena's macademized street has
served its purpose long and well, but
at a frightful cost of maintenance. In
the aggregate, thousands of dollars
have been expended in the years since
the macadam has been in use, for wa
ter binding. ilnd of later years for
oiling the surface of the street.
But how .the wearirip life of the
'macadam has become exhausted arid
its deterioration may be 'witnessed in
the general breaking up of the' surface,
marked by depressions over the entire
length of the thoroughfare which is in
variabl followed by the gouging out
process entailed I y constant automobile
traflic. The stability of the present
macadam surface has ceased to exist.
To remodel the street with macadam
would be sheer folly in the free of
past experience, to say nothing of the
permanency of bitulithic construction
over that of the macademized method.
It would seem that Athena with her
street, is in much the same plight in
which the county was confronted with
her macadam road in order to save
what she has left of the road, she Ben
