Matlock. Edward Lafave, the well known res ervation farmer, has received his med al and diploma awarded him by the World's Columbian Exposition fur the best blue stem wheat. The diploma contains the words: "Extra blue Stem; best bushel of wheat Award, for finest quality of wheat; berry plump and uniform; yield, 40 bushels per acre; weight, 60 lbs per bushel " The Normal School at Weston ex pects to be favored by a visit from the poet, Joaquin Miller, during Com mencement week. Fa will deliver one of his interesting lectures. General Coxey, of national reputa tion as the organizer and leader of the "Commonweal Army" of two years ago, spoke in Pendleton Saturday to a very large crowd. Born, in Athena. SEASONABLE DISHES. Qclatln Is an enslly digested food and one especially good for desserts after a hearty meal. Jellied Prunes. Wash ono pound of prunes, souk In cold water over night and cook un til tender ; cut each prune Into three or four pieces (discarding the stones). There should bo about five cupfuls of the prunes and liquid. Dissolve one package of gelatin softened In ono cup ful of cold water in the hot prune juice; ndd one cupful of sugar and one linlf cupful of ornnge marmalade or the Juice of ono lemon ; stir until It hoglns to thicken, then turn into mold. Set aside In a cool place. Casserole of Rice and Veal Line a mold slightly greased with steamed rice. Kill the center with two cup fuls of cold coolttMl, chopped veal, sea soned with unit, popper, celery salt, cnyenno, onion and lemon juice. Add one-fourth of n cupful of crnckcr crumbs, one egg slightly beaten and cnnuirli hot slock or Water to moisten. Cover the meat with rice, cover the rice with a buttered paper to keep out the moisture, and steiim 45 min utes. Serve on a platter surrounded with tomato sauce. Tomato Sauce. Melt two tnble spoonfuls of butter, nrtdi two tnlile spoonfuls of flour, and when well blended and cooked add one cupful of strained tomato which has been cooked with a slice of onion for flavor. Cook all together, add one-hnlf ten spoonful of salt, and one-eighth of a teaspoonful of pepper. Cream of Celery With Almonds. Cook two cupfuls of chopped celery until tender, then drnln. Add n tn blespoonful of corn starch mixed with a cupful of cream and one cupful of almond meats blanched and chopped. Cook until thick. Season with salt and paprika, Peach Custard. Arrange alternnte layers of cake and sections of canned peaches In n dish and cover with a boiled custard. Bnnnnns, sweet or anges or preserves of various klndi may bo used In place of the peaches. Machinery for the crushing and as- phaltum plant is being assembled near McMinnville, preparatory to beginning the work of hard-surfacing eight miles of road between McMinnville and Bel-levue. Satisfactory progress is being made In the construction of the Elgin-Minam post road, with Indications that the project will be finished this season. The road covers a distance of nine and one-quarter miles. A larger acreage of rye has been planted in Lane county this year than ever before and people who are rais ing the cereal are enthusiastic over its value, according to N. S. Robb, county agricultural agent. The Benson Lumber company Is to chip three rafts of logs to 3an Diego this summer.
