Ulakeley of Pendleton, yesterday, on irvitation of Mrs. Blakeley's daughter Mrs. Sam Thompson. The Oregon state trap shoot win be held at Pendletonu next week, be ginning Monday. Athena shooters are interested in the big contest, and some f them will probably participate. Major Lyman Griswold, after serv ing with tho engineers in France for 14 months, has returned to his home in Helix. Major Griswold was gassed while in command of his battalion In the field. With warmer weather, garden truck is growing fast and grain is forging ahead. A number of splendid sam ples of growing grain were brought to town th'.'n week and exhibited by the farmers. Weston relatives have received an nouncement of the death of Fdward Beathe, which occured April 10. The ycung man who was raised at Weston, was an engineer on a United States transport. Mrs. M. L. Watts is driving a fine new Winton Six purchased a"t Walla Walla this week. The car is a beau ty and is equipped with up-to-the-minute appliances. A feature is the upholstering. J. M. Hayes, a former Athena, resi dent, is here visiting at the honw ot -his daughter, Mrs. Frank Berlin. Mr, Hayes but recently returned from the Middle West, whee he visited relatives In Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. Watts & Rogers will soon have new effice quarters In the Barrett Building,; The office will be located at the back end of the store room. It will be con structed of concrete, Hiram Knight having the construction contract. Odd fellows day at Pendleton last Saturday, where the lodge's of the county met and celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the order, was a big event for all who at tended from here. In Mrs. Miller's real estate office is displayed a wheat sample from Alex Mclntyre's field, the stalks measuring 27 inches. Mr. Mclntyre has a large acreage of growing grain that at this time gives excellent indications ot producing a bumper yield, with favor able growing conditions. Jos. X. Scott also has a large acreage which shows up exceedingly well. In fact. the en tire producing area of this section looms up In very favorable light, at this time The Weston Leader reports that as a result of the extremely heavy snows In the mountains considerable damage 'was done to buildings at the Blue Mountain sawmill. Roofs of the bunk house, barn and box-shook warehouse partly collapsed under the weight of what was reported at one time to have been nine feet of snow. Elmer Storle, of the firm of Stur tris & Storle. was In town Tuesday from Walla Walla. The firm has dis posed of a large number of caterpil lar tractors and self-propelled har vesters this season. They had a splen did exhibit at the Walla Walla trac-' tor show last week. Henry Thompson was in town Wed nesday and took a bunch of Henry Barrett's sheep to the foothill range across the Umatilla river. The sheep were wintered on the Barrett place north of town, consists of a band of ewes and lambs, and left for the range In good condition. NRoss Catron, employed by Alex Mo ri tyre, was kicked by a mule Monday and seriously injured. IMP. Catron was struok in the stomach, and Dr, Sharpe was at onca called in attend ance. The patient is getting along as well as could be expected at this time. John Rothrock and Green Estes ritemplate taking a recreation trip infer the mountains in the southwest part of the county. They have loaded an automobile with bedding fishing tackle and grub, and propose to re main in the hills for some time. Joe Hodgson has "fixed up" his office at the mill in truly elegant style and now it is said that all he needs is a young lady stenographer of a type to match the furniture. Weston Leader. For the second time In a period 01 16 years, the county jail contained no prisoners, this week. On April 8 1918, the Jail was unoccupied by prls oners, for the first time in 15 years, remaining tenantless for three days, No meeting of the local Red Cross was held this weejt on account of hav ing no work on hand, but a consign ment consisting of boys shirts has been received, and a good attendance is re quested for next Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. George Banister enjoyed a short visit Wednesdav from her sister, Mrs E. George Gross was taken suddenly ill at his home on Fourth street, Wednes day evening, but is much belter at present. The Churches, Baptist Church Notes. The Bible school will meet as usual at 10 a. m. This will be the only ser vice at the church next Sunday on ac count of the Umatilla Baptist Associa tion meeting at Pendleton. A week from Sunday, Mothers' Day will be appropriately observed. The music and the sermon will be in keeping with the day. Make yuur plans to attend. Methodist Episcopal Church. We were delighted with our services last Sunday. First, a larger number at Sunday school, an inspiring sight being the large class of boys. Several were baptized and ten joined the church in the morning service. And at niuht a large and aDnreciative audience ftfijoyed the sacred concert of recitation and song.
