U. will be held next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. Bedgood. Melville Johns is reported recover ing from the flu, at Vancouver, and will soon be able to return to Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Groves were in town Tuesday from their ranch on the Umatilla, trading with Athena merchants. Misses Helen Russell and Vernita Watts will return to St. Helens Hall, Portland, tomoirow, to resume their studies. Maurice Hill writes that he is or dered with his aviation corps, to New York, with what object, he is un informed. Miss Zola Keen came home Thurs day of last week for a short vacation, the college at Whitman being closed on account of the epidemic. Miss Vina Conley, of Walla Walla, was her guest over the week end. A. B. Groves this week purchased the J. B. Anderson home on South 3rd street, which will be occupied by the family of W. E. Haynie. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson will remain in Athena, so it is reported. Adams went over the top in the first day of her drive in the War Work Campaign, exceeding her quota of liaOO. handsomely. Lawrence Lieu allen was one of the principal solicitors behind the gun, down there. The postponed meeting of the local branch of the Red Cross for election of officers will be held next Wednesday afternoon. At this meeting, a consign ment of relief Bewing will be on hand, full attendance is desired. Mrs. A. A. Foss took a number of in street views with her camera during the pUriotit celebrations. He is now ticket agent for the company at Walla Walla, and recently had a severe case of the Span ish influenza, at the home of his pa rents in Pendleton. The condition of Ira McDonld, at the home of Mrs. D. McDonald in Walla Walla, is said to be very low, and he is scarcely expected to survive through the week. From the East Oregonian we learn that Clark Wood, who has been on the Walla Walla Gazette, for the past lew weeks, is talking of again assuming charge of the Weston Leader. During the nights the foie part of the week several coyote concerts given on the surrounding bills could be plain ly heard by Athena residents. Edward J. Murphy and Miss Jennie Nelson, well known young people of Pendleton, were united in marriage Monday. Larry BarneB, formerly a resident, of Weston and well known to many Ath ena people, was in town from Douglas county. Wash., Monday ot this ween. Major Collins, the mustering officer of Oregon National Guard is expected to arrive in Pendleton this evening to muster in a new company. Sundav is Master Dick Winship's seventh birthday and invitations have been issued to his young friends to be with him on that day. The residents of this section awak ened yesterday morning to behold a snell of weather consisting ot snow, rain and sleet. A Sundav school has been organized at Lamar school house by J. W. Adams vice president of Umatilla County Snn day School Association. The organ ization was perfected with seventeen scholars with T. J. Watts, superinten dent; rkmer Watts, assistant super intendent; Link Swaggart, secretary and Mrs. Swaggait, treasurer. They joined Mr. Averill at Helix, taking a Northern Pacific train from that point. The Athena Red Cross was recently presented with a White Leghorn roost er by Mrs. J. R. Mathers, to be auc tioned off for the benefit of the organ ization. The members of the local branch feel that had they offered the bird at auction on the street during the recent celebration, a tidy sum would have been netted. However, no one thought of it until after the jubilee was over. Much sorrow is felt among Athena friends over the death of Henry Bain, a former resident of the Adams vicin ity, but lately residing on a farm near Walla Walla. Mr. Bain was a son-in-law of J. T. Lieuallen, his wife being a sister of Mrs. George Wood ward. Mr. Bain succumbed to the in fluenza, after being thought on the road to recovery. Besides his wife, he leaves two young sons. At the Joseph N. Scott home, Wed nesday evening, a sumptuous birthday dinner was served by Mrs. Scott, in honor of her husband's Und natal day. The guests who enjoyed Mrs. Scott's well known hospitality, were: Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Walter, Mrs. and Mrs. 0. H. Reeder. and Miss Lois Porter. A splendid roast turkey, in the midst of the general color scheme of red, graced the board, and the birthday cake made fitting climax to the feast. The flowers were red carnations. The 3rd and 4th grades are at work after their long vacation. Only two pupils were out Monday to "cele brate." George Pratt is nOw enrolled in the 3rd grade. New pupils in the Eth and tlth grade room this week nre: Katherine Mc Intyre. Marcus Pratt and Haruld Me Clintock. Gale Pierol has not returned from the mountains where he spent the vacation. Gertrude Martin and Merl Dickenson withdrew from school during the vaca tion. Little Margaret Herndon, who has been staying with Mrs. Jerry Stone and going to school here, has gone to the country for awhile. Ralph and Edwin McEwen entered onday. . No other event since tit beginning of time has meant so much for the peace and welfare of humanity, as the sur render of Germany. Every noble feel ing of the heart has been stirred to its profoundest depths. And along with this and right in the mitlst of our jubi lation, the way is opened for our re turn to the Church. What a meaning ful service it will be, when next Sun day morning we come into the sanc tuary to meet our God and to give expression to the fullness of our hearty' joy and thankfulness. We begin again next Sunday our record of church attendance. Let every single member and friend of the church be preent. In the evening there will be a union meeting at the Methcdiat church, a celebration of the Allied victory and final triumph of truth. How fitting ' such a meeting at this time.
