"Saved by n ton of dough" micht he the title for an account of the adven tures of the steamship Armenia In the submarine zone. The vessel was struck by a torpedo. Aboard was uu armed guard of American seamen under the Command of Chief Boatswain s Mate Stiff Homlak, U. S. N. The naval men made all preparations for placing the passengers in lifeboats, for the ship had a wide breach below the water line and a second torpedo was momen tarily expected; but they did not In tend to abandon their vessel until they were sure it was going to sink. Going below they succeeded In checking the Inflow of water to some extent by a patch made of a collision mat and some pieces of canvas, but there was still a formidable leak. Thereupon the sailors proceeded to smash open a large number of barrels of flour which they found In the hold and shoveled this material into the breach. Soon It was filled With an enormous mass of dough, which so effectually checked the leak that the sldp was brought Into port by her resourceful crew, u July Clearance Sale Summer Goods BEGINS FRIDAY, JULY 5th Lack of time to give full detail, is reason for our big "ad" not appearing in todays issue. OREGON, JULY 5, 1918 Athena has been 80 BCCUttoined l going over the top in war subscription drives, that the present situation per taining to the Wur Savings Stamps campaign is more than disappointing. With a quota of 2?,00d to raise, ap proximately 115,000 of that amount has been pledged here. Other low, in in the canity have exceeded their u,uo ta, There is absolutely no excuse for Athena to lag behind other towns in raising her iUutu. The money is here and the loyalty and patriotism of the community cannot be questioned. There remains but one thing to do, and that Is to injact some "pep" Into the tlrive and go out and get the pledg es. If it is necessary to reorganize the wor 'ing forces, let's reorganize. Wheat flour is again on a "00-50" basis beginning; today. It is said that Oregon again went over the top in re sponding to the turning tmck of flour in the home larder. In Washington state, little if any attention was paid to the request, and it is even claimed that Umatilla county people, after i turning back their flour to the homo grocer, went to Walla Walla and pur chased more. Tbo fact that no new wheat has been ground into Hour at 'his time and the old flour has been released on the market, indicates there was no real necessity for Oregon going it alone in the demand that all flour bu returned down to the last pint. The only possible advantage that wuuld have reuslted was in the expected re turn of flour held in excess quantities, and this could have been better accom plished through the process of search warrants. Knmrading with kittens and cigar- i otto offerings may capitulate the Kuss. I hut the Hun will find the Yankees will not fall for that sort of propaganda. A spiko-Iielnieted head thrust above a German parapet looks better to a Sam my through the open sights of an army rifle, th:i a MiifTy kitten placed there iii token of camouflage friendship; anil willow bark rolled in a dish-rag would taste butter than h cigarette made in Uer many. Umatilla COUntV Officials have In notified from North Carolina that tlic moonshiners recent! captured by Sheriff Tayor, are both men id' good repute in their native state. Due is the father of nine children and the other of three, so the sheriff is in formed. The daddy of nine was also in ttbe responsible position of post master in his own home town, and the proprietor of a store, lie made his escape from the officers here and i still at large. Presumably he is hid ing in the brush of the tarheel state, subsisting on corn pons and bacon rinds surreptitiously slipped to him by protecting and admiring friends. Tho other is in jail and his lineage has not Dten given but hack home he too probably held in high esteem. Hack Ihcre it may be un enviable accom plishment to be a moonshiner. here that vocation has not been class ified, for we arc new at the game. Copper kettles, worms and jinny-Jugs Athena could well afford to offer the state veterinary board a subject lor the next experiment in dehraying the bray. Should the oflfcr be accept ed, and the experiment prove a auc cess, the board would have the undying gratitude of a community that has I long since tired of a serenade that is nothing short of an annoying nuisance and a noisome disgrace. Complaints are made by people who travel the old Woodward or Lincoln road between here and Klgin that toll is collected unlawfully from them. The charter for this road has been expired for several years, but most of those who pass that way do not know it, and naturally think they have to pay toll, says the Statesman. There is not as much water taken from the system by our citizens as there should be. Those who are using the wate-aro satisfied as to quality, and the fresh, green lawns that -are irrigated with it are proof sufficient that the water does not "kill the grass."
