GOOD FEED RACK FOR SHEEP Concise Directions Given for Making Convenient Device Trough Saves Leaves and Chaff. A good feed rack for sheep may eas ily be constructed us follows: Use a pole for the bottom roll and a 2x6 inch scantling for the top rail. The cross bars (of any old piece of timber) are four feet long and ouo and one-half Inches In diameter. The bottom rail Is held in place agulnst the side of the burn by two strips of heavy sheet-Iron which havo been bent to lit around the pole. The top rail Is secured by a pleco of hulf-lnch ropo which passes over a sill Convenient Sheep Rack. pulley located In u hole In the wall above the rack, a weight being at tached to thu outside end of rope, serving to always keep tho ruck against the wull. When the bay Is put In, the rack Is drawn down, and when llllt'ti Is pushed back against the wall, holding the hay In place closely and kept In place by the weight. The grain-trough placed beneath and In front of the rack serves us n receptacle for the chaff and leaves of the hay- the best and most nourishing part of the feed which would other wise be pulled under foot and lost as food. MUCH LOSS DUE TO RODENTS Farmer Should Build Cribs and Gran arlei to Exclude Rata and Mice to Save Big Watte. One of the big wastes on the farm Is the loss (hie to mlco nnd rats. This loss In the United States runs Into millions of dollars every year, and each farmer should endeavor to reduce this waste by building cribs and granaries so that rodents will be ex- lmlotl. PRODUCTION OF POULTRY The average size of tne farm flock In the United States Is 40 hens. If the average Is In creased to 100 hens next year there will be an Increase of 6, 500,000 pounds af much needed food poultry and eggs. An equal number of pounds of beef and pork would thus be saved for army purposes. Many farms, of course, can have flocks of several hundred, and some farms -will have to keep less. But the effort of the food ad ministration is to increase the farm average to at least 100 hens. It is an astonishing fact that there are l'a million eggless farms in the United States an economic anomaly and an agri cultural absurdity. Even If we bad. never been forced to go to war with Germany this condi tion would be one demanding every effort at correction for ! each farm can, at least, produce sufficient poultry and eggs for , home consumption, and thereby be a more profitable farm. t Half Bathrobea. The despised and lowly English spar row Is In reality ns much of a benefit as a detriment to the farmer, In the opinion of Dr. Mary T. Harman, as sistant professor of zoology In the Kan sas state agricultural college. "The English sparrow," said Doctor Harman, "has been greatly maligned, and In many cases unjustly, because of Its habit of nesting in barns, under the eaves of porches, nnd even In attics. "The sparrow Is doing much toward keeping down the dandelion pest. The birds are seed eaters and weed seeds are an important factor in their menu. English Sparrow. One of the strongest arguments In fa vor of the birds, Is that they consume large numbers of termites, cabbage worms, and alfalfa weevils. The food of the sparrows In the city Is mostly wusto material. "In a few cuses where the destruc tion of the sparrows is desirable, pois oned bait such as wheat and other small grains may be used. It must be remembered, however, that what will kill the sparrows will also kill more deslrablo birds. As a general rule the good thut the spurrow accomplishes more than offsets the harm." BUILDING UP A DAIRY HERD Essential That Dairyman Be Breeder Muat Produce Milk, Cream or Butter of Quality. Experience has taught the farmer who is In the dairy business. There Is ev erywhere the cry for roads. The draw back has been thut, ns yet, there has been no co-ordination of these multi tudinous enterprises. The president of the National Highways association. Charles Henry Davis, in a recent paper stated that we spent last year $249,- 055,907, or more than two-thirds the total of money expended so far on the construction of the Panama canal for road Improvements throughout the country. Mr. Davis' contention Is that good roads, roads that run for thou sands of miles through state after state, are, properly, not the responsi bility of the state, but of the nation. He would have the federal government build a system of national roads Join ing the West with the East, the North and the South, connecting every part of the country, as Is the case with the national highways of Europe, and, as history shows, such as was the essen tial equipment of every first-class power of the past, according to the Boston Evening Transcript. How would such an enormous con struction be paid for and kept up? "Suppose, asks this eminent engi neer, "the government built lOO.oou miles of properly planned roads, and at the same time purchased, say, 800 Good Road Needed. feet of land on either side? This land would so continually Increase In value and In demand for leasing on long rental, that the cost of the road and the land purchase would soon be paid. A rental rate of $6.06 per acre would pay the Interest on the cost of con struction. But such would rent at vast ly higher rates' In cities and towns, high enough to give the nation an In come equal to Its total annual expendi tures, from these national highways alone I" GOOD HIGHWAYS IN ONTARIO Approximately 55,000 Miles of Road In Province -43,000 Miles In Fairly Good Condition. The province of Ontario has ap proximately 55,000 miles of road. More than 43,000 miles have been treated and are In fairly good condi tion. About 20,000 miles are well- graded earth roads; about 8,000 miles are surfaced with broken stone and about 19,000 are surfaced with gravel. In the city of Toronto there Is one motorcar to every twenty-five Inhab itants. INCREASED VALUE OF FARMS Influeace of Road Improvement on Ru ral Property Is Described by Bal timore Financier. The Influence of road Improvements on the value of rural property was de scribed In a letter recently sent to the Manufacturers' Record by the president of the Baltimore Commercial bank, who wrote : "Around my home town In Virginia property could be bought three years ago for $00 to $80 an acre. We put a fine road several miles through that county, and today you cannot buy anything for less than $100, and some is held at $150 per acre." If you must have your meat every day, eat It, but flush your kidneys with salts occasionally, says a noted authority who tells us that meat forms urlo add which almost paralyzes the kidneys In their efforts to expel It from the blood. They become slug gish and weaken, then you suffer with a dull misery in the kidney region Bharp pains In the back or sick head ache, dizziness, your stomach sours, tongue is coated and when the weath er Is bad you have rheumatic twinges. The urine gets cloudy, full ot aedl ment, the channels often get sore and Irritated, obliging you to seek relief two or three times during the night 'to neutralize tnese irritating acids,, to cleanse the kidneys and flush oft the body's urinous waste Bet four ounces of Jad Salts from any phar macy here; take a tablespoonful In a glass ot water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine. This famous salts Is made from the acid ot grapes and lemon juice, combined with litita, and has been used for generations to flush and stimulate sluggish kidneys, also to neutralize the acids In urine, so tt no longer Irritates, thus ending bladder weakness. Jad Salts Is Inexpensive; cannot in jure, and makes a delightful efferves cent llthia-water drink. Adv. Net-Work of Good Roads. This whole country will some of these days be a net-work of good rouds, which will have n place on the maps along with the railroads.
