AUGUS The state forester of Oregon is not unreasonable in asking hunters of this state to stay out of the woods until rains shall have decreased the danger of fire. The Western Oregon hunting season opened August 1 5, and sports men would be quite within their rights in insisting that they be allowed to set forth, as in other years, in search of game. But this is not like other sea eons. The summer drouth has been of unprecedented length, and foreBts in all parts of the Pacific northwest are of tindery dryness, ready to flame into disastrous and widespread conflagra tion almost at the touch of a spark. Hunters are hazardous people to be at large in the forests at a time like this. Some of them are skilled woodsmen and therefore above reproach in their manner of handling matches and ex tinguishing campfires. But along with this body of careful hunters there must of necessity be great numbers of careless men, of amateurs and others who have not been made to rea lize the terrible possibilities of stray morsels of fire in dry woods. In the hands of a careless man a match may be as fatal a weapon as a cocked shot gun. An appeal which should strike a responsive chord in the hearts of every loyal son and daughter of Oregon, is being made by the Oregon Army and Navy Auxiliary, which is now seeking to secure sufficient funds for the pur chase of one and perhaps two or three Army ambulances for the Third Oregon Regiment, which is soon to see service on the battlefields of France. It is a big undertaking this work of securing funJs by popular subscription, but in such a worthy cause the women sponsoring the movement believe that the people of Oregon will respond quickly and with a patriotic enthu- Food Administrator Hoover warns America that the world faces a meat famine. He cites figures to prove that this nation's cattle, sheep and hogs are dwindling rapidly under demands of war and in allied Europe threatens to be wiped out entirely. In his opinion, a high range of prices for meat and animal products will confront this country for many years to come. With the new sidewalk vdinance in force, and deplorable condition of many of the walks in evidence, there will probably be considerable construc tion work along that line in Athena this fail. The cost of concrete walks is but little more than when lumber is used, comparatively speaking, and every condition favors concrete. With the ending of harvest, a swim ming pool for Athena, naturally fol lows. Country people are as much interested in having a natatorium here as town people are, and will readily assist in financing the undertaking. A Mulligan Stew Dog days may come and go in the east, but in the west we have round up days with us always. The grasshopper hopped On his hopper, The cop copped his man With his copper; (To be continued) I do not undertake to couple the fact of a long dry spell with the congres sional movement at Washington for National prohibition; the one is with us and 'tother isn't. Chronologically speaking, one of thj principal events that will transpire on September 10th A. D. 11117, will be the opening of the Athena Public Bchools, so I'm informed by the prin cipal. I heartly disapprove of newsjiaper warfare as waged between the subsid ized editor of the Bulldogger and Ker nel Wood of the Leader. It It Fully Equipped All Around Efficient Littl Army. ! you know the definition of the word "corps?" If you do your advan tage iivcr the man In the street is con siderable, for the word in itself signi fies a large fighting force so completely equipped In all branches that it can act as an independent army. And that Is what our marine corps Is - a fully equip, ped Utile avm.T. representing Infnutry, cavalry, artillery, sigunl service, engi neers, moch'.ne gun men, aviators and hospital service. The varied nature of the marine's duties Is reflected lu the dress uniform, his dearly prized "blues." The trousers hit the colcr of the lufuntrymiin's, but I he firlpc Is red, like that oil the uni form of the artillery. His cuut is a dark nautical blue, but if he wears chevrons on it they are yellow, like a eavulryman's. As an example of cos mopolitanism bis cup device bears a relief map of half tbe globe. An eagle with outspread wings eurmouuts the globe, und a fouled anchor shows In the background' To "toll" a marine at a glance (Whatever his uniform or bis ro.uk) look on the front of the bat or the cap for that globe, it is the distin guishing emblem of a marine the world over. Great Britain is the only other pow er that has, hi our Bcnse of tbe word, a real marine corps, and the cap de vice of the Ilrillsh marine also has a globe In thi center of the design. Charles I'belps dishing In New York Independent. A FAITHFUL HORSE. Paul Rivera's Sturdy Stead Fairly En titled to Fame. Paul Itevere's nume was made Im mortal when he rode from Ilostou to Lexington and Concord warning tbe patriots aloug the way of the British approach, and Ills fame has been se curely enshrined In the hearts of all Americans. Historians have honored themselves bi honoring him. Poets have found In spiration in praising him. He is an idol of childhood, au example in the prime of iiiiuihnod and a solacing mem ory of old age. How few characters loom up like great peaks above the mountain ranges of time! And Paul lievere was one of these. He was one of the precious few great enough to grasp an opportunity to do an luciili ulablo good to mankind. But while we give deserved glory to Paul ltevete let us no longer forget that there was another hero in that wild midnight ride. There was the horse. "Any other horse might have done as well,'' you think? Well, so might any other man have done as well perhaps. So might we flippantly disparage any hero. But the fact remains that it was Paul llevere and Paul Bevere's horse :lmi did It. And the harder work fell on the horse. But for the WOT '.torse's faithfulness Paul Kevere would uavo been a failure. Christian Herald. Learn History by Novels. In the Woman's Home Companion Anno Bryan Met nil says: "One of the pleasautext ways I know of making varied travels into history is by rending historical novels. I re member that when I was twelve years old I rend Harrison Alnsworth's 'Wlnd- ; sor Ciistle,' and when 1 whs Il'teeu I j read Scott's 'Keuilworth.' When I was ' sixteen I read Hawthorne's 'Scarlet I letter." i was not thinking of history at all when I read them. I read them solely for the story. Yet from those three books I learned more of the I times of Henry V1H. and Queen Elli- alieth and of early American days, I do believe, than In the tunny historical j chapters iirvcrlng those times that I I have read since. Those books made : theso times live for me. and it was as i though I myself were living in them." Catarrh Cannot Be Cured with LOCAL APPLICATIONS, as they cannot reach the seat of the disease.
