She leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. J Program announcements have been Iwaiyed in Athena for the twenty nifth Stimuli reunion of the Umatilla County Pioneers and the 'fifth annual reunion of the Sons and Daughters, of Pioneers at Weston, today and to morrow. These reunions have more than special interest for the people of Umatilla county. They are always well attended. With favorable wea ther Athena will be practically depop ulated tomorrow. ' The June meeting of the Christian Woman' Board of Missions was held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Casper Woodward west of town, and those present are enthusiastic in praise of the splendid hospitality shown by the hostess. The commodious rooms were profusely decorated in lav ender and white lilacs, the colors of the society, and presented a charming effect. The topic of the day was: "My Daughter, and Missions," led by 1 Mrs. Errett. A musical program was given by pupils of Mrs. W. K. Scott, and other interesting features made up a day long to be remembered. The officers of the society were re-elected, an i delegates chosen to attend the con vention at La Grande. About fifty, in cluding fourteen children, partook of the elaborate refreshments provided by the hostess and her efficient assistants. Miss Butler, domestic science in structor of the Pendleton schools, will hold a meeting in Athena at the high school auditorium at 3 p. m. June i4 for the purpose of discussing food con servation and canning, with the women and girls of the city and vicinity. Miss Butler is touring the country in the interest of the food preparedness movement. Mrs. M. L. Watts, delegate from Mignonette Rebekah lodge of Athena, to the Grand lodge cession at Eugene received the honor of appointment to the office of Grand Chaplain in the Grapd lodge. Members of the local lodge and friends are greatly pleased to hear of this merited honor, which comes as the result of appreciation of interest taken by Mrs. Watts in lodge affairs and in work well done. Ignoring the announcement of their "at home to their friends after June t5th," the aforesaid friends of Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Gleiser invaded their home last Saturday evening, about sixty strong, and gave them a most cordial reception. The newly wedded pair arose to the occasion and gave their uninvited guests a heerty wel come. Speeches were made by the heads of various departments of the Methodist church, in welcome to the pastor and his bride. The principal address was made by Mayor Homer I. Watts, who stated that, though not a member of that church, he could give some acceptable advice, which he pro ceeded to do, with characteristic vigor and aplomb. A bounteous supply of ice cream was served by Mrs. H. 0. Worthington, Mrs. W. C. McQuary, of Milton, and her son John, visited friends in Athena this week. The band stand at the corner of Main and Fourth streets has been com pleted and represents a very neat appearance. Strawberries from Milton are selling three boxes for a quarter, and in a short time will be lower. The fruit is fine with a delicious flavor. Mrs. Ida Gillis attended the exercises of the Normal school at Weston, Tues day evening and contributed a vocal solo to the entertainment of the guests. All the telegraph business between Eastern Oregon and Portland is now going via Spokane and Seattle. There is no attempt being made to use any part of the line down the Columbia as it is mostly under water. The Dalles is entirely shut'Jout from telegraphic communication with the outside world. The sixty foot span'over Desolation creek at the North Fork of the John Day went down the other day with a big lot of cattle upon it. No one was injured, but several cattle were drow n ed. People are now on both sides who desire to cross, but will not be able to go over until the river goes down. The Milton and Walla Walla fruit growers have indeed had bad luck. Just as strawberries tell ripe, tne nign water blocked the railway traffic, and unless roads open up the entire crop will be a loss. The high waters in the Columbia river, caused Dr. 'Griswold to make a midnight ride on last Thursday night. He feared the safety of his family. Gustave Vollmer has some volunteer wheat that measures six feet in height. In general volunteer wheat looks well. Walla Walla is afflicted with a band of thieves, among whom was a woman who bore the cognomen of "Athena." Marion Kees is conducting a very successful day school.
