The 80 acres of land owned by the LaBrasche estate, resale of which was made last Saturday, was bid in by J. A. Baddeley for 1S,000. A total of t)2 bids were made on the land, so it is reported. Mr. Booher moved his household effects about two weeks ago. Mrs. Andrews, aged 50 years, the youngest si3ter of Senator C. A. Bar rett died Sunday at her home in Maine. The cause of death resulted from in juries sustained long ago in falling from a carriage. Charles Norris, the irrepressible, floated up from Cornelius, Washington county, Oregon, U. S. A; and spent the week end with friends in Athena and vicinity. Mrs. B. B. Richards drove her car to Pendleton Tuesday afternoon, ac companied by her mother, Mrs. H. H. Hill, Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn and Mrs. F. B. Boyd. Will R. Scott has leased the Wei- dert place of 720 acres, north of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Weidert will soon leave on a trip to California and later to Alberta. Alex Kirk and J. A. Lumsden went down to The Dalles last Saturday to drive Mr. Kirk's car home from that point, and report a hard time getting over bad roads. Rev. Geo. T. Klein has arrived with his family to take charge of the Free Methodist church in this vicinity. They are residing in the Spencer cot tage, on Third and High streets. Mrs D. H. Mansfield is putting in a fine rose garden at her home, corner of 4th and Jefferson streets. A num ber of trees have been taken out, and also trees have been thinned at the M. L. Watts home. A pastry and cooked food sale will be held Saturday afternoon, April 28, for the benefit of the local Red Cross chapter, A generous donation and pa tronage from the public is solicited by the ladies having it in charge. Geo. W. Bradley, erstwhile county treasurer, was in the city this week, exploiting the advantages of a new wrinkle in half solving automobile tires. George has a good thing in the estima tion of automobile owners and he is pushing it along. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith, who have been occupying the McEwen home, left Wednesday morning for Corvallis, where they will reside in their own property. Leslie Smith, who is attending the Athena High school, will remain until the close of rm, with the W. R. In giving the list last week, the Press inadvertently omitted the name of Moscow Froome, son of George Froome, who enlisted from Athena. Mrs. A. A. Foss returned Sunday from a short visit in Portland. She was a enest of the JSdw. E. Koontz on Saturday, and reports them as well and happy. Mrs. Foss accompanied Otha Reeder to Portland, with his lit tie daughter, to consult a specialist re garding a throat trouble. An opera tion was not considered necessary, and the little girl is expected to recover in due time. Mr. Taylor also gave a check for 1 1209. an to George Gerking for 349 sacks of wheat. The marriage of Clayton A. Sharp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Sharp, formerly of Athena, is reported in Tuesday's Portland Oregonian. The bride is Miss Marie Douglas, of Port land, and the ceremony was performed by Rev. Father C. Smith of Cathedral parish, Sunday night. The Oregonian says: "Mr. Sharp is a prominent member of the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club, and was a star athlete at the University of Oregon. He is connected with the Northwest Steel Company. The bride is a member of the Women's Annex of Multnomah Club, and is popular in her set. The Upper Room, " is the sermon topic at the Methodist church next Sunday morning. The 7:0 p. m. sub ject is: "The Testing of a Nation's Ideals." Special music will be fur nished by the chorus choir. Continued From Page 1. torical contest held in the auditorium last Friday evening, those chosen to represent the Athena school in the Sec tional contest to be held this evening in the auditorium, were as follows: Division D, Elmo Russell; Division D, Mildred Winship; Division B, Zola Keen; Division A, Florence McLennan. The last two speakers had no opposi tion. The interpretation of each speak er was excellent, and all of the oon testants received special commenda tion. In addition to the speaking, a delightful musical program was ren dered, the vocal duets in costume of Richard Cartano and Beulab Banister, and of Jeannette Miller and Savannah Smith and the solo by Velva Mansfield being greatly appreciated. The schools of Milton, Freewater, Weston, Fern dale, Umapine, Athena and vicinity, compose the section which will be rep resented this evening A special pro gram other than the contest has been prepared. With the choice of Rev. Bertram H. Warren of The Dalles, as speaker, the arrangements for the High school Com mencement exercises to be given on May 18 have been completed The members of the Senior class have re ceived their commencement announce ments and will send them out to their friends in a short time. Emery Worthington's town team again met defeat at the hands of the local High boys by a score of 8 to 1 last Friday afternoon in a seven inning game. Although the town team was strengthened by using a Pendleton High school battery and first baseman, they failed to avenge their past de feats. Both sides played a loose game and errors were numerous. This af ternoon Athena High will go to Uma pine to play the first game away from home this season. The strength of the Umapine team is not known, but they will doubtless make it interesting for Athena. Milton High again defeated Athena on the Milton diamond yesterday af ter- by a score of H to 6. Shick pitched for the locals and allowed only three hits. Errors were responsible for most of Milton's scores. All of the scores made by the locals were earned. Esther Miller is absent from Miss Fortna's room on account of measles. Lela Schubert has resumed her work after an absence of three weeks. The students are working on the wreath drill for the May Day festival. Winnifred Klein of Chewelah, Wash., has registered in the High school as a freshman, and her sister, Esther, has entered the seventh grade. The girls of Miss Wagner's room are working on their May pole dance under the direction of Supt. Russell. Mrs. Stanton visited this room during the week. Mr. Pitman and Mr. Young were visitors to Miss Barnes room last week also visiting other departments of the school. How's This?
