John Lumsden, employed on the
William McBride ranch, was kie'eed
in the face by a mule, Wednesday,
and sustained a broken rosj.
Mrs. A. R. Booher, who has been
seriously ill for the past few week), is
reported no better. She has the sym
pathy of many friends in her illness.
J. H. Sheets late of Weston has form
ed a partnership with Frank Boling in
the Blacksmith business, at the Boling

derwent an operation for appendicitis
at the hospital in North Yakima, where
she is in training, is home for a season

The Sunday School Institute held at
the Methodist church Wednesday and
Thursday, drew many prominent work

The ladies of the Baptist Missionary
society held their meeting at the home
of Mrs. George Banister yesterday af
ternoon. After the business session,
light refreshments were served by the
hostess and assistants.
Mrs. Robt. Sowers and daughters,
Arabell and Margaret, of North Yak
ima, were guests of old-time friends in
Athena this week. Mrs. Sowers had
been the visiting her daughter, Mrs.
Rhea, on Basket mountain, the past
week.
Jos. N. Scott has purchased of W.
R. Taylor, the Mansfield land compris
ing S20 acres and 10 acres of the Dud
ley land adjoining, for a consideration
of $50,000. The land adjoins 160 acres
already owned by him, and with his
home place, gives him 92S acres all
west of Athena.
Robt. Coppock will build a bunga
low on bis lots at the corner of Fourth
and Adams streets, which will cost
when completed, about $9,000. A
garage will be built on the south lot
on the Bite of the stable which is now
being torn down. W. R. Proctor, con
tractor and builder, will do the work.
At the Christian church last Sunday
evening the little folks gave a splen
did program. Each individually re
ceived unstinted praise for their work
and the entire program as given in
last Friday's Press was much apprec
iated. The recitation by little Orell
Michener was inadvertently omitted
from the program, and deserves spe
cial mention.
The "Baby Tigers" have organized
for the base ball season with the fol
lowing lineup: Max Newsom, captain
and catcher; Cecil Maestretti, pitcher;

officiating. The bride, who is the
youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John H. Phillips, was attended by her
rrother. The groom is employed in
the Preston-Shaffer Mill, and the young
people will make their home in Ath

at the St. Nichols Hotel the 19th

The recital given in the school aud
itorium Tuesday evening by Misses
Kathren Froome of this city and
Thelma Saling, of Pendleton, pupils
of Mrs. Nellie Whiting McDonald,
was an unusually pleasing event to
music lovers. The program, as pub
lished last week, wa3 given in full,
with the addition of assistance by Mr.
Bert McDonald, violinist. The recital
will be given in Pendleton Monday
evening.
Monday evening W. D. Allingham,
instructor in Manual Training at the
High school, gave the closing lecture
in a series on painting and interior
decoration. The talk was on the ap
plication of enamels, and the good and
bad points in furniture. The series
baa been both interesting and instruc
tive, and though not so largely attend
ed as they shou'd have been, were very
helpful to the patrons of the school
who took advantage of his free in
struction. An unusually interesting meeting of
the Star Club was held Tuesday after
noon at the home of Mrs. M. L. Watts,
with twenty ladies present. After a
short business session, at which the
members answered to roll call with a
quotation containing the word "star,'
the afternoon was passed in informal
sociability, and the hostess served a
dainty luncheon of "lover's delight,"
with appropriate accompaniments.
The next meeting of the Club will be
held at the home oi Mrs. I. W. Ware.
Mr. and Mrs. D. Scott Fisher went
to Milton yesterday, where they at
tended the funeral of Mr. Fisher's sis
ter, Mrs. Effij Louise Milby, who died
at her h( m ). there Wednesday morn
ing. De e sod was the wife of Arthur
Milby, a prominent Milton merchant,
and had been ill for three months. She
was in a Portlard hospital, and her
case being prcnounced hopeless, she
was brought home last Saturday. Mr.
and Mrs. Fisher spent last Sunday
with their sister. The lady was 38
years old, and beside her husband, is
survived by four children. The family
moved to Milton in 1910.

Jackson, we learn he is sgain suffer
ing from rheumatism. He is now at
Hot Springs, Ark. The doctors say
they can cure him in about six weeks.
The Inland Republican is authority
for the following: ; "The new brick
on the Gillis corner will be 60x130 and
will contain four store rooms. Two
will face Main and twq will face Third
street. This will make s handsome ad
dition to Athena' as welt as- a substan
tial improvement.'

Frank Mansfield, west of the city.
Geo. Froome is having his buggies
and hacks repainted, and is now pre
pared to turn out very neat rigs.
W. E. Young went to Weston Wed
nesday and made an offer on a harness
shop that was closed out over there.

man and will make Athena his future

B. Wilder were married last Sunday,
April 8, at the residence of the brides
father in Weston, by Rev W Bowser,
pastor of the M, E. church.

Gazette, the new Walla Walla paper
which will be under the editorial
management of Wilbur Fisk Brock,
will make its appearance about the
14th. inst. We wish the Gazette a
