Mrs. Sherman has been confined to
her home during the week with illness.
H. A. Post, assistant principal of
the Athena High school, was ill Mon
day. Jack Vincent made recent improve
ments to the interior of his jewelry
store.
Mrs. Win Burden is displaying eight
little fuzzy Rhode Island Reds, hatched
February S.
A. L. Swaggart will leave tomorrow
r Portland, where he will sell a car
load of hogs.
Mrs. Lizzie Mansfield was over from
Weston Monday, where she is living
with her sister.
Prof, and Mrs. Homer A. Post spent
the week end with Mrs. Post's parents
in Walla Walla.
Mrs. Lillie Miller desires all indebt
ed to her to come forward and settle
before March 1st.
The tax rolls have been turned over
to the sheriff's office and collection of
taxes is being made.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Brotherton were
down from Waitsburg to 'attend the
funeral of Grandma Pinkerton.
A boy in the family of Alex. John
son northeast of town has been very
sick this week with pneumonia.
Mrs. W. E.Dobson is detained at her
home in this city this week on account
of sickness, and unable to teach.
"fD. H. Mansfield has been in Cald
vlll, Idaho, for several days, where he
I went with a shipment of horses.
Wm. Rice has accepted a position
with the Tum-a-lum Lumber Company,
entering upon his duties Monday of
this week.
John Beaton, a Weston pioneer, al
most as well known as Ben Walden,
was an Athena visitor Wednesday.
Charles Wilks was in town yester
day from his ranch on Cold Spring, and
reported the roads in bad condition.
Mr. and Mrs. F. S. LeGrow left
Wednesday on a trip to New York,
Baltimore and other Eastern cities.
Clea Denny, son of Rev. Denney,
formerly of this vicinity, is down from
Tekoa, Wash., visiting with friends.
Raymond Geissal has accepted the
position in the O.-W. R. & N. depot
recently vacated by George Winship.
Frank Jackson has been very ill at
his home in the north part of town,
for the past two weeks with the grip.
Rex Payne is in Spokane this week,
attending the Holt school for instruc
tion in running the Co.'s caterpillars
und tractors.
Uncle Sam Spencer has been ill this
week and the first part of the week
was unable to leave his home. He is
better however.
The masquerade ball, given at the
Athena opera house, Wednesday night,
was well attended by the young people
of Athena and vicinity.
The Wallowa basket ball brigade
which had no trouble in defeating Pen
dleton high, was waxed unmercifully
by Milton; score 48 to 8.
Mrs. James Nelson is down from her
home in Alberta, having been sum
moned by the death of her mother,
Mrs. Eliza Pinkerton, last week.
Oliver Dickenson returned yesterday
afternoon from Walla Walla with his
son, Merle, who had an operation per
formed at the hospital there for relief
from enlarged tonsils.
Rev. Achilles preached a pleasing
sermon to a large and appreciative au
dience at the Methodist church last
Sunday. A special solo was rendered
by Miss Pearl Coomans.
On Monday, Feb. 1 9, at the Peoples
Theatre, the great Northwest drama,
"God's Country and the Woman," will
be presented. This is a special Vita
graph Blue Ribbon feature in eight
parts.
Salmon trout of the steelhead and
silverside varieties are said to be run
ning in the river, but the water is so
high and discolored as to make fishing
for them out of the question at this
time.

Rev. Milo G. Bently reports a good
meeting at Helix. The Athena Gospel
Team went over last Sunday and ren
dered valuable assistance. Twenty-six
have been received into the church.
"Adam Bede," the beautiful love
story, will be shown in moving pic
tures at the Methodist church Sunday,
Feb. 18. Rev. Andrew Warner, one
of the leading preachers of the North
west will be present.

gallon gasoline tank at their garage,
corner of Main and Second. L. M.
Martin, manager of the Peoples The
ater was the first purchaser of gasoline
at the new supply station.
Scott Fisher, the carpenter, is doing
some artistic work at his shop on 3rd
street. A Dutch kitchen arrangement
for the farm home of Luke Read and
collonades and book shelves for Henry
Keen's home, are examples of fine
workmanship.

A pleasing feature at the Christian
Bible school last Sunday was the chor
us of twenty children's voices, trained
by Mrs. W. R. Scott. The "Junior
choir," as it is called, was a surprise
and elicited much praise both for sing
ers and teacher.
The little five-months-old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burke is report
ed slightly better this morning. The
life of the ilttle one has hung on a very
slender thread all the past week, but
now hopes are entertained for her re
covery. The erysipelas case developed
into spinal meningitis.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Woodward and
children have arrived home from their
visit at Long Beach, Cal. They report
the sunny shores of California as ra
ther bleak, and state that Mrs. Wood
ward and the children have been sick
a good part of the time they were
there.

NvAn incipient fire starting from dish
towels hanging near a hot range in the
Kitchen, of Mrs. Harden's boarding
house calused a fire alarm yesterday
shortly before noon. The hose teams
responded, but no water was turned
on. Aside from discolored woodwork
there was no damage.
On the evening of March 1, at the
High school auditorium, members of
Mignonette Rebekah Lodge will give
the popular play, "Miss Molly." The
play is given as a benefit, with the
object in view of purchasing a new car
pet for the I. O. O. F.-K. of P. hall.
The cast and program will be given
nfejtt week.
' irs. Lloyd W. Smith, of La Porte
City. Iowa, arrived Tuesday afternoon
and Is visiting her mother, Mrs. Min
nie DePeatt. Mrs. Smith and her hus
band were at St. Paul during the Ice
Carnival, and en route Mr. Smith
stopped over at Miles City, Mont.,
with Ralph DePeatt, who is employed
on the railroad.
The Methodist Ladies' Aid society
will serve a Washington's Birthday
dinner in the church Feb. 23.6:80 p, m.
After the dinner free moving pictures
will be shown in the church. These
pictures are especially for the farmers
and business men. The titles are:
"Good Roads," and "The" Uses of Con
crete on the Farm. "
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. McEwen and
daughter, Thelma, took their departure
Monday evening for their new home at
Leaburg, Oregon. They are followed
by the good wishes of their many
Umatilla county friends, who regret to
lose them from their midst. The Mc
Ewen home is occupied by Mr. and
Mrs. J. W. Smith and son, Leslie.

and Mrs. W. S. Ferguson have return
ed from St, Paul, where they had a
fine time at the Carnival. The trip
was made of" especial pleasure to Mr.
and Mra. Taylor, for it afforded them
the opportunity of visiting with their
daughter and son-in-law, who came
from Illinois to attend the mid-winter
festivities.

7:30 followed by business meeting of

next Thursday at 3 o'clock at Mrs.

Seven valiant Knights from Pythian
Lodge of this city, went to Adams
Wednesday evening and affiliated with
the brethren they. After conferring
the third rank, tne boys partook of a
mulligan stew, which they avow was
the best they ever sampled. Made
in a wash boiler, it had more trim
mings than even the Athena Press
mulligans of yore.
Captain Slover, ex-chief of police of
Portland, delivered an interesting ad
dress at High school auditorium, Tues
day evening in the interests of the or
phan and girls homes, both institu
tions of Portland. He was accompan
icd by Hubert G. Miller, a vocal soloist
of pleasing entertaining qualities. The
audience gave lift in benefit of the
institutions for which Captain Slover
is devoting his time.
