The Oregon Voter, a free lanoe puh
lioation of Portland, spots Jonathan
Bourne as follows;
"Jonathan Bourne, Jr., world-citizen,
one-time Senator from Oregon,
and today one of the most influential
men of the nation, is foeding publicity
matter to the press of the wbole oonn
try. Its one harden is the financial
incompetency of the Demooratio ad
ministration. Thousands of columns
of bis authorship are published weekly
throughout the United States. It is
a powerful and telling influence, and,
irrespective of whom the Republicans
nominate for President next summer,
the standard bearer, if successful, may
give serious consideration to the idea
of appointing Mr. Bourne to a Cab
inet position possitly postmaster gen
eral. Oronard and Farm says Oregon is
oxoeptioanlly well adapted to seed
produolion of oertaiu kinds, particu
larly clover seed. Too dry an atmos
phere prevents the seed from filling,
tut the moisture of Western Oregon
and the mild, tempemte climate not
only makes the plants do well, but
oauses the seed production to be heavy,
Other sections which grow clover ex
tensively are not good for seed pro
duction, so rely to a oertaln extent
upon Oregon for the seed to keep them
going, and this makes a good market
for all that oau bn proluoed.

MONEY STORIES OF YAP.
Natives of the Island Do Not Carry
Change In Their Pockets.
Propped up against the bouse of the
native chief of Yap, which is one of
the Caroline islands lying southeast ot
the Philippines, may be Been a row of
"money stones," tho current coin of
the island. In shape these stones are
like millstones, but they do no grind
ing. They serve simply as a parade of
tbe wealth of the villuge. Their value
lies solely In the difficulty witb which
they are obtalued.
The yellowish granite of which they,
are made is found only in the Island
of Palao, 200 miles away, and when,
the monsoon favors forty or fifty na
tives voyage there In their vcanoes.
After pacifying the king of Palao witB
presents the work ot hewing tbe wala
kn, or money stones, begins, lasting for
months until the monsoon changes,
when tbe tollers start homeward wlthi
their "coin."
The smallest of these stones Is about
a foot in diameter and three inches
thick, with a round bole tbrougb its
center. It will buy food for a family
for a month. Tbe large stones, about
tbree feet In diameter and eight inches
thick, have relatively much greater
value, since It is more difficult to trans
port them In cranky ennoes over such
a long stretch of sea. Indemnities can
be paid witb such a stone or tbe aid
of neutrals purchased in time of war.

Easy to Multiply by It if You Will Re
member This Rule.
Examine any one of tbe statements
of equality In tbe multiplication table)
of nine, up to and Including nine times
ten. Select, for example, 0X703; or
8X218.
Observe that In each case the first
digit In the product Is one less than
the number by which nine is multi
plied, and tbe second digit in tbe prod
uct Is such that when added to the
first digit, tbe sum of tbe two is nine.
You may make practical use of this
peculiarity of nine and its multiples by
applying it In tbe following woy:
If nine Is to bo multiplied by eight,
for example, think at once of seven
(which is one less than eight, tbe mul
tiplier); then think of two, which must
be added to seven to make nine, and
you have seventy two, the product of
nine aud eight.
Or, If nine Is to be multiplied by Ave
think of four, which Is one less than
five; then think, of Ave. which must
be added to four to make nine, and
you have forty-five, tbe product of nine
and Ave.
By using this method tbe nines,

short time, be fairly classed with the
fives nud tens and elevens, which are
said to "remember themselves."

A High Priced Fricassee.
Lord Alvanley. a noted wit and high
liver In England n hundred years or so
ago, insisted on having an apple tart on
his dinner table every duy throughout
the year. On one occasion he paid a
caterer $1,000 for a luncheon put up In
a basket that sulllced a small boating
party going up the Thames. Being one
of a dozen men dining together at a
London club where each was required
to produce his own dish, Alvanley's, as
tho most expensive, won him the ad
vantage of being entertained free of
cost. This benefit wns gained at an
expense of $540, that being the price
of n simple fricassee composed entirely
of tbe "nolx," or small pieces nt each
side of tbo back, faken from thirteen
kinds of birds, among them being 100
snipe, 40 woodcocks and 20 pheasants
In all about 300 birds.

The Legion of Honor, is a French or

originally consisted of a star contain
